The moment you opened this thread, your power over your character faded.

Yes, dear player, I am speaking directly to you. You who is playing this game. You who is reading these words in your head, you who is probably feeling quite confused right now.

It's simple, you see. The moment you open this thread, you find it impossible to post as your character. Why? Because this thread is not for posting in. This is a secret window for you to watch events unfold that you would otherwise not.

But let's stop breaking the fourth wall, shall we? You're here for the description of the Cottage, so let's begin.

Deep, deep, deep in the forest, so deep most have forgotten it exist, lies a cottage. The cottage looks simple enough; it's a small rectangular building with a couple windows and a door. The roof used to be red, but now it's a dark, murky color now that nature is taking over. It seems to only be able to comfortably fit maybe three or four people, and the entire thing is overgrown with vegetation. For all the world, it seems like a perfectly ordinary cottage, albeit an apparently abandoned one.

However, approaching the cottage is difficult for the rest of the world. It's covered by so many enchantments, seals, and barriers that one may grow suspicious of what rests here. That is, if any of you players could lurk in this thread in the first place. Your characters would certainly be confused of what secrets lie here. Carrmin certainly doesn't know; Carrmin doesn't even realize that the Cottage exists. It's far beyond his realm of the forest.

So who does reside here? What is the secret behind this ordinary-looking cottage that is covered with enchantments and seals?

Let's find out, shall we?

[OOC: In case it wasn't clear enough - this thread is not for posting in by players.]

Lᴇᴀᴅᴇʀ

He burst into the clearing, coughing. "I can't believe we're alive," the Leader muttered, wiping blood-matted hair from his eyes. "Well... most of us anyway." He glanced back to see his unit stumble into the clearing behind him. They had all suffered in the attack, but the Shield had suffered the most. "Let's bust out the first-aid kit and get ourselves cleaned up before we come up with our next move."

"What next move?" the Shield spat, leaning on a tree and breathing heavily. She reached up and touched her eyepatch. "We've lost the one unit member key to the mission. We've been discovered. We can't go back without getting caught or getting shamed out of the Pact. What next move do we have?" She punched the tree in frustration. The situation was just too hopeless to even consider moving forward.

"Shield, you need to calm down," the Buff said, resting a hand on her shoulder. "I know what you're going through. Scout and I both do. But you can't shut down. Your unit needs you. Now more than ever, really." He looked around and shivered. "We've never been in such a dire situation. So close to enemy territory, probably can't communicate base, and our mission's over before it's begun."

"Lighten up, will ya?" the Tank complained, Peter's frail body hanging over his shoulder. "Quit it with your doom and gloom, Buffy Boy, or our morale's gonna sink lower than the Titanic." He offered a grin. "'Sides, nobody ever said this was going to be easy. Losing Petey? A bump in the road, sure. Maybe a pothole. Or a cliff. But we're just gonna have to keep going without him. Maybe one of us can do his job." He pointed at Scout. "You're seventeen or so, right? You could totally pass as a student."

"I'm nineteen, you blond Neanderthal," Scout panted. "I could pass as a senior, maybe. But I don't have the same skillset that Peter did. I wouldn't be able to pull it off without being caught." She held out a hand, and a small orb of light flickered into existence. The vague shape of the cottage she'd scouted out earlier was a little ways away. "Anyway, we should take shelter and work out our next move. We haven't failed a mission in three years, and we're sure as hell not going to start now." She offered Shield a smile. "Right?"

Shield swallowed the lump in her throat and nodded. "...Yeah. Right." She looked up. "I will take Peter's body and bury him in the proper fashion. Then I will return and tend to everyone's wounds. I suggest we sleep tonight and figure out what the hell to do tomorrow. If our intelligence was right, there's a charm around the school that'll block our mirrorstone's signal, but it sure as hell won't hurt to try. We need to contact base and get them to send us another Infiltrator, or this mission may be more complicated than planned." She looked at the Tank expectantly.

"That's the Shield we all know and love," the Tank chuckled, handing over Peter's body. "Go bury him the way he wanted to be buried, princess. Take your time." He glanced up at the Leader. "Boss, we oughta take stock of what we do and don't have. There's a town nearby, so rations won't be a problem, but it'd be safer to take what we need, when we need it."

The Leader nodded thoughtfully, glancing in the general direction of Justus. "Mm. I don't remember bringing a change of clothes. Hopefully there'll be a thrift shop in the town that we can get stuff from on the cheap. I'd rather not buy things with that fake cash spell, but if worst comes to worst..."

The Shield took Peter; he was surprisingly light. "We'll do what we have to in order to stay undetected," she said firmly. "This is the most important mission we've ever been given. We can't afford to screw it up." She jerked her head towards the cottage. "Be in there when I get back and I'll treat everyone's wounds." With that, she turned and stepped into the dark woods.

Lᴇᴀᴅᴇʀ

The Leader watched Shield leave, and then sighed. "She's right, as usual. Even in tragedy, she manages to keep a level head." He cleared his throat, catching the remaining members' attention. "We'll do as she says. Let's make the cottage livable and stay the night. We'll decide what to do after a good night's rest." After noises of confirmation from all the members, the four slipped into the cottage and vanished from sight.

One day, many weeks later, Melanie kicked the door open with a loud bang. "Look at what I found, running around the woods at night like an idiot," she said, dragging in a figure by the ankle. The other members crowded around the figure, looking down at an unconscious teen. "I ran smack into her and I had to knock her out," Melanie explained. "I didn't know what to do with her, so I brought her back here." She looked to the Leader. "What should we do?"

"You couldn't have just wiped her memory, Scout?" The Leader muttered, kneeling and brushing a strand of hair out of the girl's face. "She looks like a student, but... well, we have a few options." He stood. "Option one: We can wipe her memory and leave her somewhere else. Option two: We can kill her and hide the body, so the school will just label her a missing person forever. Option three..." His thin lips curved upward. "We can use an Academy student to our advantage. Our mission may not be so hopeless after all."

"Are you kidding me, Leader?" the Shield demanded, straightening and stepping protectively over the girl. "The Pact may be many things, but we aren't murders. We aren't kidnappers. We're trying to make a change, and damn it, this isn't how to do it!" She folded her arms. "We either wipe her memory, or she joins us. But I will not stand for killing her."
