At first, Alex may seem awkward and moody--because, well, she is--but mostly due to her shyness towards new people. She is eager to make relationships with others but, considering most of her friends are dead, she doesn't quite know how to go about it. She wants to believe in others but finds it hard put faith in anyone. However, once she gets close to someone her true nature comes out: fun-loving, sarcastic, and ambitious. If you are her family or she considers one a friend she will stop at nothing to keep them safe.
Her ability to hold a grudge is legendary and if someone gets on her bad side they will forever have a target on their back. She is not above childish pranks or cold, hard revenge. Alex has a particularly hard time expressing her feelings and often takes out her frustration on the object of her affections.

Alex was born on February 14, the day of love, which to this day she considers a cruel joke from the Gods. She lived alone with her mother and spent most of her childhood by her side. Always loving and understanding, they shared a very close bond. The only time her mom became frustrated with her was when she asked about her father. Seeing how uncomfortable the subject made her, Alex eventually stopped bringing it up. Her mother owned a small book shop, the only one in town featuring rare and unique books. Ever since she was young she had a hard connecting with people so she found company in the books.
For as long as she could remember Alex could see and talk with ghosts. At the time she thought this was completely normal. Every time she spoke one of her "special" friends her mother look uneasy but never said anything, writing it off as the usual imaginary friends. That was until she told her mother that her friends said they were dead. Her mother went berserk and forbad her ever speaking with them again. The first and only time her mother ever struck her is when she refused to give them up. Her mom immediately apologized and told her the dead where dangerous and she was worried. Alex continued to talk with them but never mentioned a word of it to her mother again. Because of that she would speak to them outside the house more but soon found that it wasn't as normal as she thought. Kids started calling her a freak and telling her she was insane so much that she started to believe them.
As she went into middle school she found herself becoming stranger and stranger still. Her affinity for dead things and apparent talking to herself made her a pariah among her peers. When kids made fun of her she would run to a secluded place close her eyes and think of home and when she opened them again she was in her bed. At first it freaked her out and she dared not tell her mother about it but she soon got the hang of it and used it as a quick means of transportation. Although she loved them, live animals seemed to hate her so she played with the reanimated corpses of dead ones instead.
One day when she thirteen and was playing with the dead in the woods out side of town she was attacked by a winged beast. It was the first time she ever used her shadow powers to attack and barely managed to escape with her life. Battered and bloody, Alex ran back to her house. When her mother saw her she instantly knew what happened. She grabbed Alex tightly and as the tears flowed so did the story of her true origins. Alex found it all so hard to believe but it explained so much about her life. Once her mother calmed down she brought Alex to the basement and showed her a oak chest she had never seen before. In it piece of paper with the words Camp Half-Blood and a map. She spoke of Camp Half-Blood was place that people like her went but her mom said she didn't trust it and refused to let her leave in favor keeping Alex safe at home. In one of her books, her mom found a spell to keep the house safe from monster who would try to harm them.
For two years Alex almost always stayed in her house or the bookstore, the places where the spell was in effect. She had to quit high school and start homeschooling. Since she still could converse with the dead it wasn't all bad but her mothers health was slowly deteriorating. Alex realized to keep the spell up it costed her mother some of her life energy. Although she promised her mom she would stay in the house and as much as she didn't want to leave her, Alex couldn't stand to see her get sicker anymore. One night, she grabbed her sword, a backpack with as much belongings as she could carry, her map, and with a kiss on her mother's sleeping forehead and ran away to Camp Half-Blood.
