I will start by saying that these combat styles are not meant to box your character into three very generic categories. On the contrary, I'd much rather be able to make a combat system that integrates all of the many gameplay styles that are offered in The Elder Scrolls games. But for now we will keep it very simple, and use the three classes that they initially let you choose from in the beginning. Think of it as a prototype! Remember: You are free to RP it however you like; go ahead and use spells if you're a warrior, or fight with a sword if you're a mage. These are just guidelines for the dice rolls. **Yes I do plan on eventually incorporating the major/minor skills on the character sheets into the combat system, but with balancing and keeping everything fair it's going to be difficult and take a lot of time.
Warrior
Base HP: 25
Attack: Roll a D6. No modifier.
Block/Counter: After your opponent's attack, roll the same die that they used to attack you. If your roll is at least the same as your opponent's roll, you block their attack and negate all incoming damage. If your roll is greater than their roll, not only do you BLOCK their attack, but you also COUNTER and deal back to them the same damage as their initial roll, minus modifiers. ** MAGES CANNOT BE COUNTERED. ONLY BLOCKED.
Special: Beserk. Add +3 to every attack if you are at or below 10 HP.
Mage
Base HP: 15
Attack: Roll a D6. Always add +2 to roll.
Special: Frost spike. You may only use this ONCE per battle. Freeze your opponent, allowing you to roll twice in one turn. Opponent may only attempt to block the second roll.
Thief
Base HP: 20
Attack: Roll a D6. Rolling a 5 or 6 is a critical hit, adding +3 to damage modifier.
Evade/Counter: Same as Warrior's, except rolling a 5 or 6 as a successful counter still counts as a critical hit and you still add the modifier.
Special: Sneak Attack. Always attacks first against Warriors or Mages. If fighting another Thief, roll a D6 to decide who rolls first.

That's what I was going on about in the first paragraph, since it's really difficult to incorporate everybody's playstyles, but I forgot to add that you're free to RP it however you like.

Right right, but my point was more if mages can't be blocked then what happens if a warrior or thief uses a spell on a warrior. Can that be blocked? Or if a mage or warrior were to say use daggers or sneak attack on something, would they crit ever?

And for now since I'm trying to keep it simple, I'm going to say no, because I want there to be something special that is unique to each class has so that we can keep it balanced. I promise, a more in-depth combat system will be on its way, I just wanted to have something basic up so that we could get started.

Ryokuzen Shadowstealer Yeah I derped there. I meant countered not blocked xD. Fair enough. Will be interesting to see how this goes. Yeah i'd love to make a system that's more broad, i.e. everyone starts out with a base amount of HP and Magicka and can use spells, and make the major/minor skills I have in the character sheets actually affect combat (like an alchemist can make health potions or apply poison, smiths have improved weapons/armor and that affects damage modifiers, etc etc) but I'm afraid that people are going to try to choose skills based on what would do best in combat, rather than something that makes sense with their character, and the last thing I want people to do is focus on PvP rather than the RP and story!

Honestly I want to play the suave rogue who talks his way out of things anyway so fighting wasn't really my concern so much. But yeah I get the feeling people will always go for what makes then the "best".

Yeah in case you hadn't noticed my character's two major skills are Sneak and Lockpicking, making her useful as a utility character for adventures and such, rather than the best combat-wise. The Thieves Guild never did much killing anyways. That's the Dark Brotherhood's job. wink
