The Academy is a gorgeous place.

Stepping into the halls before, between, or after classes always fills you with a warm feeling. The granite floor (recently renovated from those six hundred-year-old cobblestones) and the redwood walls make a nice combination. Large, circular windows let in a lot of natural light along with great views of the campus from any floor. During the evening, the Academy is lit up by a combination of torches and electric lighting.

Getting from floor to floor is easy - just climb the stairs. Just be warned, some of the steps can be temperamental. Some steps might refuse to be stepped on, and others will just squish on their off days. Sometimes the stairs will play tricks on you, leading you up to the wrong hallway when you're running late. On regular days, though, the stairs are just stairs that lead you to where you expect them to.

Don't forget - there are five floors to the Academy of Merlin, with the classrooms all on the bottom four and the Headmaster's Office at the very top. Keep your map handy, and don't get lost!

Welcome to the Hallways!

"...so, um, did any of the kid's letters include a map?" the Tank finally asked as the five searched for the staircase to the third floor. After several moments of silence, the Tank muttered, "I'll take that as no."

"She got us in," the Buff reminded, following the Leader down the hall. By this point they had managed to make a safe distance between themselves and the students, not that the students could really do much to them anyway. "That's more than we could have asked for, and it's more than we could have done for ourselves. Besides, the stairs are probably through the doors at the end of the hallways just like the last one. Or are you lacking common sense?"

"Don't start," snapped the Shield, finishing the barrier on the doorway they had just entered. You could never be too careful, after all. "We're taking a lot of risks here. We can't afford to mess up. If we follow the hallway, we should end up at a staircase. Simple as that."

"Man, why's this place gotta have so many stairs?" the Tank complained, but he followed the group in standard formation, twirling his wand in one hand. They reached the end of the hallway soon enough, and the Tank kicked the door at the end open.

"Wouldja look at that, more ********' stairs. What a surprise."

"Shut up and start climbing," the Scout snapped, halfway up already. "We're here for one reason and one reason only, and it's not to listen to you whine about how many stairs you have to climb." She reached the top and scanned the hall with sharp green eyes, using her magic to sense for any living beings on this floor. She found none. "Clear."

The Leader went up next, followed by the Shield, Tank, and Buff. The third floor was as empty as the last; the Leader assumed the students were at the party. The professors, meanwhile, were locked up down in the Catacombs thanks to their inside helper. By the time they got out, their mission would be finished, or at least the hard part. Besides, in order to help their assistant, they needed the old man's mirrorstone, and there was no easy way of getting it without knocking down the door to his office. "Stay close," he warned. "We've taken as many precautions as possible, but it never hurts to be careful."

The Tank glanced behind him, as if to ensure that nobody was following them. But that was ridiculous of course. "I still say we shoulda at least locked the kids in, if we aren't supposed to hurt 'em," he muttered. "You should never underestimate high schoolers. They're really ********' hyped up on hormones and s**t. Plus they're always the ones that take out the bad guys in the movies."

"We are not the bad guys," the Shield said. "Our intentions are pure, and you know it. The newspapers paint as as the bad guys, that's all." She finished setting up the shield on the door they'd just entered; it didn't let anyone in, but in the event they needed a quick escape, it let people out without trouble. "And this isn't one of your stupid movies, Tank. Kids wouldn't be able to hold a candle to us, not even the fourth years."

The door at the top of the staircase flew open with a bang, and the Headmaster descended first, wand at the ready. He came to the bottom of the stairs and stood there, facing the Blood Pact unit with a leisurely smile. "You must be the intruders," he said pleasantly. "I am sure you know who I am, but I do now know who you are. Sadly, this is irrelevant, as you will be taking part in an experiment of one of my students." He glanced up the stairs. "Miss Wood?"

He kept one arm behind his back, hiding the shield that was materializing on it. A man could never be too careful, especially when dealing with such a volatile organization as the Blood Pact.

Sylvia was second to descend down the stairs, or more exactly, trip down them. The girl's head was first to pop out and she managed to make it out the door before her foot slipped on the edge of the stairs and she went --

                      "Oh shi--"

                      -- Tumbling down.

It was exactly the sort of ridiculous thing that only she could manage to pull while facing off with what most newspapers were calling 'terrorists', and somehow it was enough to get Sylvia to put her usual face back on. Tripping had only increased her nervousness, but it had given her enough time to slip back into the persona she used with everybody else.

The fourth year stood up as casually as possible, dusting her outfit off. She pulled her wand out from where she had shoved it into the side of one of her mary janes, clearing her throat as she stood back up.
"Well, uh, I'd say nice to meet ya but I don't think it's exactly the time for polite courtesies, sooo...."

Sylvia shrugged. At least she knew that the benefit of being underestimated always lied with her and her infamously bad first impressions. In the thirty seconds it took to get to the Blood Pact she had managed to formulate a pretty basic plan, though whether it was a good idea wasn't something that Sylvia could argue.

It was, actually, an absolutely stupid idea. But, hey. As her upperclassmen would have once said -- 'When in doubt, bump the hell out of it.'

Sylvia twirled her wand once between her fingers as she was in the habit of doing and without further ado point it in the direction of the Blood Pact, casting a very wide-ranging 'bump'.

The moment the Headmaster appeared, the Leader froze. Then he drew his wand, ready to cast a spell... until someone else thudded down the stairs. Well, that certainly ruined a dramatic appearance. She seemed to be a student. The Leader frowned. Weren't all the students supposed to be downstairs? Something wasn't right. "Listen, we aren't here to-" he began.

And then she cast Bump, and the entire Pact unit stumbled backwards a couple feet. (Scout fell.) But only because they had been taken by surprise; the Pact wasn't that easy to get rid of. "We aren't here to hurt you," the Leader repeated, glancing at Sylvia. "We're only here to... talk to the Headmaster. Go run along back to your little party."

"Ah, we're taking the old bumping approach?" the Headmaster said gleefully. "Most excellent! Permit me to join in." He spun his wand and cast Bump towards the Blood Pact, a Bump much more powerful than Sylvia would be able to muster, one that pushed the Pact back a good few feet. "I must say, Miss Wood, your methods are quite crude, but they are indeed effective." However, the Headmaster had his doubts that this would work for long; it was a crude tactic, yes, but one that could easily be defended against. He twirled his wand and Bumped them again, but as he expected this did not push them back nearly as far. Oh dear, it looked like their luck was going to run out. He wondered if a bluff or two would work.

The first bump was surprising. The second was annoying, the third downright irritating. Lara finished setting up a barrier before either of them could initiate a fourth. "We don't want to hurt you, kid," she said. "Like the nice man with the scar said, all we want to do is chat with your Headmaster. In private." This was getting out of hand. If one student was around, how many more were there? This was going to get pretty messy if they didn't get things under control.

It was more than a little difficult to stop herself from snorting when the Scout went stumbling down -- this was an achievement in itself. Who got to surprise-bump a controversial black magic using group everyday?

Still, they were quick to assure her they wouldn't hurt her. Sylvia's eyes fell on the Headmaster; was he why they had risked coming into the school? Well, that was a thought for later.

Sylvia tilted her head at the Blood Pact, blinking in confusion as she tilted her head. The fourth year lowered her wand slowly, making sure she looked pointedly smug.
"Personal chat?" Sylvia questioned. "I think it's a little late for that. We've already found out who your spy is."

The Ekat looked up the ceiling thoughtfully, tapping her cheek like she was trying to remember Vivian's name. "Vivian or somethin', aint it? We checked in the mirror stone. The other students are grilling her good."

Sylvia brought up a hand to shield the smile that had crawled up on her face, and the fourth year gave a little snicker. "Honestly, though, I didn't expect ya to fall for our trap so easily. "
