How do you deal with people constantly not understanding the vegan/vegetarian and trying to talk it down or just plain hate on it. I've had things come across my tumblr dash that were not only that but saying actual horrible things about vegans as people. Like, "Vegans are really good. I love when I chop them up and eat them." or "Vegans are so ugly. Can I just kill them and make the world a better place?"

I have a lot of trouble with this. Because I would love to not worry that the restaurant I'm going to doesn't have any vegan options, I would love to eat a cheese burger, milkshake, cookie dough ice cream, yummy steak, or a glass of chocolate milk with cow milk. But I can't, if I do I immediately get sick and allergy reactions on top of that.

It's like saying, "Cancer patients are so ugly after chemo, can we just kill them and make the world a better place." I don't believe that btw. It's not their fault that they are sick and getting treatment so how is my veganism my fault as well!

Any tips on how you handle this?

So my first comment is there are going to be haters, especially on the internet. There really isn't much you can do about those, just ignore them and don't let them get to you. Obviously they are just trolls and don't understand that it's your choice to be vegan and their opinions are unnecessary. As for the people in real life, especially if they are friends or family, just explain that if they really cared about you, they should understand and support your lifestyle. Just make sure you aren't shoving veganism down their throats (I'm not saying you are, but that's what annoys a lot of omnivores). Explain that you feel this is what you feel is best for your life, and that it doesn't change you as a person because you don't consume animal products. Personally, I live in the south so not eating meat is pretty much a sin. I've even had a guy never call me back after he found out! You just have to let it roll off your back and not get to you.

for the Restaurants part, a good thing to do is look at their menu ahead of time and figure out how you can customize your order to make it to where you can eat it. And I know this is stereotypical, but if it comes down to it, you could always order a salad and balsamic vinaigrette and request that they don't put on any meat, cheese, or any other animal products. That's usually what I do, and feel free to ask your server what exactly is in each food item, they're paid to feed you lol. Just try to be calm, understanding, and kind when you do it.

to be honest when i hear this stuff, even if it pisses me off, i have learned to just laugh it off and move on... because the fact of the matter is, these people can be rude all they want, but we are just doing the best we can for our bodies, the environment, or the animals. and there is nothing wrong with that on our part. so all their mean-spirited comments do is show how hateful and self-centered they are. and really... who cares what people like THAT have to say?

Sweetie, there will always be haters. Whether it's what you're wearing, your friends, where you come from, your hair color, anything can spark a hater. You just have to keep your chin up and not let it bother you. Haters WANT to see a reaction out of you, that's why they do it. If you let them get under your skin, they they've won. If you need anyone to talk to, don't hesitate to PM me.

haha yeah. well same. i mean it bothers me too but theres really nothing you can say to these sorts of people. their hatred is unreasonable to begin with so they wont listen to reason. all you can do is try to forget about it.

Feels like I always have to deal with defending myself! It makes me so upset! Like.... I'm being a vegetarian for all good causes, figthing my way to become vegan but my family and friends keep questioning me. There is no good things with killing/hurting animals so why keep defending it, and make me the "bad/complicated" person?? sad evil

i totally understand... my family and friends did/do that too at first...
often times, peoples family members nag them about it because they are really just concerned about if being vegetarian/vegan is healthy or not. but in that case there are plenty of online sources to show that you can get all your nutrients without meat, or dairy. and in fact that meat and dairy are not even as good for you as people like to think.
either way, my advice would be stick to doing what you really believe in and feel good doing. because eventually they will have to accept that this is your lifestyle and it is not going to change.

I'm sorry hun. I know being strong can be hard but as long as you believe it and show it is not just a phase or being hip. Talk to me when ever because I know the feeling. I hate it.

I wonder if I'll run into this someday. Why in the world would someone care what you eat? Chances are, they're just trying to get a reaction by criticizing something people feel strongly about. It seems ridiculous to me.

But if people want to make fun of me for my attempt at healthier habits, whatever. Perhaps I'll have the last laugh.

It is insensitive though. Maybe try not to tell people who don't need to know?

This happens to me too, so you are not alone my friend. My family dislikes the fact I don't like meat and I get alot of hate for not liking bacon. sweatdrop

I really do hope they'll get over it soon. My granny thinks I'm nuts. I try to give them facts about it, but then they will just think I'm annoying and that I'm trying to provoke them for eating meat. Errrrr...

YUki_lala

Aye! You're right! It's not just a phase! So so hard to convince them :< Thanks

I think the hate stems from a total misunderstand and misrepresentation. You know the phrase, "one bad apple spoils the whole bunch"? There are some more militant vegan/vegetarians that can be hateful to non-veg's and I think it makes them view us all in a negative light. It's a huge cycle of hatred that can only be stopped if we can all learn to accept one another and coexist. My friends and family have been supportive so far, with only a few jokes about "missing meat" and "not eating enough", but I accept it as jest.

The words some people use are in no means acceptable, but I wonder if we could find a way to smother them in kindness (and maybe vegan cookies!) and see if that changes their minds!

At school i deal with my friends who think i'm crazy for being a vegetarian. but just say they can't stop eating meat. i've been a vegetarian for 1year and 5months. i can't eat food at my school without having to pick meat out of my food(even the salads). They forget i don't eat meat ask me if i want a chicken nugget some times. i always have to remind them. rolleyes
