Olympia's only Bookkeeper's, Chancer's holds a monopoly on all the gambling action within the city. Their motto is literally: "If you shake on it, you pay for it!" Meaning any bet or deal that is shaken on within the limits of Chancer's is on with no take backs. This rule became so popular that it actually became part of Judge Law and scribes go around the second floor in order to take down every exchange made during a match.
Zoid Landing's branch of Chancer's takes advantage of the beautiful outdoors and is modeled after a log cabin. It even comes complete with a porch and a second floor balcony. The second floor is purely recreational, a large open plan space to watch the Matches in, but another thing to watch is this branch's Steve--she is stunningly beautiful.
Judges assigned to the World's Edge say it's possibly the easiest job in the world.

The previous manager for this branch had passed after a difficult battle with some disease Royland Chancer couldn't recall, so his purpose for coming to the remote gambling house was to train the new manager. Chancer was a man of much capability, but explaining a job was apparently not one of them, especially for a job that could be as complicated as Managing Bet-taker. Things can come up when one works as a manager, and the monopolist was determined that this new manager would be prepared come the start of the Grand Prix. Chancer's new manager here at The World's Edge was going to be a young man Chancer himself had dubbed "Steve." It was nothing out of the ordinary for him to call a manager Steve despite the probability it was not his or her name.
"Basically, just make sure you take the amount of money they have on their betting slip and give back the amount that their betting slips say they have won based on the odds on the betting slip. Now, does that make sense?" "I think, but could you explain it a couple more times." He patted Chancer on the back and laughed awkwardly.
Chancer stopped walking, which was enough to make the other man stop. The fake smile Chancer had been putting on for this new manager was gone instantaneously and was replaced by a scowl. He was beginning to regret the decision to promote this man to the higher position. So far his redeeming qualities were quite... Non-existent. The man even had the audacity to touch him and acted as if his promotion was expected and owed to him. The combination of those two things were the final strike. This guy was about to be out of a job. All he could think about the young man was, Foolish, foolish, foolish. You have chose poorly, Chancer. This guy is beyond helping. Chancer's patience was worn far too thin for any further explanations. He had explained it five times now and in much more detail the first four times. He had no choice but to fire this guy before his first hour on the job was up. He slapped his gloved hand on the counter, then reached up to the man's shirt to take the nametag. "I'm not explaining it again. You're fired. Get out." As the "Steve" left, Chancer pointed to the nearest employee. "You, young lady. Did you hear my explanations? Did you understand them?" "Mr. Chancer, I understood them the first time. Jim was never the best assistant manager." "Steve, you're hired. Now, I need to go rebuild my Zoid Team. This took much longer than I had planned." With a gloved handshake, Chancer handed Steve her new name tag before mumbling, "Probably lost out on some good pilots because of that guy..."
Anywhere Chancer went, it was known he was there, and it was even more well known he was looking for a completely new team. Pilots were bound to come to him eventually. It was just a matter of time... And waiting.

When he was younger, he made quite a bit of money for his aunt and himself taking bets on Zoid fights. After all, Zoid combat was the number one entertainment in Olympia, so of course there was legalized gambling on i. It would be too tough to prevent otherwise. That said, Brener hadn't quite shown his face at any of Chancer's establishments. He had been got by Royland in one of his hangars studying his private Zoids. Though Chancer hadn't gone to the cops about it, he had firmly told Brener never to sneak into *his* hangars again. Brener had paid attention, and had even avoided Royland's gambling establishments.
So what had change? Circumstance, as Brener had severed his previous working relationship he needed to find a quiet source of income to help house his Zoid in a hangar while he looked for a team. Though Brener had the mechanic chops to make it as an assistant in a shop, it would be much easier to gamble. After all it wasn't gambling if you knew how to pick out winners. Sure Brener might not win *every* time, but often enough that he was making money, and at a decent rate.
Brener had come to this particular gambling house since it was remote and less likely to cause a stir if Royland had banned Brener. Those thoughts dissipated as he saw the man himself summarily firing Jim, the resident moron middle-managament. He ducked behind the corner as he saw Royland turn to address his new "Steve" judging by the smile on her face. As she passed by the corner Brener stood he called out to her.
"Hello Jessica, seems the odds have been kind."
The woman whirled around at the sound of his voice, her eyes narrowing as she saw Brener.Brener? In a gambling house? You usually hit me up at the pubs with your bets. Don't you know that Chancer is here!""And made you the new Steve. Pure coincidence actually, I'm here to make some new bets so I can shelter Murdock. Any chance you could... let me slide in unannounced? My bad luck doesn't need Chancer's special touch."
Brener was already edging for the door, it was too risky with Royland here. He wasn't sure how the man would react and Brener had had his fill of fights for the day. ▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃ ✘✘ Zoid: König Wolf RZ-053: "Murdock" || Systems: Optimal || Theme: Here I Stand
Chancer had removed his right glove with his teeth by the middle finger and had began inspecting the cuticles of his fingers. They were immaculate, as expected, so he removed the left glove in the same manner to inspect those cuticles, which were equally as immaculate. He tucked the gloves away before walking away from the counter, because he did not want to be caught with them if someone were to begin offering deals. He liked having an excuse at the ready for why he refuses to shake someone's hand. Chancer began moving as if he was ready to leave the World's Edge for a higher class location, so he was not far behind his new Steve as she passed the corner. He caught the last whispered comment as he entered earshot, which was quite close. He looked around the corner and saw who it was, and instantly, the monopolist's face turned into a smile. Veric Brener had in fact broken into his hangars during the boys teenage years to get familiar with the controls of Zoids. Chancer was an understanding man, so he forgave the boy, but warned him to not do it again. Chancer had not forgotten the occurrence, because Brener was the only person to ever have the audacity to break into his hangar. Brener's misfortune of running into Chancer was entirely by chance (-.-). He wasn't originally scheduled to make a stop at the World's Edge again this week, but Jim's poor performance forced him to come and reassess the situation.
"Everyone's luck needs my special touch, Mr. Brener." Chancer's voice projected as intended. He wanted everyone knowing what he was saying, whether it was complimenting or insulting, at almost all times.
Brener's worries about being banned were unfounded. Chancer only banned people he disliked, and Brener did not repeat his offense, so there was no reason for Chancer to dislike him. As long as you were betting with Chancer's Bookkeepers, Chancer did not care about your past. The man in a completely black suit approaching the pair from behind Chancer might, however. It was obvious he was a security guard for the branch. "Sir, this man is known to have criminal associates. Would you like us to remove him?" Chancer's eyes remained locked onto Brener as if he were trying to keep him from sneaking out the door.
"Dave, that's rude. I have criminal associates. This man here is a happy acquaintance. He looks ecstatic to be here. Go get him a drink of his choice from the bar as an apology for your rudeness. Get me my daytime usual." Dave was yet another name that was reserved in Chancer's establishments for the head of security, but that was because their names were Dave. That or they never bothered to correct Chancer, because they knew it wouldn't change anything. Chancer motioned Brener to follow him deeper into the building as he began walking. The man walked with purpose knowing exactly where he was going to sit. He approached a table that was occupied by two people dressed in regular clothing. Both got up instinctively, because they were undercover security employees in strategically chosen seats to reserve Chancer's preferred table in case he randomly appeared, like he did today. The table had a perfect view of the first floor of the World's Edge from its corner. The table was bar height, so Chancer slipped into the chair and crossed his legs. It was implied for Brener to sit for conversation or be rude and remain standing. Once he was sat, Chancer motioned to his gambling house, which was quite empty compared to the Grand Prix matches.
"What brings you to the World's Edge, Veric?" Chancer's voice had hushed itself. It was the natural level of his voice when he was talking privately with someone. He didn't want information that didn't need to be spread to be exposed to the opportunity.

The sneer on Royland's head of security was telling. To his credit, Brener did not show any panic on his face when Chancer had surprised him nor did he display any nervousness now as he followed Chancer deeper into the lion's den. Chancer moved with a purpose, reaching a table whose occupants practically leapt out of their seats. Brener sat after Chancer did, his host having implied that it was ok to do so. Still Brener kept an eye out, especially for Dave, who happened to show up with Brener's drink just as Chancer asked what brought him there.
Brener took a sip of his drink, letting the alcohol slosh through his mouth. Letting the taste charge him before answering,"Money, I can pick a winner in Zoid fights. Not to mention play a mean hand of cards. Turns out... I need money for necessities. Lodging and what not. Gambling's about the only way I have to make money these days."
He took another drink as he contemplated just how much he should mention. As far as he knew, Chancer ran legitimate businesses if a little on the sketchy side. Brener's association with Shade, the kingpin of illegal Zoid fights and its proceeds, made a lot of teams leery to hire him. Sadly, he had had no choice. When he first escaped the blaze that had destroyed his aunt's shop, Brener had still had people who were angry. People, who ultimately had answered to Shade. His wins in the illegal tournaments he had competed in hadn't helped; and Shade... Shade had made him a deal: pilot for him, and he'd make the enemies disappear.
Shade had kept his word, but Brener had gone a step further. For two years he took the supposed truce to make sure each and every one of those enemies were either handled, indisposed or placated. With that pressure lifted he could go and actually become a respectable pilot. Except now he had Shade's mark all over him. Despite the several and very public displays he had made to demonstrate that he no longer worked for Shade, in any capacity. The man was scum, and Brener had only joined up to survive. The only thing he had done since he had been brought into this damn world.
Chancer though... Chancer was different from most folks. He had made himself, created his own empire. He was likely the most viable candidate for a path to legitimacy, or as close as Brener was going to get at the moment. This time however, Brener would actually have a real choice, and hopefully: a voice, in his future.
He took another sip before fixing Chancer a steady look."You probably know, Shade's pet dog is off his leash. 'Cept this dog is not looking to go back. So I hope you'll forgive my presence as I try to make ends meet. I'll even compensate you for the... hands-on practice I acquired at your inconvenience. Chancer already knew the answer to his question, because there could be no other reason to come to this particular branch of Chancer's Bookkeepers. Brener's reason made no sense, though. The season had not yet started, so there was no way for him to actually bet on anything like that at this branch. There were a few table of pokers, but the World's Edge did not have the number of patron to maintain all of those tables. In fact, the World's Edge acted more as a bar in the off season than anything else. Chancer still expected profits from the branch, of course. The failed Steve could not even get people in the door to buy alcohol, which with as many alcoholics living in Olympia was a true sign of failure. Dave brought Chancer some sort of golden-colored, non-alcoholic drink. It only existed at his branches' bars because he was the only one that liked it.
Chancer pushed up his glasses before saying anything. "You came to the wrong place if you want to gamble. You know we don't take bets like that in the off-season."
This Shade character Brener brought up was one Chancer heard a lot about, but never had met. Everything he had heard was conflicting. All Chancer knew was everything he had heard was illegal, which did not sit well with him, because it meant he could not take bets on any of it. It would be too risky to do such a thing. Chancer avoided risk despite his gambling business. He only did things when he knew what would happen, or when there would be no risk. One thing Chancer did not understand was the comments about dogs. Chancer's smile slowly faded at the comment about the past, which was something Chancer rarely cared to discuss.
"Why did you lose his dog? I would be pretty mad, too." He chuckled lightly. "All kidding aside, if your presence offended, then we would not be speaking about the past. I already forgave you. Don't bring it up again, because there are no debts to be settled." For something so minor and one-time, Chancer refused to keep debts. If he did keep debts that small, then he would be drowning in I-owe-you papers.
Chancer could see through what Brener was trying to accomplish in this conversation, and he much preferred for the man to come out and say what he really wanted. Chancer decided that this skipping around was now wasting his time in a somewhat boring location. The World's Edge was good and all, but the Royal Flush was much more entertaining. "So you are looking for a job?"

You're old Steve had Shade plants among the staff they take bets on illegal Zoid fights held in areas outside of Olympia. I always figured you were getting a cut from the top, but it seems that the incompetent Steve wasn't completely useless. If you want, I can point out who they are."That Chancer wasn't even remotely affiliated with Shade was a good thing, one less person to keep an eye on in that case. In fact it boded well for Brener since that meant that he and Chancer were natural allies against Shade, and Brener was in need of allies.
Chancer's dismissal of Brener's apology, was far more sobering, but Brener merely nodded. If Chancer said there was no debt, settled it was. What was more humorous was Chancer's complete nonplussed manner at cutting through Brener's roundabout speech about being unaffiliated. He actually laughed once he thought about it, Brener was being cautious! How unlike him."Yes, that is the only way to put it. I also may have heard a rumor that you are looking for pilots. I wasn't sure if I should test my luck, but if you'll have me: I'll be the best damned pilot on your team."
At that, Brener held out his hand. He, like everyone else, knew just how serious Chancer took deals and agreements. Particularly those sealed with a handshake. Chancer was not happy to hear about his former Steve. He suddenly felt cheated out of money. Not only was he not getting any money, but that Steve was earning his under Chancer's name. If that side business was discovered, it would put Chancer in more danger than anyone else. Chancer was a man that had everything to lose. He watched men in his position lose theirs because subordinates did things illegally. Hell, Chancer was the subordinate doing the illegal activity, but he was smart about it. That Steve wasn't smart enough to escape an illegal gambling accusation or even hide it from locals. Chancer was probably the only one in the building that did not know about this already.
Chancer removed his glasses and used a handkerchief wipe them clean even if it was unnecessary. It was a mechanism he used to weigh the value of an action, so whenever he did it, he was about to make decisions that ruined people's lives. "I want a list of names. All of them. I don't want them pointed out. I want to make examples of them later." Chancer took any threat to his business seriously, and that was no understatement. These people would be fired if Brener's accusations proved true and denied service at every Chancer's branch in the future.
"Those aren't rumors. However, my previous team was caught betting against themselves using a third party. I need a new team, but one is defined by the company one keeps, no? You, Mr. Brener, have had some very seedy company. Why should I believe you won't do what my former pilots did?" Chancer fired his previous team for breaking the one rule Chancers had when it came to pilots betting: betting against themselves. It is a punishable offense and illegal. Chancer liked to win, but that team jeopardized both him team winning and his business. Fixing the odds was not in Chancer's business' favor. They were fired in a manner that exposed what they were doing, subsequently killing their careers.
Chancer ignored the offered hand and the comment about being the best, but thought, The 'best' is relative, and right now, you would be the only one. This man didn't even know the contents of the contract, so his seriousness was being wasted. Chancer was not yet ready to make a deal, so this attempt at appealing to the deal maker inside of Chancer was lost to the business man within him. Chancer wasn't even ready to pass a copy of the contract to him yet, not that Chancer didn't have one on him. It just was not yet the right moment. If Brener wanted to win him over, then he was going to have to do more than give a handful of crooked employees up.

The mighty Chancer had been unaware of his subordinate's less than legal dealings. His demand for the list was cute, if Brener wasn't in need of allies he might have charged for the information. Though to be honest... Brener was likely to do that still, depending on how negotiations went. Still, letting the man know that he could provide such a list was a bargaining chip that he could play to his favor. Chancer's accusation however, almost brought a frown. Instead, Brener allowed a small sneer of defiance to appear.
"So? My association with the seedy underbelly was not entirely by choice. Nor should you play the saint, as you possess similarly seedy company. We are both stained by our company, but it doesn't prove who we are in the dark. To flip the scenario, why should I believe that you won't tell me to lose a match on purpose? In both cases, the answer is the same: pride. However you may call it: rules, honor, code... we have that in common. Besides, why would I bet against myself? Losing only hurts me, no matter the immediate financial gains by fixing a match. If I aim to make a career as a pilot, which I do, I need to minimize my losses. Just like you, as a manager, need to acquire pilots with exceptional records. Besides, considering my background, I'd get kicked out of any team if I couldn't deliver. I would not expect you to be different."
That Chancer ignored the proffered hand didn't dissuade or upset Brener, it simply meant the man was as cautious as his reputation suggested. Perhaps, some clarification was needed, Brener place the hand on the table but kept it extended."The gesture was one of mutual agreement to pursue further negotiations, hash out the details, not finalize an agreement. But I understand, you still have doubts."
Brener reached into his pocket, pulling out a flash-drive. He placed it on the table in front of Chancer."The drive holds videos of some of the matches I... participated while I piloted for Shade. I never lost, I never fixed a fight. You can see for yourself. Consider it my resume in lieu of an actual record from the Grand Prix. In fact, some of my fights were televised despite their... lack of legality."
With that, Brener leaned back and took another sip of his drink. The ball was now firmly in Chancer's court. To say Royland Chancer had seedy company would not be a false statement, but to tell him to his face was different from saying it behind his back. One would have to have a lot of gall to say such a thing, but to say it when Chancer was considering a deal with you would be insane. Chancer did not expect to have the reasoning to his own question to be turned around on himself. Indeed, he once possessed some seedy company, but he put them all in jail. He framed them of course, but they were dirty anyway. He saw it as an opportunity to clean up the gambling industry in Olympia, but there was also the benefit of taking over what was left behind. If there was great reward and little risk to taking a gamble, then it was guaranteed Chancer would be first in line. However, the very fact Brener did say such a thing to Chancer turned out to be ingenious. It gave Chancer a bit more confidence in making a deal with this pilot. In Chancer's opinion, mutual distrust was better than trust, because it could lead to a trust harder earned and thus harder to give up. The comment even gave Chancer a smirk to combat Brener's sneer.
"Though it may have some pride involved, I wouldn't tell you to lose a match, because I like to win. Winning is more important than money, because money comes and goes. Winning, however, brings legacy, and legacy is forever." With that statement, no response was needed to address Brener's expectations. Chancer's were now presented, so no one else's expectations mattered.
With a flash-drive on the table, Chancer reached into his jacket and gripped something. Anyone familiar with Chancer would know this was now a pivotal moment as to whether he would make a deal. If he pulled the left glove out, then he would be fully set to pursue a deal. Instead, Chancer signaled for Dave to fetch a computer of some type. The Head of Security was always paying attention, but he couldn't hear everything. He probably would have thrown Brener out for even insinuating Chancer had seedy company. Though Steve brought the tablet computer, Chancer thanked them both. He pulled out one glove before picking up the flash-drive and putting it into the computer. Unfortunately, it was his right glove, which meant he was not yet set on shaking hands. Chancer took several minutes to watch some of the video before placing it down on the table.
This time when he reached into his coat pocket, he removed two things. One was a rolled up contract, and the other was his left glove. He handed the contract to his future pilot before he put on the glove. "Look through that before we make an agreement. I doubt you will find issue with my terms."
Contract:
The following are conditions of the Contract. This Contract is between Royland Chancer, hereby known as Chancer, and Veric Brener, hereby known as the Employee on April 22. These Conditions shall be agreed upon with a formal handshake with Chancer.
(i) Job Function and Duration: The Employee shall be employed as (Pilot, Engineer) for a minimum of 3 seasons.
(ii) Hours of Work: For a Pilot, the work expectation is a minimum of 25 hours a week between matches, preparations, and practices. For an Engineer, the work expectation is 40 hours a week.
(iii) Salary:
For Pilot: Employee’s Per Match Salary will be 30,000. Employee must compete to earn wages and bonuses. In the event of a win, a bonus shall be awarded:
Singles Win Bonus: 20% of the award amount Doubles Win Bonus: 15% of the award amount Teams Win Bonus: 10% of the award amount
For Engineer: Employee’s Per Season Salary will be 140,000. A bonus shall only be awarded to an Engineer only if he/she personally worked on the winning Zoid(s):
Singles Win Bonus: 5% of the award amount per Zoid Doubles Win Bonus: 2.5% of the award amount per Zoid Teams Win Bonus: 1.25% of the award amount per Zoid
(iv) Private Sponsorship and Matches: This contract prevents the involvement of the Employee in unauthorized private sponsorship events that are not related to this team. Private sponsorship events include but are not limited to: additional contract signing, public appearances before an audience, advertisements not associated with Chancer Bookkeepers, etc. Chancer is not required to pay for an unapproved match event. This is enforceable by tasking Employee for any repair damage, denying medical care for injuries caused during these matches, and/or the possibility of employment termination.
(v) Benefits to Employee: In addition to payment, Employee shall have "on-the-house" access to consumables available for purchase at any Chancer's Bookkeepers. The Employee will also be provided a single room in a team apartment complex in a location to be determined by Chancer. Chancer will provide a single space in the team storage hanger to be used for a Zoid that is to be used in matches, if the Employee is a Pilot. In case of injury during a match, Chancer will pay for medical bills.
(vi) Zoid Maintenance & Improvement: Chancer pays Engineers to repair any damages to Zoids occurring during an authorized match. It is at Chancer's discretion to pay for Zoid improvements, including new weapons and upgraded systems. In the event improvements must be made, Chancer will negotiate with Pilot on financial burden of such improvements.
(vii) Leave of Absence: Approval and duration of unpaid personal leave shall be at the discretion of Chancer.
(viii) Dismissal: Chancer hopes that it will not become necessary to dismiss an Employee, however, Chancer reserves the right to end employment at anytime in anyway for any reason. Reasons for release include failure to meet expectations, being inappropriate with other Employees, or request to voluntarily depart. In such an event, an Employee will be compensated for anything owed immediately and released from this contract.
(ix) Voluntary Departure: In the case of voluntary departure, Chancer may choose to enforce this no-compete clause. In the event of that occurring, the Employee will not be able to compete in the Grand Prix for one full season.
(x) Confidentiality: Any exposure of confidential information about other Employees, the Team, or Chancer or his Business during or after employment will result in termination of contract and litigation.

It wasn't so much distrust, rather caution that prompted Brener to reread the contract. To see exactly what he was signing up for. When it came to legally binding contracts, there was no such thing as "too careful." Everything seemed to check out, nothing leapt at him as suspicious. All in all, a solid contract that was surprisingly enough: easy to understand.
"No issues, I just hope you'll have me in at least 5 matches per season, otherwise the engineers are getting paid more."His hand once more extended, the grin on Brener's faced showed that his comment was merely in jest. It would of course be up to Chancer who to field in every match, him or the team leader.
With that he figured the overall agreement had been cemented all that was left was to shake on it, and move into his new accommodations. Once that was done, it would be meeting his fellow pilots, the engineers and start prepping for the Grand Prix. If by chance, Brener was Chancer's first hire, then it would be up to Brener to help his employer search for any other staff that would be required for a successful team. Though since Chancer was the Team Manager it would be up to him, not Brener, who entered the team. Brener of course would advise to his best capacity. Both men wanted to win, and that drive would allow them to work well together.

Chancer observed Brener studiously reading the contract. It was interesting how a man of Brener's... character was so worried about what he was getting himself into. The man was a criminal that appeared to be concerned about the legality of it all. Chancer thought it strange for the apparent contradiction. He said nothing. Instead, he removed the flash-drive from the computer before picking up the latter. He also picked up the glass Dave had brought to him and held them both out for the Head of Security to take away. He left the flash-drive on the table for Brener to take care of. He was almost done here, and he preferred to leave the table without leaving anything for his employees to clean. When Brener was finally finished, Chancer smiled and shook the man's hand.
"I would say it, but I'm sure you've heard it before." Chancer referred to his accidental slogan, which was quite old. When everyone else started using it, its luster vanished. He mostly left it to be used by employees, customers, and his commercials now. This deal was done, so he then stood from his seat and began removing the gloves with his teeth, and again he checked his cuticles afterwards. They were still immaculate, so there was nothing more to do about it than to put the gloves away, which were swiftly tucked away into his coat. "Mr. Brener, I hope to have you in more than five matches, but at the moment, no one gets paid higher than you. You haven't even been paid, so that should tell you how many are on my team. I need engineers and at least two more pilots, so if you know any, tell them I'll be in Victor's Village at The Podium." Chancer hired Brener for the reason of information on the underground. The more information he had on the underground, the better he could defend against illegal gambling. Chancer wasn't sure how much he paid in taxes, but he was sure he declared his earnings enough to keep the Judges and everyone else out of his hair. A reference of Veric Brener likely would not be enough for Chancer to hire someone, so they would have to impress someone else. Chancer was not sure who, but he was sure it would work out.
As he started walking away, Chancer realized he had left something unaddressed, so he turned around. "Also, I would have already chosen a name if I still liked the name Chancer's Bookkies, but the last team ruined that name. It has negative connotations, now. When I'm done recruiting, we'll come up with something." Chancer continued his departure for The Podium. He hoped that the Steve there had garnered the attention of someone to be on the team, but before he left, Chancer said a few last things to his new pilot without turning around this time. "Have a good day, Mr. Brener, and do give that list of names to Dave. He's the silent type, but he'll know what to do with them."
