The Mermaid
The name Atargatis is from Middle Eastern Legends. According to these legends she was once a goddess and after giving birth to a being of great evil she took the life of her lover and assumed the form of a mermaid.
The Atargatis of Gaia was born from the first foam of the sea. The celestial being breathed life into her as they created the oceans of the land. She awoke with a gurgling purr at her creators as she looked around in wonder at the other guardians of the elements. They told her you are the guardian of water and with this guardianship comes great power. You are free to instill in the hearts of many a cross this land a love of water, you may even choose to instill them with magic so that they might move waters as you do. Atargatis took this to heart and searched for beings like herself and seeing as there were none yet on this earth she gave some the power to grow fins at will and forever swim among her many lands.
She is a being of two mindsets. Her primary mindset is calming and peaceful and searches to help those in need. Because of this personality water magic can be used to heal and sooth. Many with the core element of water within them find themselves drawn to healing practices such as doctors of assorted practices. There are some that find themselves attached to bodies of water and become sailors, surfers, marine biologists or lifeguards.
Atargatis' second mindset is one that causes pain and turmoil. This brings about the destructive tsunami and tidal waves.
