The Headmaster's Office is on the fifth floor. It's the end destination of a very... very... tall... spiral... staircase.

You're tired from climbing up those steps.

The office, flanked by two bronze phoenix statues, is indeed worth the climb. The cedar double doors stretch about twelve feet in the air and open into a round room dripping with blue and silver. Several magical objects that you can't even name are strewn about the room. From the entrance you can see a couple mirrors, an antique globe, a large astrolabe, several maps plastered on the walls, and sheer cloth draped in various places. An oaken desk is squashed in between a mirror (your reflection insults you as you walk past) and a large, broken pillar. The desk is completely covered in paper and parchment. Quills, ink jars, and ballpoint pens also litter the work surface. Behind it is a plush chair for the Headmaster to sit and a wooden cushioned chair in front of it for any students that have been sent to the office for whatever reason. A staircase, attached to the side of the wall, curves upward, leading to the Headmaster's private rooms in another chamber.

You'll usually only be sent here for serious offenses - ones where the consequence is usually expulsion. Or perhaps a teacher simply sent you with a message. You should hope that it's the latter and not the former. Beyond that, the doors are always open so anyone may come to see the Headmaster for any reason they please.

Welcome to the Headmaster's Office!

Averill Hammershod

Averill rubbed his calf muscles as he stood at the top landing of the staircase.
"Whew. The headmaster must be pretty fit from doing that everyday!" He commented, looking around for his senior "Right, Naomi?"

He didn't want to be the one to knock. Or the one to break the news.
Even though the headmaster was sufficiently quirky to stop him being outright scary, the old wizard was still the head of the school. Talking to anyone with the power to kick you out of school always came with a belly full of earthworms, wriggling and squiggling around in nervousness.

Naomi stretched. "Ahh, always a nice workout." She trotted up the stairs behind Averill, seemingly unaffected by the ridiculously long climb. "You haven't been here yet, right? The inside of his office is breathtaking. Lots of gold and s**t." Without hesitation, she banged on the door three times with her fist and glanced backward, noting Averill's expression. "You met the guy at the ceremony, Averill, it's not like he's going to look at your untucked shirt and expel you. Besides, we're right on time with message delivery."

After a few tense moment, the double doors slowly swung inward with a THUNK. "Come in," a cheerful voice said. The headmaster could be seen from the doors, working at his desk, filling out what appeared to be paperwork with a ballpoint pen.

On closer inspection, there appeared to be a paperback novel atop the stack of leather books right next to him. Maybe he wasn't filling out paperwork.

"Enter, enter," he said, waving the two Ekats in. "What sort of business do you have today?"

Averill Hammershod

On time? How is this 'on time'? He wondered incredulously. There must be a rulebook on reporting missing students somewhere that only house representatives could read. Or maybe Naomi was making it up.

Averill's eyes widened. There were indeed a lot of doodads and whatsits in the headmasters office! They were mostly magical, he assumed, because he couldn't identify most of them.
"Um, hello sir!" He waved awkwardly, remembering how many questions he had asked at the opening ceremony and hoping the headmaster wasn't still fed up with him for that.
"We're reporting a student missing?" He stated, but placed a question mark on the end, looking up at Naomi to continue. He wasn't sure if she wanted to report the other students who had apparently disappeared in front of her, or if Vivian was the only thing they were reporting.

Naomi dragged Averill into the room by the arm and nodded, respectfully, to the headmaster. "Like he said, sir, we're here to report a missing student. It's been three days, so she's missing according to school policy." She hesitated for a moment, and then she said, "Vivian Summers, a first-year Tomas. She disappeared at the Ekat house event, so naturally I will take partial responsibility and I will be happy to organize any search parties." She didn't bother mentioning Ari disappearing as well; Ari needed another day before she was "missing" anyway. "Oh, and Aerykah Sampson, the Tomas rep, also disappeared at that time, but according to Carrmin she's fine and may be back on campus already."

At the mention of a missing student, Soulstone put down the pen and rose from his desk. He let Naomi finish, and then stepped around his desk until he was a few feet from Averill and Naomi. "I see," he said, after a moment. "The situation seems grave, we haven't had to send out a search party for a few years now. You needn't worry about that, Miss Pritchett, I'll take care of that." He waved a hand, and the papers he had been working on straightened themselves and flew into a paper tray marked "OUT".

"If Carrmin says that Miss Sampson is fine, then I'll believe him. Miss Summers, however, will require a search party. I'll contact Carrmin and the professors about this. Is there anything else, Miss Pritchett and Mister Hammershod? Do you, perhaps, have a question, Mister Hammershod? Do you have any problems with your academic set up, Miss Pritchett?" Evidently the headmaster had not forgotten about Averill.

In the mirror behind Soulstone, Naomi and Averill's reflections began making faces behind the Headmaster's back.

"Um no sir." The half-dwarf boy mumbled, looking at his feet.
It was mostly so that he wouldn't burst out laughing at his mirror-self pulling faces.
"Oh, actually!" His head jerked up and he blinked at the headmaster.
This kid could just not help himself! "Who is on the search parties? Teachers? And what will happen if you dont find her? How long do you keep searching for? Where are you going to look?"

Soulstone shouldn't have expected anything less. He nodded. "As you wish, Mister Hammershod. I will organize the search parties myself, but they will likely consist of teachers and be led by the groundskeeper, Miss Crystin, and Carrmin. Search parties will search the area around the school and the Catacombs, as it is possible Miss Summers found an entrance to the Catacombs that the school does not know of. She also may have been found and picked up by Justus police, in which case we may find her in the police station. If we don't find her within the next two weeks..." Soulstone frowned.

"I'm afraid school policy dictates that we must cease the search ourselves and inform Miss Summers' family of their most unfortunate loss. This hasn't happened in the years that I've been headmaster, but... well, there is a first time for everything. But I am quite confident we will find Miss Summers regardless."

Behind Soulstone, Averill's reflection began twerking. Naomi's reflection mouthed fake words, silently mocking what Soulstone said.

"Thankyousir" Averill said in one breath, and whisked away down the stairs, actually putting his fist in his mouth to stifle the inappropriate laughter which threatened to gurgle up from his throat.
That was an amazing dance move though- he didn't even know his body could do it! It was also a relief to know that there were codes of conduct for this sort of matter, and that the teachers were going to look for Viv. His stomach felt much more at ease now.

Naomi looked straight ahead, ignoring the mirror. "My arrangements are fine, sir. Thank you." Well, with that good deed out of the way, Naomi bowed her head and turned to leave. At least the Headmaster was discreet; she didn't want her unusual arrangements being proclaimed throughout the school. Rumors had a way of getting around, after all. So, she followed Averill down the steps. The many, many steps.

As soon as she was out of earshot, though, Naomi began to laugh. God, that mirror was a riot.

Naturally, Sylvia had dashed off in the exact opposite direction that Naomi had told her the red blur had gone in. She wasn't an idiot. Going the traditional way up to the Headmaster's office was just asking for a confrontation.

She just prayed that Naomi didn't drag the younger students into something bad. She had given suggestions for a reason, but she had an inkling nobody would be listening to them. Such was the life of an oldest sibling.

As she was thinking this, Sylvia barreled towards the window of the Headmaster's private room, throwing the acidic potion (Josephine had taught the chemistry students the recipe ages ago) onto the glass. The red liquid ate away at the edges of the glass, and Sylvia fell in with a loud 'THUMP' of large wings and skinny body.

The potion had been worth the detour to the Ekat dorms, but now Sylvia was swearing up a storm as her divinity-conjured wings slowly disappeared from behind her in a flutter of gold and black feathers. Both potion and sharp glass had managed to get onto her (as she expected it to) and now she was just trying to wipe away the acid on her with the bow on her top. Along with slices along her arms there were now more than a few angry red splotches on her skin. Sylvia was pretty sure some of the solution had gotten into her hair from the burning smell coming from her long ponytail.

Looks like she was gonna have to bleach it again.

"There goes another outfit," Sylvia muttered to herself when she inspected the holes now in her leggings and the ruined state of the bow on her top. Ah, well. This always happened to her clothes.

Making a mental note to sew it back to perfection later, Sylvia straightened up and looked around the room. There was glass at her feet, as she had managed to shatter quite a bit of the window rather than erode it away. The room was...

What the ********, was that a computer on the headmaster's desk?

"Concentrate Sylv," The fourth year murmured to herself. Her legs were trembling from the strain on her leg muscles caused by fleet feet; it had been a while since the spell had caused her such exhaustion. Sylvia hit one of her thighs with a hard fist, diminishing a bit of the trembling as she dashed down the stairs into the Headmaster's office.

"Headmaster, we got trouble and it's comin' to ya doorstep! Err, well, prolly. I'm sure you got some valuable information in here or your room somewhere, I didn't really check. By the way, sorry about the glass."

The Headmaster was at his desk, having just put the mirrorstone back in its case. Carrmin's news was dire, but he was confident that the party wouldn't be interrupted if all the proper entrances were guarded. It was likely nothing, but with the recent rumors and owls from the Council, well, he couldn't exactly take any possible threats lightly, could he?

A loud THUMP caught his attention, but just for a moment. He had a feeling he knew who it was; a student that had made flashy entrances through his window a habit since her second year. First there had been that catapult, then there was the megabounce potion, that time she had scaled the entire school... the list of incidents went on and on. His suspicions were only confirmed as Miss Wood, looking a tad singed, bounced out of his private quarters. Soulstone sighed and put down the most recent edition of the Weekly Parchment.

"Miss Wood," he began, "I mean no disrespect, but would you mind using the stairs every so often? It gets quite expensive having to replace the glass of my window every few weeks."

A grin grew on her face at the headmaster's comment. She had been the biggest troublemaker when she was younger, but Sylvia guessed that all of her tendencies still hadn't left her. Ah well, at least she hadn't been cussing as much as she used to.

"Too many for me to bother, Headmaster," She dismissed with a wave of her hand. Sylvia jerked a little, remembering why she had come.

"Uhh, but that's not what I'm here for. Your teachers disappeared half way for the party. Assumed they got called out causa you, but seeing as I see no one here..." Sylvia motioned around the fairly empty office. The calm atmosphere was a stark difference from the panicking students Sylvia knew were probably back at the Great Hall. "Anyways, something has gone wrong. Some of the students have gotten it in there heads that the Pact have infiltrated the school -- I'd advise you to check on it and prepare yourself."

Sylvia paused for a moment, wondering if she could push her luck. She decided to go with it.
"I mean this with no disrespect myself, Headmaster, but seeing as I am possibly the nosiest student in your school right now, what the ******** is going on?"

The moment the Pact was mentioned, the Headmaster snapped to attention and rose from his desk. He left Miss Wood finish, and then he frowned. "I called out the professors, yes. Carrmin contacted me a short while ago and told me he sensed a strange disturbance in the Catacombs, so I ordered the professors to enter the Catacombs and guard their entrances, find the source of the disturbance if possible." He stared at his desk, the pieces starting to come together and a very nasty picture unfolding. "It seems likely that, if what the students believe is true, the disturbance was the Pact themselves."

He picked up the mirrorstone again and waved a hand over it. The images flashed through the different hallways, until he stopped it. There; five people, second floor. Red uniform jackets. Recognizable to anyone who read the papers. "It's them," he said quietly. "But how on earth did they get past the professors?" He looked over at Sylvia. "Miss Wood, I fear we are facing a grave situation. Go find a way to free the professors. Unfortunately, I do not know much more than you do." He studied her over his glasses. "Are there any other details worth telling me? Anything that could help the situation at hand?"
