The most important aspect to a bookstore is not just selection (no bookstore, no matter how spacious, will have everything) but that comfort feeling that some superstores really lack. You want your customers to not just come in to pick up one book, but want to stay, browse and generally enjoy the environment. GA Fly Girl gave a great description, IMO - - soothing colors on the walls are a good start. Comfy, plushy chairs. A cafe, if you can, or at least the smell of coffee brewing. If not coffee, at least some nice scented candles. If you have a children's section, place it in the back of the store and be sure to have child sized tables and chairs. Pay special attention to your end caps, display tables and front window. Often times, these are what your customers will see first and will determine whether they will step in, browse or go elsewhere.
