Me and couple older friends were talking about the latest/ ongoing thing . Now that the fight for LGBT equality have been raving on hard for quite some time now, people within the age category of 15 to a mere 20 have made LGBT a trend. By trend I mean going around saying they're gay, bi, or lesbian for the hell of it.
What are some of your thoughts about this?

Well i just hope they don't take it too lightly is all. Being a Transgender takes a lot of work and devotion so it kinda does suck if people are just throwing that out when they don't really mean it. That said I just kinda tell people I'm a transgender online and IRL when i know them more and probably more when I start transitioning.

I think this is NOT okay. I feel as though they are treating LGBT as a joke. They should take it seriously.
Someone shouldn't just go around saying they are transgender or homosexual unless they mean it. If they DO feel inside of them that they are that way; I say that you go for it, you ARE that person. But don't just joke around and do it because it's a "trend" because it's not. Transgender isn't a trend. Neither is homosexuality. It's not something to copy just to "fit in with the crowd", that's gross.

I know this girl at school who is extremely rude, and pretends shes a lesbian to be edgy. In fact, two girls I know pretend to be lesbians to be edgy or cool, but they get grossed out by lesbians...

Has anyone confronted them about this, or do they just let them be offensive?

For what? So you can be bullied, beaten and ridiculed? As a transman, I didn't ask for any of those things. Why would anyone? Do they know what being anything in the LGBTQ family entails? Did they miss the memo of how difficult it is? How much confusion? The pain, the ignorance? Depression? Fear?

Well the people that do this only do it for a short amount of time and can freely just stop whenever they want. It's not like they get bullied for playing around and pretending to be like us. If they're called the wrong gender it doesn't hurt them so really there's nothing to convince them to not do it anyways.

I think it's horrible. > A straight girl pretended to be pan and only dated me to brag to her friends about how she's " Pansexual omg so cool dating a transmale so exotic" > I know about a handful of people at my school who are all pretending to be homo/trans and give anyone whos actually homo/trans a hard time > All the time I hear " I want to be gay now so people will like me"
This must be stopped.

It's basically making a mockery among people who are in the LGBT community. I honestly don't get those who pretends. Do they get a hype out of playing pretend?

It's really not good that there are kids going around doing this; after all, it'll give those of us who really are LGBT a bad name. Society at large won't take any of us seriously, saying "Oh, it's just a trend. They'll grow out of it."
I might be over thinking this, but if this 'trend' is allowed to proliferate, the long term effects on the LGBT community as a whole could be very negative.
