Quick background, my boyfriend's traveled all around Europe -- a couple times -- bummed from port to port in the Caribbean, loves to travel. I signed on with a school exchange when I was fourteen and thus can boast two barely-remembered weeks spent in Tokyo, and I've poked around up and down my coastline here as far north as Port of Angeles and as far south as Rosarito. Point is, we've never of us been to the East Coast.
We've decided we're going to take a week in New York City. Here's where the brain-picking comes in: our window of opportunity is the second half of April through the month of May. So... how's the city around then? We're well on our way to summer out here by then, is it still chilly most of the day there usually, or...?
And part two: I expect at least a day or two will be spent in Central Park, what with how much there is to see and do there, and I'm sure we'll find ourselves on the ferry at some point... hoping it's just a statue and not a weeping angel out there... xD But both of us like to find ways to get away from most of the crowd, find places most tourists won't ever hear of, you know. So... throw suggestions my way -- especially ones that involve side doors and secret handshakes. whee

Well, I'm an upstater (born in Albany, currently residing in Rochester) and I've only been to NYC on occasion, but I can help you with the weather question.
Typically, spring starts around that time for us, but it can still be a bit unpredictable. I remember Aprils and Mays where it's shorts weather one day, and winter coat weather the next. The question is really what you consider to be chilly. This is my first year living in Rochester, and it's absolutely freezing here in the winter, so much so that I now consider 20 F to be warm. My grandparents were originally from here, but moved to Georgia and now they consider 50 F to be chilly, where I think it's the most perfect temperature in the world.
I've never been to Central Park, but I did go on the ferries once! Don't worry, the last time I actually saw the statue, it wasn't a weeping angel, but that was almost ten years ago. Things could change. If you do go on a ferry, Ellis Island is a nice place to go too.
I'm not too certain about side doors and secret handshakes, since I've only gone to NYC with my school, and well, when you're in fourth and seventh grade they tend not to encourage that sort of stuff. xD

No, my brain keeps trying to tell me that F is really a C...
*coffcoff* I was half-hoping that the midwest's occasional surprise blizzard in April was just, like... there... *sigh* It is one thing to know, intellectually, that I'm spoiled as far as weather's concerned. It's another to realize that my intellect is itself pretty damn insulated -- I'm about to go outside to feed the cats, and it's about 50 out (there's a storm offshore, it's giving us a lot of cloud cover), and I'm looking around for my socks and shoes, because as far as I'm concerned it's pretty da- er darn chilly. rofl
I still don't trust that statue... though, to be fair, I'd have a hard time believing there's a single nanosecond in which someone isn't looking at it.
