Chapter One - Introduction

Enchanters are the backbone of the magickal world. They create magical tools, items, and weapons for everyday use. However, they can have all the skill in the world, but it won't mean a thing if they are not aware of the properties of different materials.

Enchanters use only two types of materials: natural or alchemized. Alchemized materials (provided, obviously, by an alchemist) have higher magic concentration and are therefore more valued as magical materials. Synthetic materials, such as plastic and nylon, are absolutely terrible for enchanting are not recommended.

Contrary to popular belief, enchanting is different from charming. While charming can be done by just about any wizard, enchanting can only be done by enchanters who have been specially trained. Charms also have a limited lifespan, and disappear once certain requirements have been fulfilled. Enchanted objects will remain enchanted forever, though enchantments done by less experienced enchanters has been known to decay over time.

This book is to serve as a handy reference guide for the different properties of natural materials, animals, and the effect the lunar cycle can have on your magic. It is not only for enchanters, but mages as well - mages may find this guide useful for channeling through different objects.

Use this guide wisely, and your magickal arts will improve tenfold.

Chapter Two - Three Types of Enchanting

Enchanting is actually a broad term that covers different categories. Different types of enchanting produce different effects, and the method of enchanting relies on the enchanter. The three types are as follows:

Pendulus - The Pendulus method is the method used to produce most magic wands that are sold. A wand created using the Pendulus method focuses the internal magic power of the bearer so it can be projected into the material world. It is a favorite method for beginners because the Pendulus method is very flexible and allows for mistakes. It can be used at any time in the lunar cycle, though it has been noted that objects enchanted with the Pendulus method during the waxing cycle turn out better. The Pendulus method also works with most magic sigils, and some enchanters have found that some sigils work better for them than others.

Pendulus objects are also highly valued by mages. An object that specifically focuses the internal power of the bearer makes it easy to channel their power through. A well-made Pendulus object can even increase the power output, which is one of the reasons many enchanters will perfect their Pendulus method even after being fully trained.

Tappat - The Tappat method, or the Key method, is the method used to produce most magical objects. The Tappat enchanting method endows an object with a specific purpose. For example, a sword that shoots out flames when swung has been enchanted using the Tappat method, because it cannot shoot out anything else other than flames. The Tappat method is called the Key method because it is the most important method for enchanters to learn if they wish to make specific goods.

The Tappat method is less forgiving than the Pendulus method. It can only be used on the night of a full moon, and more specific magic sigils must be used. One huge difference between the Tappat and Pendulus methods is the Pendulus method will greatly vary depending on the effect the enchanter is aiming for. For example, enchanting a sword that shoots fire will use a different planetary sigil than a sword that shoots air, because fire and air are governed by different planets and stars. Although the Tappat method is difficult, it is necessary to master.

Aeternum - The Aeternum method, or eternal, is the method most enchanters spend decades trying to master. It is an extremely difficult method to master, because very specific conditions must be met if it has any hope of working. Aeternum enchantments, however, are very, very worth it. They will never break, unlike Tappat or Pendulus enchantments, which have the possibility of decaying or breaking over time. They greatly increase the bearer's power output, and can be used to perform difficult feats with ease.

One of the reasons the Aeternum method is considered so difficult is because of the specific circumstances under which it is performed. An enchanter can only attempt the Aeternum method on a specific date, else they risk their tools and possibly their life. The Aeturnum method can only be used on the evening of a blue moon, and the enchanting must be completed before sunrise. If the appropriate sigils are not used, then the Aeternum enchantment is likely to blow up in the enchanter's face. If it is successful, however, Aeturnum enchantments are extremely valuable - more valuable than a thousand diamonds.

One popular item that is created using the Aeternum method are mirrorstones, an extremely useful magical item.

Most enchanters only learn the Pendulus and Tappat methods - only the most elite enchanters attempt to learn the Aeternum method.

Chapter Six - The Lunar Cycle

Much magic depends on the cycle of the moon. Enchantments, potions, hexes, charms... many of these rely on Luna's location and the timing of the moon cycle. Moon cycles are roughly 28 days long, and they have two main sub-cycles: waxing and waning.

Energy increases during the waxing moon cycle as the sunlight reflected on the moon's surface increased from right to left. The waxing cycle is a good time for any magic related to "construction". For example, if one is mixing a potion for hair growth, it should be mixed during the waxing cycle since it is "constructing" hair. Particularly good days for magic during the waxing cycle are the waxing crescent on Day 4, the first quarter on Day 7, and the waxing gibbous on Day 10 of the moon cycle.

The full moon, which occurs on Day 14 of the lunar cycle, is the peak of the moon's energy. It is the night that werewolves roam and magic is at its most potent. All spells will be stronger, regardless of a wizard's skill, and magical items left out in the light of a full moon will be recharged so long as they're brought back inside before sunrise. Some sources swear that predictions of the future are also more accurate when done on a full moon. It is the best day to work any type of magic, especially magic concerning a balance, because the full moon occurs dead center of the cycle.

The waning cycle is the period when the moon slowly disappears. It's a good time to work any magic pertaining to "destruction". Relating to the hair growth example before, this would be a good time to instead make a hair loss potion. Hair loss is "deconstructing" hair. Particularly good days for magic during the waning cycle are the waning gibbous on Day 18, the last quarter on day 22, and the waning crescent on day 26.

However! It is warned that the closer to the new moon magic is performed, the likelier it is that something will go wrong. If the full moon is the best night to work magic, with magic at its prime, then the new moon is the worst. Magic, save magic charged by dark powers, is weak during a new moon and any magic attempted during a new moon is bound to go severely awry unless the wizard has complete mastery over their power.

Other magic (or enchantments) can only be performed during a specific full moon as well. As stated earlier, for example, the Aeternum method of enchanting can only be performed during a blue Thunder Moon. A Thunder Moon is a full moon occurring in July, and a blue Thunder Moon is the second blue moon in July. The different full moons are as follows:

January - Wolf Moon
February - Snow Moon
March - Crow Moon
April - Grass Moon
May - Planting Moon
June - Flower Moon
July - Thunder Moon
August - Green Corn Moon
September - Harvest Moon
October - Hunter's Moon
November - Frosty Moon
December - Long Night Moon

A blue moon is the second full moon in any month. This phenomena only occurs every two to three years, though in rare cases there have been two in a single year. The next thirteen blue moons will occur on the following dates:

2015 - July 31
2018 - January 31
2018 - March 31
2020 - October 31
2023 - August 31
2026 - May 31
2028 - December 31
2031 - September 30
2034 - July 31
2037 - January 31
2037 - March 31
2039 - October 31
2042 - August 31

Certain types of magic will also be more powerful under the moon than under the sun. As a general rule of thumb, magic related to water and earth tends to be stronger under the light of the moon, while magic related to fire and air tend to be stronger under the light of the sun.

You should now have a basic grasp on the lunar cycle and its importance in working different types of magic.

Colors can be very telling of an item's nature, and, more importantly, the user's intentions. Some items, like mood rings, rely on color to relay their information. Others are simply color-coded for convenience. Chemists can also immediately tell if something has gone wrong with their mixtures by the color of their potions.

Chapter Ten - Final Words

This is by no means a complete guide. There are countless animals, plants, gemstones, herbs, and trees - more than any one book could possibly list alone. What it is, however, is a good starting point for any beginner chemist, alchemist, or enchanter. The resources in this book, coupled with your own teachings, should be enough to get you started on whatever path you desire.

Good luck.
