Actually, looking for a devotional book. Anybody have any ideas?

Here's the story. Meadow (my wife) and I are wanting to do devotionals together. So far, so good. But most of what we've got along those lines is so ... bland that the very thought of reading them is discouraging. (Daily Bread? I need daily meat!) And since we're doing things together, I'm thinkin' there must be some nice couples-oriented books out there somewhere.

Actually, the more I think on it, the more I'm thinkin' a Bible study would be better. Just because we can read the average devotional in fifteen seconds -- twenty if we actually read the recommended verses as well. Bible studies tend to run a wee bit longer. But that's just my personal taste.

At any rate, I'm thinkin' ... this group is adults, right? Surely I can't be the only married person on here. So I'm hoping some of you might have a few suggestions of titles to look for, or things to avoid, or what have you. Any ideas or advice would be appreciated.

Hello my friend and brother in Christ Jesus.
Have you both tried reading as a couple - John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress.' ?
It is a good read and a great Bible study book.
There is also: 'Your Greatest Turning Point - discovering your new life in Christ.' by Dr. David Jeremiah.

Also,:'Know Your Bible - All 66 Books Explained and Applied' by Barbour Publishing.

Also,:'The Ultimate Shield' (connecting by prayer those seperated by war.)
by Dr. J.L. Fryar.

Or; 'Thanking God for You' (25 devotions for a Servant's Heart.) by Gail Marsh

Or; 'Your Promise of Protection - The power of the 91st Psalm' by Gloria Copeland

Or; 'Power For Living' by Jamie Buckingham..

Or; 'Protecting Your Family In dangerous Times' by Kellie Copeland Kutz.

All of these can be found at your favorite Christian book store.

God bless you both!

I doubt I could get her to read Pilgrim's Progress, just based on the archaic language alone. Don't get me wrong, I love her, and I'm not calling her "stupid" or anything, but ... well, she enjoys historical fiction far more than historical reality, and is kind of hazy on the difference. *Shrug.* Me, I can handle it.

Most of these, I've never heard of, but ... wait. Gloria Copeland? I just had someone in another guild advising that she and her husband be ignored rather than read. And I'm assuming Kellie Copeland Kutz is a married daughter. Just for sake of fair discussion, what's your reason for liking the Copelands? I ask not to stir up controversy, but to understand.

Hi, do you and Meadow have any children?
I just ask because I had a little look at the christian bookstore for you, and there's a few things out there but some of the ones that seemed good had a lot of advice for raising children aswell so if you two don't have children, perhaps some of the titles that I saw aren't appropriate for you and Meadow.

I appreciate you looking; our local store is nice, but ... small.

No, no kids ... and despite her jokes, I really don't think four animals qualify as "children". (She asked the lady doing our taxes if we could count them as dependents. rolleyes )

Having looked, I suspect you've seen the source of my problem. There's plenty about how to be a godly parent, a little bit about how to be a godly spouse ... precious little about how to be a godly couple.

This isn't so much a book... but from a quick glance.. it looks like an okay resource...

http://www.focusonthefamily.com/marriage.aspx

The rest of the website seems to be parenting stuff though.

Our local store is small too but as a single lady you notice when most of the people in your congregation are married, about half with children half without so I thought they might cater towards it... but apparently not so much (yes I do see the problem)

Ha ha ha. I am currently the aunty of a nearly 1 year old and no, pets do not prepare you for babies at all no matter how much you loved that pet, my baby sitting experience has taught me that babies are totally different. And ha ha ha can you imagine the tax dodge?

Actually, we could deduct pets, if we were raising them as "service animals". neutral

Hmm ... I've never been a big fan of Dobson, but at this point, I'm willing to try anything ... if I can get the page to load stressed Thanks.

And we're aunt and uncle to around a dozen or so kids, ranging from a few months to 20+ years. I've not been impressed with the overall experience, but that's just me.

Oh thats kinda bad...

Sorry about the page not loading, did it eventually load and give you something useful.

Ages ago when this post was made I asked a few friends about it on facebook, none of the responses were particularly useful.. mostly a case if you find one let me know.. but one person said this

Hey Jess sorry for the late reply. Not sure of any devotionals that are specifically couples related.. Married for god by Christopher ash and the meaning if marriage by Tim Keller are both good reads though!

So you know hopefully thats something I dunno who those authors are though.

but on to 'looking 4 a good book?'

or a book by ROBERT J. MORGAN CALLED 'THE RED SEA RULES'
[The same God who led You in will lead you out]
[10 God given strategies for difficult times.]

Also,

'PRAYING THE PRAYERS OF THE BIBLE' BY JAMES BANKS

I've found the same problem with most devotionals. I still get some of the old christian standbys in my e-mail, but I have one account where I receive readings and such from every denomination (Yah related). This mixes things up for me, and I just ignore the ones that have too much doctrine in them. The other thing is that I subscribe to different lessons from many websites. I get videos and newsletters, and sometimes live feed and video conference (when I'm stopped long enough to indulge). When I can, depending on where I'm located, I get invited to different homes for a home-worship setting. The interaction is astounding, especially when we midrash. Something to think about...
I pray that you and your wife find something you can use. smile
