In Avatar: The Last Airbender, everyone had learned bending from badgermoles, dragons, airbison, and the moon and ocean. But in Legend of Korra, they learned it from the lionturtles.... Did I miss something somewhere along the line??

Origin stories... well, there is thousands of legends in the world, and it is hard to know what is and isn't truthful...
Since it was 10,000 years ago... Over time, legends and myths would have changed... a lot.

Over time, legends and myths would have changed... a lot. That does make sense. And I guess the fact that you can learn bending from other things (like Toph and her learning it from badgermoles), I guess that would aid the different origin stories.

Also, remember the way Wan's people got Firebending from the lion turtle, but after he learned from the white dragon his was much...smoother, more...er, professional?
Like the kid who starts karate/kendo/any sport thinking he knows how to do it, and the teacher has to break him of bad habits and that false confidence and then actually start properly training him? If that makes sense... xp
So they sorta did learn it from those other sources, just they didn't get bending from those sources.
But the whole mixed up mythology after 10,000 years probably does have something to do with it too. xd
Even with the walking history lesson/encyclopedia that a fully realized Avatar with access to their past lives is. xd Clearly, most of them weren't interested in a history lesson. whee
Normal people (benders or not) had no way to access that information, and preserving knowledge for that long is really hard to do.
Even stuff like the pyramids, Great Wall, old ruins, the oldest records we have are what between 5K and 6K? This is 10K.
And genocidal spirits (I know, more complicated than that) followed by what was clearly some kind of war between the remaining humans. Fighting over who owns what land, I suppose. Hard for records to survive wars. sad Even without all those human flamethrowers running around. wink
