A full moon shone like a beacon in the night sky, lighting the darkness with a gentle glow. The steady murmur of humans and their activities spilled from the main streets onto normally quiet paths, punctuated by the sounds of loud, cheerful music. Colored lights from signs and white light spilling out of windows and doors mingled with the moon light and made the whole city seem to glow. In the midst of it all something white, black, and green moved through the back alleys like a shadow.
Magicdancer watched the revelries from a safe distance. She largely avoided humans out of caution, but it was still interesting to watch them go about their lives. Tonight seemed to be some sort of celebration, if sheer numbers alone were any indication. They all stayed on the main streets though, which made moving unseen easy for her. It also meant excellent opportunities to collect things she could use for spells. Glass bottles would be in abundance, for one thing. There would also be more chances at finding food, though that would involve getting a bit closer to the humans than she was comfortable with. For now she just wandered through the moon-lit paths, taking in sounds and smells while keeping her eyes open.

Victor walked into a city. He had been in nature for so long it was strange being out here with people. And there were so many people today. The full moon was nice and made him feel better even as all the people in the streets made him nervous and uncomfortable. He had never been around so many people in his life and he wasn't sure he was happy about being near so many now. But he needed to get over this and meet new people. It was a goal of his and a challenge so now he had to do it. The moonlight helped his eyes adjust to the glaring lights the humans had. It was so lively and energetic. what was going on here? Was it a holiday or some sort of gathering?
He spotted a dark shadow in one of the alley ways. When he focused on it he realized it was a very pretty girl with white markings and green hair. Wow that was a pretty girl and she had the right idea. He moved to get on the side streets but stole some food on his way. He was hungry and the humans weren't paying attention to the food he took. Once he was in the side streets he felt better less exposed. Taking a deep slow cleansing breath calmed his nerves.

Magicdancer saw the other Fume. It would have been difficult not to. She was keeping an eye on the street, just in case any humans decided to traverse the alleys, and caught glimpses of bright crimson and gold fur weaving around the crowds. She didn't pay much attention beyond that though. Plenty of Fumes lived in cities, given the same tolerance humans gave to the other animals that lurked about. Others, like herself or her father, often visited cities just for a change of pace or to see what opportunities could be had. It would have been more surprising not to see others, even if Fumes were still uncommon in the world.
She had dismissed the other from her mind and was carefully shifting through some things that had just been tossed out. Another useful purpose of these back ways, away from the beaten paths and therefore used for discards. It did mean you had to watch the doors, but those were set in the side alleys that led into the back alley, so it was rarely a problem. She kept her ears open as she looked for useful things, in case the humans came out to throw more away. That was how she heard the soft footfalls approaching, almost buried in the noise coming from the main streets. She didn't look up from her task; she sensed no hostility coming from the other, and was at a delicate point towards the bottom of the can where if she didn't hold things correctly her efforts could be buried.

Victor had seen that green haired girl notice him but didn't really pay much attention to it. He had been so much more focussed on getting the food. He was now very happy he had the food. It smelled so good and made his mouth water. Food was very good and he wanted to devour it. But he wasn't somewhere safe enough to do that yet. It smelled too good he had no idea how humans made food that tasted as good as this smelled. He heard the sound of someone digging through the trash. He had seen humans do that and didn't understand why they did that. He continued to walk closer being very cautious. But he was on a deserted street or so he thought. He was shocked when he saw the green and black haired girl digging in the trash.
What was she looking for? Or was she just digging for food? If she was then he could offer her some of the food he had stolen. It looked good and there was more than enough for two. He watched her not wanting to disturb her. It seemed like she was in a precarious position. If she moved too much it looked like she would drop things and that would be bad. Especially if she had been working really hard to work on getting the things out of the trash.

Magicdancer's pale eyes shone as they lit upon a potential prize. It was almost completely at the bottom of the bin. Very carefully she delved deeper. As soon as her paw hit the cool surface she wrapped the limp around it and carefully lifted. As it came up bits of the discards fell back into the pile she had made, but it didn't matter anymore. This was the only gem to be found in this container.
As her paw cleared the can her prize caught the dim light of the moon and shone. Magicdancer looked down on the perfect glass bottle. It was a deep blue and smelled like that gross drink humans liked, but she could easily clean it out. Better, it was totally intact. A fortuitous find! She made a sound of pleasure and looked around, wondering if there was a spot she could hide it for now. There was more to be seen, and if she carried the bottle with her she risked breaking it. That was when a new scent hit her nose, much fresher than the smell of what she had been digging through.
Her head turned slowly. The crimson fur was easily recognizable. She stood there and watched the male, wondering if she was intruding on his turf or something, though she smelled no other Fume as she walked the alleys.

Victor watched her as she dug through the trash. What a curious thing to searching through. Why would someone search through that? Did she lose something? He tilted his head as he watched and smiled she had really pretty markings on her. He watched how carefully she reached to the bottom of the trash can to get whatever that thing was that she wanted. He watched her as she pulled something out and saw what it was. It was a very pretty bottle. What a nice thing to pull out of a trash can. Now why would someone ever through something like that away? Who was so idiotic to throw something so pretty and special away. It shone with such a pretty light.
He watched the girl and her reaction to the bottle. Seemed that was what she had been looking for. It was a pretty deep blue color he was curious as to what it had held and what it would hold. He smiled as he heard the sound she made sounded like she was happy with her find. He held still as she turned to look at him and smiled at her. "Hello there. That bottle is a very pretty find. May I ask what you are going to put in it?" He held out the food he had. "Would you like some? In my haste I think I grabbed more than I can eat I wouldn't want this yummy food to go to waste."

Magicdancer didn't answer immediately. Instead she spent a moment examining the male. He wasn't one she'd ever seen before, though she came into the city rarely enough that she didn't know most of the Fumes who lived around here. She couldn't tell just looking at him if he was a long-time resident or just passing through, like herself. Perhaps she could smell it on him but she doubted it, not with the miasma of smells produced by the humans and their celebration.
On closer inspection she noticed patterns in the male's coat, something she hadn't really seen at a distance and just assumed it was a play of lights. In the dim lighting the color and patterns made Magicdancer think of smoke. It was a very interesting effect.
"Bottles are excellent containers for spells," she said, speaking at last. "I come into the city to find them. There are interesting things here that humans don't seem to notice, so they never miss them when I take them." She turned her eyes to the food the male was offering her. While she wasn't averse to eating human food when she came across it, she never actually took food from them before. She debated whether she would be averse to it now. In the end it was the thought that the leftovers might go to waste that decided her. Somewhere a trickster must be laughing at the human too careless to watch over his wares.
"I would not mind if you don't think you can eat it all. It saddens the heart to see waste. I thank you for your offer."

Victor waited and watched her as she didn't speak. He hoped he hadn't scared her off or made her nervous. He stood there looking as non threatening as he could this was the first fume he had really ever tried to talk to. He wondered how often she came her and if she lived here? He had seen some that lived here all the time and some of them looked very plump and others looked very thin. He let his tail swish and the markings would catch in the light and look even more like smoke. He was still a bit nervous since he had never been in a city before. And it was a bit hard to figure out what this place was all about and like.
When she inspected him he grinned and stood still for her to get a good look at his markings. He like them a lot. As he inspected her markings more he realized just how pretty they were. Such interesting markings were they from her father or her mother? "Spells? Do you make those a lot?" That was very interesting and curious. He wanted to learn about that. "Would you like some help looking for more bottles? They are really pretty and it would be easier with two people looking rather than just one." He smiled as she thought about the food. "I promise the person I took it from didn't need it or want it. If I didn't take it then the food would have just gone to waste and that would be a shame."
He grinned and nodded his head. "I can't eat it all. You are very welcome I wouldn't want any of it to go to waste either."

Magicdancer's pale eyes were unreadable as the male spoke. It was a bit amusing and showed that he wasn't from around this area, where spells such as she did were fairly common.
She moved closer, just a little. She didn't want to seem entirely rude and make the male come up to her, but there was the chance the male wasn't as friendly as he seemed and this was all a lure for a darker purpose. Not that it was likely, but it was always possible. She certainly wasn't going to take the food from him. He could had her whatever he deemed enough. He'd worked for the food after all, even if it was in a less than honest manner.
"I make spells often enough, sometimes on request. It is simple enough, though not many are comfortable making a spell on their own." She grinned, though it was more spooky than reassuring. "Of course an incorrectly made spell can have horrible consequences, so perhaps those people are wise."

Victor looked into her eyes but couldn't tell what she was thinking. It made him very curious to know what she was thinking. He also wanted to know about her spells he had never met anyone who made spells and things like that. He watched as she moved closer and offered her a friendly smile. He meant her no harm and hoped she could tell that. But she still didn't take the food from him. He frowned and tilted his head. Did she think he intended to harm her? What kinds of people did she know if she thought that? He walked over to her slowly so she didn't freak out or think he was going to hurt her.
He held out half of the food to her. "Here lets split it." He looked at the food and wondered what it tasted like. He smiled at her to show he was friendly and held out the food to her. His eyes widened in awe as he listened to what she said. That was amazing that she could do things like that. Her spooky grin was actually rather cute to him and he grinned back at her. "That's very impressive that you can do all that. Is it hard to do? I assume you are good at it if people ask you to make spells for them. Why would they ask if you weren't good? Do you enjoy making spells?" He shivered as he listened to her talk about how it could have consequences. Consequences were never good.

Magicdancer took the offered food, and began to eat a piece while she thought of her response. This male was as full of questions as a swamp of mosquitoes. She'd never been that way herself. As a kit she learned early on that her father would usually not answer questions, and preferred to show her things rather than explain. After a time it was only habit for her to observe to learn her answers. She was not as reticent as her father, but she picked up a few of his habits.
"I wouldn't know the answer to all your questions," she said with a shrug as she swallowed her mouthful of food. "Difficultly depends on a person and their attitude towards a task. People have many motives for why they might want to purchase a badly-made spell. I'm afraid I have no simple answers for you."
She smiled slightly to show she was not trying to blow him off, that what she had given him was as honest an answer as she was capable. "I would guess you are newly come to this particular region. Even those around here who do not practice or show interest in voodoo or hoodoo know of it, if only to steer clear."
