This room belongs solely to Zero, as he is not safe to be around for long periods of time.

((Zero enters from Gym)) Typing in the security codes and undoing the locks, Zero enters his room and cleans up real quick (cleaning up, more like hiding-er, securing, classified information) before Kali comes in.

((Kali enters from Gym)) ⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali wandered in with slight caution. She always did. Her eyes wandered, taking a mental photograph of everything she could see. Though, she did it unwillingly. Old habits die hard and learned memory wasn't helping.
She noticed Zero moving around the room, hiding things, although it wasn't all that obvious. She noticed, but said nothing. If she really wanted to know, she would ask, but was never one to ask for anything. That was probably her biggest fault.

Zero noticed that he was being watched, but didn't comment on it. He knew that was Kali's automatic response to anything new, and just being here, in the Academy, was turning her whole world upside down. Sighing, he motioned for her to sit on the bed. "I'm going to tell you the hidden story of mine...nobody knew what happened to me during the three years I was AWOL from the military. Nobody except me. And now you. I want your word that what is spoken about here stays in this room. And, of course, I will do the same. Whatever we know about each other, I'll keep your secrets if you keep mine. Do we have a deal? Do I have your word?" He stood, looking at her calmly, waiting for an answer.

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali watched Zero make his way to his bed. When he motioned for her to sit on the bed, she thought nothing of it and did. The bed was comfortable and neat.
"I told you," Kali said. "Your secrets are not mine to give away. I've been trained to die before giving information. I would die before I gave what is not mine. If words are all you want, I'll give you that. What is said between us as far as pasts will not be repeated by me."
Kali wasn't used to making promises. She had always been told one thing and expected to do the other. Told about secrets and expected to keep them. The only words needed from her were Yes, sir. When Zero waited for her promise, she only hoped that what she said would be enough.
What does it mean when someone gives you something to keep safe?
It means they trust you...Can I be trusted? Can this monster ever be trusted?

Zero finished his story, looking at the floor. Then he looked up to Kali, his eyes filled with pain. "You see, you're not as bad as you think. Or, at least, you're not the only one. This is why I can say that I understand you. This is why I want you to trust me. Please, Kali. Let somebody in." ((M and I had agreed to bypass the storytelling.))

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali listened to Zero, as he told his story. He shared his secrets, clearly feeling guilty for everything he had done. A storm of emotion seemed to take him. It played in his eyes. Kali felt nothing.
They are the same, yet different...We are the same, in some ways. But so different in many others. Why should I let anyone in?
Kali studied Zero for a moment. "Perhaps we are alike, but we are still different," she paused. "You regert what you have done. I don't"
What does it mean to let someone in?

"That's just it, Kali. Some part of you has to regret it, buried deep down inside, just as some part of me doesn't. I...I...I enjoyed it, reveled in it. It was fun! But that's my crazy side talking. I went insane, yet I wanted more..."

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali shook her head, slightly. "No. I don't regret what I have already done," she paused. "That doesn't mean that I condone it and it doesn't mean that I want to continue doing it."
Kali sighed. Life outside of the facility was complicated. The freedom to think, she almost wanted it taken back. The prison almost seemed like a good alternative to freedom.
"I didn't enjoy it. I don't enjoy fighting. It doesn't mean that I don't know how or that I'm not good at it." She frowned and thought even more about the complexity of life. She hadn't found anything that brought her any kind of pleasure. Teenagers were annoying. Teachers were annoying. Reading was boring and all that she knew was to fight.
Did she enjoy it? No. Was she good at it? Yes.
Did she have any regrets? No.

"Well, you can change. Look at me, I've changed. I've become a better person. It doesn't change my past, but it will change my future." Pacing the room now, Zero thought why is it so hard to convince her? Doesn't she want help?

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali watched Zero pace the room as he spoke. Change. She wanted change. She didn't quite know how it was all going to pan out but she knew that she wanted to be different than she was. She didn't want to be remembered as a killer. She didn't know what her options were. There were so many things that she could become. She already considered herself to be a monster, and she had convinced the world that she was one too. She wanted to be anything but that.
Zero looked like he was searching for something from Kali. She stood up from her seat on the bed and stopped in front of him. She moved her head to peer into his eyes. Her hands laced behind her back in curiosity.
"You are searching for something," she said. It wasn't a question, she knew the face. She continued studying Zero's face. "I've lived a life that was chosen for me. Fights, orders...whether I follow them, I'm used to them. Freedom, not so much. I am overwhelmed and I'm told I need a hobby," she shrugged. "I don't even know what that is and I don't know where to start with change. I'm not a fan of it. I like routine...."
She stopped. What was she saying? Was that what he was looking for?

Forced to stop when Kali came up to him, Zero took a step back, surprised. She studied his face as he studied hers, and when she spoke, the words seemed to come from far away. She was beautiful, yet she didn't realize it. He suddenly felt an urge he hadn't had in a long time, and he looked away and backed up from her quickly. "I'm...I'm searching for..." Zero shook his head, unable to complete that sentence. "Change is good," he said, changing the subject. "You may not like it, but it's good. Or do you want to be a killer all your life?" He looked up at her, straight into her eyes, not a challenge, just pure curiosity. "Do you want to be remembered as a mutant hunter?"

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali watched Zero back up. Fear? She wasn't sure why but then she wasn't sure about a lot of things. She continued studying Zero. Her eyes calculated his motives. He wasn't going to fight and she wasn't either. She didn't understand people, even more than she did not understand herself.
She blinked when he asked if she wanted to be remembered as a mutant hunter or a killer. "No," she said as if it were even a question. "I've only ever followed orders...I've never killed anyone I wasn't ordered to," she said as it if mattered why. The laws had stated that what she did was wrong. She had tried to say that the victims had been far worse and had what she brought them, coming. But she was just like them, if not worse.
"No," she said, again. "But I don't know what I want to be remembered for."

⇢ frøm thε αshεs » A FIRE SHALL BEWOKEN « Kali tilted her head slightly to the left at Zero's smile. Did I say something funny? Why is he smiling?
"And until then," she asked. "What happens if I never answer that question?"
There were so many questions. So many choices. So many things that she did not understand that most others did and she knew it. Most others would not know what to do if their freedoms were taken away. She didn't know what to do with freedom. She was never given that choice. What did she do in her free time? She trained. Now, that seemed to be against the rules. She had classes. Classes that were pointless. Classes that she would fail, regardless of how much she knew the material because everything was on paper. Flamable sheets of paper, marked with wood and graphite.
Stupid, stupid girl...you don't belong here. You know nothing of this life. You can't even survive in it.
Kali broke her eyes away from Zero's. "There is something else..."
What are you doing? Don't tell him! He is already keeping one secret and you put his life in danger. Don't tell him! You can figure it out on your own! Keep him out!
