With fresh snow on the ground out side, Aiden made sure to tie his boots twice and wear an extra layer under his coat. He kissed his grandmother on the cheek and said goodbye to his grandfather. After last nights dream, Aiden wanted to see Granny. Maybe because of the snow storm last night his nightmare was the worst it's been so far.

"Bye Birdie, Pop." With the goodbyes out of the way, he made his way into town. His grandparents thought he was going to the bookstore. He planned on stopping by on his way home, but he wasn't going there first. Aiden hunched his shoulders and nuzzled his face down into his jacket. The walk wasn't long, but it took longer than it should have. Aiden hated ice. He never liked it, but now it was almost terrifying to slip on it. With snow and ice on the ground, he walked slower than most.

Everything was going good, no slips. Whenever he looked up it was between steps, to make sure he was going the right way. He watched his breath hang in the air every now and then, but focused on his steps. As he walked farther into town, he kept an eye out for the coffee shop. Usually he smelled it before he realized he was there. It's time for a pit stop when it comes into sight.

The excitement for a hot chocolate distracted Aiden enough to misstep right on a patch of ice. A small noise passed his lips as Aiden's foot slipped out from under him and he fell right on his butt. "Ouch!" He didn't know what to do. His butt was cold and hurt. It wasn't a particularity hard fall, but it still hurt and was embarrassing. He didn't even want to look up to see who saw it. All the boy could do was take a deep breath to keep the tears that were welling up from spilling over and down his cheeks.

The day had gone surprisingly well for Amelia. Things were finally starting to look up for the brunette, who was having a hard time being down as she had been only a few weeks ago. Though her time at the shelter was up, she had a plan and was taking steps towards putting it into action. The only thing that got her was how slow that process had to be.

She was leaving the cafe when she heard it, the slick of rubber on ice, a body thudding against the ice and a sharp cry of surprise. Huddled into her coat, Amelia turned and saw that a child sat on the ice, victim to the half hidden patch thanks to the darkening skies and snow. That, more than anything, held her attention and pulled at her sympathies. He had a haggard and frightened look to him, but most of what she saw was fatigue and dismay.

“The ice is out to get everyone tonight, it seems,” she mused with a smile, kneeling down to the boy with an outstretched hand. “It got me going inside, too.”

The boy wasn't expecting help, honestly, so when it was offered to him he just froze. Quickly, he lifted one hand to his eyes to rub the tears from his eyes. Aiden then looked up, unsure if he should take the hand offered to him or stand up on his own. He decided to try and stand on his own. Of course that didn't work out how he planned either. His boots, which were supposed to be slip resistant, slid around again. Before the woman could take her hand back he clung to it with both of his hands.

Once he had his balance again, Aiden shuffled off the ice, to a place on the sidewalk that clearly had salt on it. Now on solid ground, he took a breath and looked back to her. He realized he still had her hand in a tight grip and dropped it. "I'm sorry if I grabbed your hand too tight." The boy's eyes cast downward before remembering his manners. "Oh, and thank you for your help!"

Aiden looked around, the idea of going inside was a welcome one. He smelled the faintest scent of coffee in the air just as his eyes landed on the cafe. "Do you want a coffee?" His gaze landed back on her, hopeful that she would agree so he could properly thank her.

Watching the boy was like a cruel cartoon, his body failing him as it continued to flail along the ice and break his balance. Amelia was about to pull her hand away, believing he had control at last when his hands reached out, clinging desperate to her own for support. Her knees locked, preventing them both from sliding by some miracle.

“It's alright.” Smoothing her oversized coat, Amelia shook her head and raised a brow at the young boy instead. “Kids your age drink coffee?”

At the question, Aiden couldn't help a small smile. Of course he didn't drink coffee, he's only nine after all. He doesn't even like the taste of it, no matter how much of it was made with cream. "Of course not, it stunts growth you know." He used a tone that made it seem like a fact everybody knew.

"I like hot cocoa, with lots of marshmallows." Why did she need to know that? Aiden didn't know, but it too was a fact. Hot chocolate was always better with marshmallows and even better when made with milk instead of water. Even if he would drink a hot cocoa, the woman didn't seem too keen on taking him up on the offer. Instead of letting her turn him down, he looked up at her. "Please? You helped me up so I want to thank you. It's cold and everybody needs something warm to drink." If she still wouldn't take the hot beverage, what ever she would end up wanting, he would probably end up giving her the Hot Hands in his pockets so she could have something to keep her warm.

Amelia chuckled, surprising herself with the sound as she shook her head. “You'd be surprised. I've heard of kids your age drinking it like it was going out of style.” Her phrasing was out of style, too, but she didn't care. She was amazed at the boy's manners; he was so polite for someone so young. Paired with the dark shadows under his eyes, she couldn't help but wonder what his story was.

Following Aiden into the cafe, Amelia felt the tension ease form her shoulders as she collided with a wave of familiar warmth. The scent of baked goods wasn't as strong as it would be in the morning, but it was still pleasant when blended with the various coffees and other drinks.

She didn't really want to put the burden on him, but the boy insisted once again, so she relented. A hot drink on a cold night was always a blessing, but she would make sure it was a cheap one. Looking over the menu, Amelia nodded. “A small oolong tea, please.”

The thought of others drinking it made the boy wrinkle his nose. "Well, they're probably all short." Regardless of if "everybody else was doing it", Aiden had no desire to start drinking the bitter drink.

Happy that she seemed to give in and let him buy her something, Aiden smiled upon entering the shop. On his way in, he had been careful to stay on the salted path. Inside was warm and greatly welcome. Although he didn't like the taste of coffee, it did smell good. He followed his nose to the short line and looked at the menu.

Aiden let Amelia go first. After all ladies always went first. Once she placed her order, he shook his head a little. "Make it a medium please," he told that barista. His grandparents gave him money for the bookstore so he didn't mind spending it. Especially if it was as a thank you. "Can I have a medium hot chocolate and..." Aiden looked at the display for the baked goods, unsure what he wanted to munch on. Everything looked so good.

The bell to the store went off, letting him know there was another person soon to be in line. Quickly he decided on a banana nut muffin. It was big enough to share if his savior wanted some. "A banana nut muffin please." Aiden dug in his book bag, careful to go into the correct pocket. Just looking at the dream catcher made him feel drained. As soon as he got his wallet he closed the bag and paid.

He stepped out of line and went to wait for their drinks at the other end of the bar. A sudden realization hit the boy as he stood there, looking at the decorations in the cafe. Quickly, he turned to the woman and stuck out a hand. "My name is Aiden, what's yours?"

Amelia cracked a smile at Aiden's remark, a rare sight for the brunette. It felt strange to be talking to someone so young, as if she had forgotten it was possible or how to do so. Kids just didn't approach her all that much, but then again, she had been the one to approach the young man. She still wasn't sure why she had done so and wondered if her fatigue was finally catching up with her.

The cafe was a warm and welcoming place in both atmosphere and temperature, though no particular holiday decorations could be seen. It felt snug, a little slice of home away from home where you could relax and chat with a friend without being drowned out by music or other patrons. Even the engraved counter had a soft and simple elegance to it.

It's nice to meet you, Aiden. My name's Amelia.” She stepped closer to let another customer pass, smiling down at the boy who seemed too mature for his years. Was it possible he was hiding something behind those well polished manners? Anything was possible.

Aiden thought he saw a smile, but didn't say anything about it. Surely it wasn't an unusual thing for the girl. He looked at the decorations in the cafe, wondering why she helped him. Had he looked that pathetic? The boy bit his lip and shook his head. These dreams were ruining what little confidence he had in himself.

He shook her hand and then took his hand back, a smile on his own lips. "And it's nice to meet you too," he paused before trying the name on his lips, "Amelia." Their drinks were called, and he went to get them. Since he also had a muffin, he handed Amelia her drink and then took the plate with the warmed muffin. Turning around he looked around for a seat.

"Is there okay?" Aiden hadn't even thought the fact that she might not want to sit and talk with him. There was something about her that made him want to get to know her better. It was almost like she had a glow of.. something that pulled him toward her. Maybe it was just because she wasn't picking on him or a constant reminder of his parents death. She was a new face, it was bright instead of the usual guilt of not knowing how to greet him. 'Do we say we're sorry? Do we act like it never happened? Do we tell him it's been long enough and he should stop moping?' Aiden could read the thoughts they couldn't say, right on their faces. But Amelia didn't have that guilty look, no she was a blank slate and was kind enough to help him after he slipped.

The fact that the cafe was non-smoking meant that Amelia didn't have much of a preference where they were, so long as the spot was out of the way of the draft coming through when the door opened. She nodded at Aiden's question, noticing how he seemed hopeful and skeptical at the same time. Again, she noticed the dark shadows under his eyes, though his smile seemed genuine. It, like hers, was polite and not necessarily ready to eat his entire face with endless amounts of energy that she saw in many kids. Maybe it was her curiosity that had caused her to say yes, and nothing more?

It's fine,” she assured the boy as she took her mug, picking one seat so that Aiden could sit across from her. The heated ceramic felt good against the lingering cold in her hands.

Now, of course, there was the tricky, winding labyrinth of polite conversation to work through. “Do you come here often, Aiden? The barrista seemed used to you being here.

Once the two had sat down, Aiden smiled and pushed the muffin into the middle. He had forgotten silverware and hopped up again to get some. When he returned he had a knife and two forks, just in case Amelia wanted to use it instead of her fingers. With gentle fingers, not wanting to man handle the muffin and ruin Amelia of anything she may want to eat from it, the boy pealed the muffin tin away and then cut it in half. So it would be easier to eat he cut it once again the other way.

Aiden smiled and set the knife down gently. He looked up at her then around the cafe. "I like to come here. It's on the way to Granny's house. Though, I usually don't make it there like I want to." Whenever Aiden would leave to see Granny, he would get distracted by the town's Bookstore and the Cafe. Some how though, even without going to see her the things the town offered to him calmed him down. It made him feel like he could actually sleep through a night, though when it came down to laying down he never did sleep. A small frown tugged on his lips, his blue eyes glancing down to his bag. The blonde sighed and shook his shaggy hair.

"How about you? Have you been in here before? The food is good." Aiden nodded to the muffin and picked up one of the triangle pieces he cut. Politely he took a bite and set what he didn't eat on the plate again, careful not to touch Amelia's half. Aiden wasn't sure if she would even eat it. As the boy chewed he kept a hand over his mouth, not wanted to be loud and obnoxious about chewing. Once he was done with his bite, Aiden mimicked Amelia and held his hot cocoa in his hands. Once the warmth spread threw his hands becomingly, Aiden took a sip. It was still hot, but he knew how to drink it as not to burn his lips or mouth.

Amelia still couldn't get over how polite Aiden was. She watched the boy hop down from the table, listened to his manners and watched all the little gestures that made him seem unreal, or perhaps a dream himself. The kids she remembered and saw these days were mostly spoiled brats, and even the better ones didn't go that far.

“Sometime I come here,” she admitted with a small nod. Setting her mug down on a napkin, Amelia studied Aiden for a moment, lost in thought. She hadn't missed how careful he was with his bag, but assumed that it had something fragile or precious in it. The look he gave it now, however, was fearful. She could feel sympathy goosebumps raise on her own arms beneath the fabric of her sweater.

“Does your grandmother live nearby?” She could see Aiden bringing his grandmother to the quiet cafe some days, or perhaps bringing something home to her if the woman wasn't able to get about on her own. And yet, for all that he was sweet-tempered, the brunette knew what it was like to be fooled by something like a sweet smile or enthusiasm. It was a mixed reaction that left her stomach churning before she managed to push the thoughts away. Aiden was a kid of, what? Eight, maybe ten? Was she really so far gone off her rocker that she doubted kids, too, or was it the lack of sleep causing her to seem incoherent?

It made him smile, though politely, to hear that she had been here before. Though, he tilted his head in thought. Why hadn't he seen her before? It was very likely he was too into whatever book he was reading, or even snoozing in the corner for a quick nap after a restless night. Whatever the reason had been, he knew he had not seen her in the cafe before.

The mention of "his" grandmother made him laugh quietly and nod. "Yes, she does. But she's not related to me." He paused to decided how to explain it. "It's more like she's helping me with.." Again he paused, glancing at his bag once more. "Nightmares. Or, a nightmare. It's what everybody calls her." The laugh he made earlier was clearly gone, if the frown pulling at his lips said anything. They were getting worse, it's what he wanted to talk to granny about.

Aiden looked down at the muffin and seemed to be lost in his own thoughts for a few moments. Was this mysterious person right? Was the whole accident his fault? He had distracted his parents when he shouldn't have. Why did it have to happen? Why was the deer out in the middle of the road? Tears were starting to pool in his eyes. Quickly he blinked them away and lifted a hand to his nose. With his sleeve he wiped it and sniffled. Aiden cleared his throat and took another piece of the muffin. Almost as if he didn't want to explain what Amelia just witnessed, he stuffed the muffin in his mouth. This time it was much less polite, but he still covered his mouth as he chewed the piece.

Amelia wasn't too concerned as to why she hadn't come across Aiden in the cafe before. Most of her chances to do so were during her breaks at the bookstore a couple of streets over, so he was probably in school. She tilted her head to the side, watching him as she listened to the explanation that Granny was a nickname rather than a relative of his. At the mention of the familiar name, Amelia's eyes lit up, her expression warming as she nodded.

“Ah, so you've met her, too?” Her smile turned sad as she realized what this could mean for Aiden. With the way he seemed jittery and fearful, Amelia wasn't placing any bets on his experiencing pleasant dreams. She had come out with a blessing on that one, though the voice in the dream still puzzled her. To have so much hope inside you that you feel like it will burst from your chest at any moment and envelope everyone, that it's so much bigger than you but still trapped inside your own skin, was an exhilarating experience as well as frightening. It shouldn't be possible to hold that much hope inside you, to be so...confident about it. But the more she had the dream, the more potent it became and the more she remembered, it also felt right. If only there was a way to pass that on to Aiden. He looked like he could use some.

She decided to take the plunge and ask a very pertinent question while Aiden was chewing, preventing him from changing the topic right away.

“Do you have...special dreams, then?”

Though his mouth was full, he nodded at her question. The dreams were getting worse, but Aiden still had some sliver of hope left. Of course, it wasn't from Amelia, yet. It was more like Granny was the first person to seem so sure of being able to help. Being so sure that this would work. The woman didn't doubt herself or her creations. He hand no choice but to believe in her. It was the only option he had.

With most of the muffin in his mouth gone, Aiden took a slow sip of his hot chocolate. Once he swallowed, he sat back, pulling his legs up and to his chest. The heels of his feet sat on the ledge of his seat, keeping his legs up. Amelia's question made Aiden's stomach churn. They weren't special. They were terrifying. He just wished they'd stop. Aiden looked down at his legs then over the tops of his knees. The boy pulled his drink between his legs and chest, holding it with both hands. After a deep breath he looked back to Amelia.

"My dreams are horrifying. He blames me, says its my fault. It's not!" His voice rose more than he had planned. Embarrased by his outburst, he ducked his head down. "It's not.." Aiden quietly mumbled into his knees. The boy sniffled and took another sip, avoiding Amelia's face. He hadn't meant to shout like that, but it wasn't his fault. It couldn't be..
