A river divides the forest in two.

Depending on where you are, it can run anywhere between so fast the water is churned white or so slow that it hardly seems to be moving at all. It's not wide enough to cross easily, but there are natural stepping stones scattered up and downriver. However, it isn't advised to explore the other side of the river since Carrmin's influence doesn't reach past the other side of the river.

Regardless, the river is a good place to be for a while. The water is clean and clear, with a healthy wildlife; there are plenty of fish and frogs about.

Depending on where you are and the time of day, you may see a twinkling light in the distance on the other side of the river, deep in the forest. Maybe you'll hear twigs snapping, or shadows moving. Maybe you'll wonder if there's someone else out there.

But that's impossible, of course!

Welcome to the River!

The fleet feet wore off and Naomi slowed to a stop as the riverbank came into view. The wind was really starting to pick up here, but it wasn't the wind that caught her interest. It was the bridge.

A makeshift bridge of writing roots connected the two sides of the river, leading deeper into the forest where students rarely traveled. Naomi doubted that Carrmin had made the bridge; it was usually in his interest to keep the students on this side of the river, because that was where his control was. This had to be the work of a different plantwielder, and she could only think of one that wanted to connect the sides of the river.

There wasn't a doubt in her mind; on the other side of that bridge was the road to the cottage. "Windy, isn't it?" she commented as she took a step towards the river. And then promptly was forced to take a step back, as the wind chose that moment to pick up and a strong gust pushed in their direction.

Naomi frowned. The forecast hadn't said it would be this windy, had it?

"Wonder why they'd want to create a path across." Ari mused, her own pace slowing down as she reached behind Naomi.

The wind piqued Ari's interest, and she narrowed her eyes as she looked around. Feeling wary, she slipped a hand back into her pocket and around her channeler. With her free hand, Ari tried to bend a bit of the wind to her control. If what Ari was assuming was right, then--

Her other hand quickly whipped out her channeler, and Ari grabbed Naomi by her collar and dragged her back.

"Oi, you piece of s**t," Ari snarled. "Show yourself already."

Andrew only had one order: keep anyone from crossing the bridge. And he was going to follow Lara's orders to the end.

The Buff stood at the foot of the bridge as the three girls stormed into view, ghosted from sight. Well, wasn't this a surprise. He had been expecting more than just three. Andrew actually suspected that there were more than three, but they had ended up getting split amongst the three. Well, it was easier than taking on all of them at once.

Still, for three people to get past James and Melanie (well, Melanie at any rate), they had to be strong. But they were kids. Andrew could take them.

The pink girl seemed to figure out something was wrong immediately, pulling the girl in the white coat back. A windwielder, I'm guessing, Andrew thought, drawing his wand and taking aim. She realized the wind here wasn't under her control. He didn't quite feel like showing himself, as she demanded, nor did he really take to being called a "piece of s**t". Instead, he fired a sharp warning blast of wind towards the group. If they refused to leave, then he'd take more drastic measures.

Cas slowed to a stop at the riverbank, keen eye still coursing its way through her body. She stared at the root bridge, almost amused at the handiwork. It was way too crude to be crafted by Carrmin and judging by the workmanship, it was made in a hurry, however it seemed sturdy enough to support the three girls when they'd cross. If they were to cross. "I'll hazard a guess our little elf friend was kind enough to lend us a hand?" She smirked, turning towards the other two. But that was cut short, as the wind she hadn't noticed until now blew fiercely.

She crouched to steady herself, expression immediately turning hostile as her eyes narrowed to scan the area, her keen eye still hummed throughout her head, and she could perhaps detect the faintest outline of a particular figur- "Augh!" Cas's concentration was cut short, being buffeted by a sudden sharp blast of wind, she had to shield her face, keen eye dying out.

She returned to her defensive posture, wiping a few loose strands of hair out of the way. The glow in her eyes replaced by a much more, hostile and deadly glint that sent sparks flying. Literally.

Ari clicked her tongue, digging her feet into the ground. She had hoped that their assailant would have gotten annoyed enough at the taunt to show themselves.

There was water. Combined with lightning, it would make a deadly combo. Now if only Cas and Naomi had it within them to work together, then...

Well, they weren't going to have any other option soon enough. The last bout of wind that had shoved them was obviously a warning to them to back off. Too bad they wouldn't.

It was going to be a long, strenuous fight. Ari sincerely hoped the underclassmen hadn't run into anybody too vicious.

"Nao," Ari grit out, her voice low. She had no idea where the Pact member was, so she figured it wasn't a very smart idea to try to communicate out loud.

Casting a mild density on herself for only a moment and internally cursing at the fact she was probably going to provide to be mostly useless, Ari tilted her head towards the water.

Naomi threw up an arm to protect her face. She could hear her jacket getting sliced; nothing that couldn't be fixed with a Mend later. The real problem was who threw that wind. Naomi had no doubt it was a Pact member, definitely a windwielder. This was bad. Depending on how things went, Ari could prove next to useless.

Naomi's gaze shifted to the river for a second, but dismissed it for now. What they needed was a way to see this a*****e. She doubted a Keen Eye would be helpful. It would be so damn simple to work out a strategy if she knew which Pact member they were facing! The Tank was back there with Aerykah. That left the Shield, Leader, Buff, and Scout unaccounted for. Making a proper strategy was impossible until at least that basic fact was in her grasp.

So, the first course of action was to figure out who they were dealing with. Naomi's eyes flickered over the area, trying to see if anything was of use. If only she had End with her; a mistwielder would've been invaluable here. Instead, Naomi was going to have to improvise. Ari couldn't use her wind, but maybe Naomi could.

Naomi plunged her hand into the folds of her coat and closed it around her favorite stone; the blue glittery one. She turned her focus on the river, pulling as much as she could manage from this distance out. This would be so much easier if I'd had the opportunity to transform. Then, using the Pact a*****e's own wind, Naomi directed the water into the buffeting wind and let it get torn into molecule-sized pieces and spread over the clearing. A thin, low-lying cloud. Better known as fog.

A dark smudge quickly became apparent at the other end of the clearing, in front of the root bridge. Got you, you b*****d. Time to see what they were up against. "Cas, now!" Naomi hissed, hoping Cas would properly interpret her instructions to zap the ******** out of ghosting like a coward.

Cas contemplated the situation, eye flickering back and forth, exchanging looks with her fellow companions, it was obvious that they were all thinking the same. no denying that Naomi wasn't often a complete b***h and that she had no intention of being around her, she wasn't above pulling her own weight and doing a bit of cooperation with her if needed, heck they'd already done it once before in the catacombs and Cas had to admit it, they had been pretty ******** bad a**.

She sighed. "Well..if i must." and crouched lower as Naomi created her mist. Making sure the two were well out of the way, Cas clapped, a resounding smack that echoed off the trees, jolts raced their way down her arms, pouring from her jewel. In seconds Cas's fingers were crackling as she packed her hands in close to her body before thrusting outwards. Lightning immediately leapt forth, filling every inch of the mist as it arced from molecule to molecule and eventually their hidden assailant in the middle.

Andrew knew something was up when the mist started forming. Someone was using his wind to force an interlement ploy. But why?

The answer came in a literal bolt of lightning. Most magicks would get fried on the spot, but Andrew was not most magicks. He managed to throw up a turtle just before impact, and the lightning scattered across the surface. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't hold up a ghost spell and shield at the same time, so he was forced to sacrifice stealth for protection.

Well. This group was smarter than he'd anticipated. If he underestimated them he could easily end up ******** himself over. The wind barrier on its own wasn't going to do any good.

And because he was thinking that, the pressure lessened for just a moment.

"I think you might be tired of hearing this," Andrew called across the clearing, "But I can't let you pass. That trick was clever, though, I'll give you that." And it won't work a second time.

Ari couldn't help but roll her eyes a little in amusement at Cas' hesitant agreement, but also found herself a little anxious. She really hoped they wouldn't start arguing in the middle of this whole...ordeal.

Ari thought briefly to the underclassmen, and hoped they were doing okay. She had half a mind to go back if she didn't already know that it would already be useless. Also, somebody had to be the middle(wo)man for Cas and Naomi.

Ari simply stood back as Cas and Naomi collaborated, finding her ire growing at the fact that she would probably provide mostly useless. If only she could just summon a flintlock and shoot the damn guy.

Then suddenly, Ari felt some of the wind respond to her, and she straightened up a little. Responding immediately, Ari took hold of the air that Andrew had let up. She wasn't sure it would be enough, but Ari immediately tried to equalize the air pressure that was currently working against them.

She decided simply not to respond to Andrew, too busy trying to manipulate the precious air he had let go of.

The moment the lightning struck, Naomi made a great heaving motion, gathering all the water from the mist onto her arm. The water that didn't fit gathered on her fingers and dripped towards the ground, behaving like a thick, viscous liquid. She could place a name to the revealed face immediately; Andrew Dickinson, the Buff. Human. They were lucky in getting one of the weaker ones, but that wasn't a reason to drop her guard. At least now with this information she could see what she was getting into.

The heavy wind holding them back suddenly lessened, not quite disappearing but at least now they weren't literally being pushed back. Naomi threw a sideways glance at Ari; it was her doing, definitely. If Ari was pulling support, that meant it was up to her and Cas to finish the job. She scanned the area. Use your surroundings. Make the terrain work to your advantage.

For Naomi, water was always her best advantage, and fortunately for them Andrew was standing right next to the river, plus Naomi had this huge blob of water attached to her arm. If they could make him hold still for just a moment, perhaps they could pull of the maneuver they'd done on Iapyx in the Catacombs.

Naomi communicated this all in shorthand. "Ari on the air. Cas with me. Just like Iapyx."

The girl started running across the clearing, already working out how to hold Andrew down. From the front and the back, and then just envelope him in water and Cas will zap him and this'll all be over. If it goes according to plan. Which it never does. He's not going to just stand there while we charge him, he's going to do something that'll throw a wrench into everything but if we can improvise we'll be fine.

                          And then, another thought.

I think I'm getting better at this leader thing.

The girl was running at him. What an idiot. More importantly, Andrew no longer had complete control over the air. Someone else was interfering. He had been holding up the air barrier to keep them away from him to avoid attacks, but if he couldn't do that he needed to come up with an alternate method.

The heat in Andrew's palm alerted him to another problem; the jade he'd inserted into the base of his wand was overheating and if he didn't get rid of it soon, the maple shaft would splinter. He could risk one more spell, just one, and then he'd have to get rid of it before it blew.

Andrew spared another glance and realized something quickly: the blonde girl had water wrapped around her arm. A waterwielder. And here he was, standing with his back to a river like an idiot. With a waterwielder and (most likely anyway) a sparkwielder the ground wasn't safe anymore. There was only one other option.

The jade's glow flared as Andrew used its power one more time. White, blood-spattered wings materialized in an instant and Andrew was airborne in another instant on his Divinity. He came to a stop thirty feet up, wrenching the jade from its socket and throwing it earthbound. It shattered upon landing, or perhaps exploded was a better term. Andrew was unbothered, fishing a specially-cut citrine from his pouch and setting it into the indent the jade had just left. The jade offered protection, but this boosts magic power. Just what the doctor ordered.

Right, his main objective was to keep them from passing. A razor-sharp blast of air took care of the bridge a few seconds later, severing the roots and destroying the bridge. Sorry, Lara, he thought with a pang of guilt, but he could always apologize later. If there was a later.

Cas broke into a malicious grin, a little disappointed their assailant hadn't fried on the spot but now they could see him and that was what counted. She gave off a tiny salute at his compliment. Briefly examining their attacker she could tell he was human, any identification however was out of her reach, Naomi would most likely know though.

Cas blinked at Naomi's commands, but nodded nonetheless "Not one for repetition but if it works...He's not going to just stand there though, so i hope to god you're confident enough to take him down in. " She ran after the girl, closely following behind in case she needed assistance. "Who is he anyway?"

However, if Naomi answered, she never heard, having to throw herself away as Andrew burst into the sky and sent the crystalline grenade, with just enough time to witness the gory effect of his divinity. Ew. she thought whilst shielding herself from gem fragments with her jacket. Another explosion seemed to follow, rumbling and crashing echoed as the root bridge collapsed and split, shriveling back to the trees they were born from. "Well ********>" she grumbled and took a shot at the airborne destroyer with lightning in an attempt to maybe get him closer to the ground. Cas doubted it.

"Andrew," Naomi managed, putting most of her energy into focusing on what to do next. "Buff. Enchanter. Wind." Andrew launched skyward, and Naomi looked up and very quickly realized that something was coming down.

Naomi shouted as the gem exploded, covering her face and letting her jacket take most of the shrapnel, but she still got a cut or two. Oh well, it wasn't like it hurt. Exploding gems, huh? I'll have to file that for later, she thought, looking up. If he was up there, technically there was nothing stopping them from--

And then the bridge was destroyed. Well, there went their way across. Naomi switched objectives immediately. Just one Pact member is enough. Then she could find Averill and they could all get out of here. Simple.

And then she heard the screaming.

First, Andrew heard the screaming. And then he heard his name.

Melanie.

Suddenly keeping the students from moving forward seemed completely inconsequential. His sister, his sister, that was his sister screaming in pain. Andrew hadn't heard her yell that loudly since the time she accidentally put her entire hand into a sizzling frying pan when she was ten. She hadn't sounded so scared since the time a giant spider had crawled into her room and she inexplicably ended up on top of the bookshelf yelling for Andrew to kill it.

The color slowly drained from Andrew's face. Melanie didn't scream unless she was in danger. Something was wrong. Something was very, very wrong. "Melanie," he murmured, and his wings flapped harder. He needed to make sure she was alright, he needed to make sure his baby sister wasn't in danger. But at the same time, he couldn't abandon his post.

So Andrew fluttered there, paralyzed with indecision. Follow the orders he was given, or secure the safety of the only living relative he had left?
