The Five
The Five are the Mega-Corporations which currently compete with each other for control over the vast resources available to Humanity. Each Mega-Corporation has hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of subsidiary companies operating under them producing all manner of products and technology. The Five are as follows: Hydra Industries, Daedelus Corp, Omnivolve Inc, Veridyne Systems and Hybrid Dynamics. Almost all of the companies are headed by a CEO or Executive Director, who has some group, counsel, cabinet or committee working directly under them to oversee operations on an intergalactic scale. In most cases there are various Executives in charge of Branches of the Corporation. These Branches vary Corp to Corp but most often break down to something along the lines of Military, Research & Development, Industry, Public Relations and Special Operations. Some have more but it is unlikely any has less. Division into such groupings is necessary as oversight can grow complicated enough for something as broad as an Industrial Branch of a Mega-Corporation. Below is a brief explanation of the general duties of each Branch.
Military
The Military's task is straight forward, it is the policing and enforcement of laws and the execution of military actions against hostile groups within or without the systems controlled by a Mega-Corporation. Although there was initially a fairly regular call for military personnel at the start of humanity's assimilation into the intergalactic community, wide-scale war is mostly a thing of the past at this point and the military forces are rarely mobilized into war-time action. They still train though, even though these days the deployments they are often sent on are either against other Mega Corporations or merely into uncharted space.
Research & Development
Research and Development is the group whose job it is to innovate. They dont mass produce anything but instead work to push the very limits of humanity's technological understanding to new heights. Often times they are heavily involved in xenotechnological research, most often on Qualin technology, attempting to reverse engineer and understand the processes that allow their intergalactic neighbors to thrive. They invent weapons for the military, medical technology and convince items for the general public, starships for humanity as a whole, and everything else under, above or around the sun.
Industry
If it is the job of R&D to come up with a new idea, it is up to Industry to produce it for the masses. The Industrial Branch of any Mega-Corporation is almost by default the largest and it is the most likely to be broken up into numerous Sub-Branches dealing with different products. Not always a glamorous Branch but it is the lifeblood of each and every one of the Five Mega-Corporations of today.
Public Relations
The idea that a Mega-Corporation could survive without a Public Relations Department is considered ludicrous. Teams of Clerks, Ambassadors, Lawyers and all manner of other functionaries work in Public Relations to reach out across the galaxy and spread the good name of their company, no matter how good that name actually is or not.
Special Operations
The fact that all Mega-Corporations have a very well funded SpecOps program is perhaps the most purposefully unkept secret in the universe. All Mega-Corporations hire teams of mercenaries, trouble shooters and specially chosen operative teams to take care of missions that might happen to fall outside of the company's technical jurisdiction or perhaps should not be recorded as official military or political actions. Life is rarely safe or boring for members of these teams.
