Homo Sapiens - Humanity

General Description

Humans are the relative newcomers on the Galactic scene. They have traveled far from their Homeworlds and have grown far beyond their humble roots but they are still seen as the next best thing to children by many of the other races within the intergalactic community. They have not the strange abilities of the Thran, physical prowess of the Saurin, technology of the Qualin or enlightened state of the Coven, yet they continue to improve and strive for greatness despite all opposition and set backs.

Government

There is no longer an overarching legislative body that can make demands of all of humanity. The highest powers within the human race are The Five, a group of Mega-Corporations that have pushed out, absorbed or destroyed all other competition and now roughly rival each other in constant bids for power, resources, fame and wealth. The Five are Hydra United, Daedelus Corp, Omnivolve Inc, Veridyne Systems and Hybrid Dynamics. More on the Five can be found at the appropriate Page. As a basic overview, each of the Five governs various star systems. Within their system their laws are absolute. Passing between the Star Systems though, it is questionable whether the weight of a decision in one will carry over. This is a source of annoyance and contention for many within the Five and is part of the reason they employ teams of Problem Solvers to ensure that their issues are resolved in house before things get out of their realm of control. The only realm where laws are not determined by the Five is within the Core Worlds, the center of humanity's realm of influence around Terra. Each of the Five has their main headquarters on Terra and while within the system all answer to the Counsel of Corporations and their Homeland Treaties. The laws and rules that empower and bind this sixth group are a mystery to all except the CEOs of the Five who have seats on the Counsel, but it is clear that when disputes reach a point where they cannot be resolved by any other means, the CEOs meet with the rest of the Counsel and the decisions reached must be upheld when sought.

Culture

The humans may not be the best at many things in the universe but if the Five were to pool their resources it is likely that Humanity would outweigh any other two races in terms of wealth. Humans constantly push new developments in all fields, as each of the Five has departments developing all manner of new technology and advances in industry. There are of course still worlds, further out from Core Worlds, that are relatively unadvanced and life resembles that of earlier generations. That said by and large the quality of life for humanity is generally improved over that of the past. Some jobs come with more risk and danger than others but with an increase in medical technology, the average person tends to live a longer, healthier life than they once did. Because of the importance of economic independence, crimes against individuals are often more severe if the crime in some way hinders the victim's ability to make money to provide for themselves.

Saurin - Intergalactic Mercenaries

General Description

If Humanity is seen as being the child of the universal family, then the Saurin are crazy uncle who occasionally tries to bite people who get too close. The Saurin have reptilian features but are otherwise relatively similar in morphology to humans. Their muscle mass is several times that of a human though, giving them greatly enhanced strength. Some wonder whether the Suarin's evolution was natural or forced in order to create the vicious warriors so many of them appear to be.

Government

The Suarin have no centralized government. They are fairly barbaric, not having developed interstellar travel on their own before being found by another sentient race. They were then either groomed or modified in order to turn them into warriors. Because of this they occasionally organize themselves into Clans that operate together in order to obtain more lucrative contracts but otherwise one Saurin is likely to be completely independent of another.

Culture

Culture would be a strong word to describe what the Saurin has but if one ventured so far as to apply it to the lizard-like race then militaristic would be a good descriptor. Power and status play large roles in interaction between individuals and combat is a pastime as much as it is an occupation for many Saurin. Casual violence seems fairly common place among their people, something that their enhanced strength makes uncomfortable, or deadly, to those who spend any significant time around them. As with any race, there is no universal constant and deviations do occur. That said many Saurin do seem to have some complex honor system. It is rare that a Saurin who has undertaken a contract as a mercenary will switch sides. At least not until his objectives are completely fulfilled on one side of the contract.

Thran - Enigmatic Elves

General Description

The Thran are a very mysterious group within the universe, extremely old, they have been a force to be reckoned with for thousands of years. That said, in recent years their numbers have seen a marked decline. The reasons for this are currently unknown, despite all manner of investigation and inquiry from numerous sources. Physically they tend to have tall, lithe bodies and smooth eerily attractive features. When humanity first met them the term "space elves" saw quite a bit of use, though never to a Thran's face once the term was explained to them. They are a proud people who values their privacy, very little information escapes about the Thran without their explicit permission. For instance, although it is widely known that many Thran possess unique and powerful abilities, it is unknown whether this is the result of technology, genetic modification or some other, stranger force being manipulated.

Qualin - Masters of Technology

General Description

The Qualin appearance is subject to some debate. There are some scientists who believe that the aliens project a form through their technology that allows humans to see them as they do: the most classical rendition of grey skinned aliens imaginable. Others insist that such conjecture is over-complicating the matter and that they are in fact what they appear as. Whatever the case may be though, the Qualin are known for their unrivaled comprehension of technology in all of its forms. Their progress level is leaps ahead of humanities and their inventions are generally so advanced as to be virtually indistinguishable from magic in many cases.

Culture

Not a great deal if readily known about the Qualin culture aside from their voracious love of technology and their ceaseless pursuit to improve their understanding of it. The Qualin are noted for their lack of human-motivated morality, in that their view of right and wrong rarely coincides with what a human might think on the matter. This is especially true in regards to their use of live individuals as test subjects for their various inventions and advancements. The idea of justifying the extinguishing of a life or even multiple lives for the progress towards better technology for all doesn't seem to even factor into their conscious thought process. That said they are not known to be especially xenophobic, willing to trade and communicate with other races although they rarely ask for much aside from raw materials for their work or occasionally information from an outside perspective.

Qualin - Masters of Technology

General Description

The Coven is the only race in the universe more mysterious than the Thran. The Coven are a race of pure energy constructs. Theories abound when it comes to the Coven. Many people that there are no individual entities, rather just one unified energy that can manifest in multiple places. Some believe the Coven to be an incredibly advanced form of Artificial Intelligence, while others believe them to be a race that as a whole transcended the need for physical bodies or separation. The Coven are silent on the matter to outsiders though it would seem. They can manifest themselves through people and technology, taking over the bodies of their host and acting through them. This is an ability that is still feared to this day, as the Coven genuinely dont seem to understand the invasive nature of this body-jacking.
