As you step in, you breathe in the scent of books.

There are many different books here. Most of them are old, but some of them are modern. You spot a few that aren't even in bookstores yet.

There are several tables that are scattered among the shelves, which line the walls and are organized into neat aisles. The books are organized first by category, then by subject, then by author. There's a large book on a podium that holds the directory.

At the back of the library there are a few shelves cordoned off. If you ask the librarian, she'll simply tell you that is the restricted section. The school has some books that are only for older students, and those older students need permission from a teacher. She says not to worry, the books aren't dangerous, they simply contain concepts and spells that are far beyond most students' level.

She welcomes you to pick out a book and begin to read. There are not only textbook and informational books in this library, there are also books for reading pleasure. Feel free to sit down at a table and start reading.

Welcome to the Library!

Averill Hammershod

It took what seemed like days to reach the library, but finally Averill could see the big wooden doors.

"Thanks Naomi!"He gave his house rep a big cheesy smile.
"Good luck with your project!" The dwarf boy waved to the taller blonde and shuffled inside, hopefully bringing Ella along with him.

"Wooooah." He breathed, looking up and down the aisles. It was like the common rooms but....more? And certainly more well organized.
He immediately became business-like. "Okay, Ella, we're going to have to find a book on charms because I can't remember what the teacher said in class, and also the magic theory and elements homework was reading, this week, so we'll need those too." He listed things, ticking them off on his fingers.
"The creatures teacher hasn't told us to read anything in particular, and the Study of Merlin teacher pretty much won't be testing us at all, so they're nothing to worry about." He looked contemplative, trying to remember all the classes. He was sure he'd forgotten one.
"Oh! And potions. Er. We're mostly just working on terminology. So maybe we should pick up a glossary too."

Ella was impressed, watching Averill collect what they needed for studying. He had almost changed completely, from excitable and energetic, to a ready to teach and learn serious instructor.

Her head spun as he listed the subjects. It was hard enough missing a day of regular school, but missing so much in a school where the subjects are all completely foreign was a nightmare. She had no idea where to start! She was that much more appreciative of Averill's help. She hoped she could pick up on things quickly.

"Do you need help carrying anything? Where shall we sit?" She offered to help so she wouldn't be standing there like the lost sheep she was.

Naomi watched the two first years look around the library. It certainly was an impressive room; big, with countless shelves. Naomi was sure there were some that hadn't been read in decades. "Welcome to the library. Don't drown in books. I think the library's moving some books around too, so don't be surprised if you can't find what you're looking for." She turned to head out. "I'll be somewhere else. There's probably someone else in the library right now anyway."

And with that, Naomi strolled down the hall and out of sight.

Shanta closed the book with a huff. Done. After weeks of slow work, she was done with this project. Now all that was left to do was to organize the notes and send them off. She needed to treat herself, she decided. Humming a cheery tune in Elvish, Shanta tidied up her workspace, squaring the notes and putting the quill pen and ink away before stacking the books and setting them behind her on her carpet.

With that, Shanta floated out of the corner of the library and started floating through the shelves. Where did she take these out from again...? Out of the corner of her eye she spied two other students: Averill and some girl she didn't recognize. Out of habit, she offered them a wave and a cheery grin.

Averill shook his head at Ella. "No, I can carry these- there are only three, anyway!" He laughed a little at the thought of needing help with three textbooks. Dwarves would have been teased mercilessly back at home if they couldn't handle carrying a few measly lumps of paper.

Walking towards the tables set out for students, he noticed Shanta give them a smile and wave. He waved back, inwardly confused about whether or not the flyingcarpetgirl was being friendly or just polite.
He dumped his bag on a chair, then dumped the books they'd picked up during his little speech onto the table.
"So which do you want to start with?" He asked, sitting down heavily.

Rin Nanami
I didn't say he actually picked up any books but sure I'll roll with your post anyway

"I don't know..." Ella thought about all the subjects, but she didn't know what any of them even meant, "Can we start with the easiest one? Help me ease into things that way? I only just discovered that magic is even possible... it's all too new to me." She said embarrassed.

She delicately slipped into a chair across from him. She could at least say that she liked the atmosphere. The school was quiet and refined. It was the kind of life she used to dream about; being surrounded by books like in a palace of a king's.

Itchigotchi
And I meant it as offering to help since he was listing everything rather than have Ella just stand there. Sorry about that!

Averill nodded, pulling a new looking purple book forwards.
"Merlins Greatest Hits: A summary of important magical events" He read out the title. It looked to be like one of those 'for dummies' type books. Easy fonts, modern layout, nothing like the tomes of intricate text that comprised most of the Merlin and history collection.
"This shouldn't be too hard- I didn't grow up around much magic either, and this reads a lot more like a history book or folk tales."He explained, turning the book to face her and pushing it across the table.

"Were you really totally unaware that magic existed before you came here, though?" He inquired with his hand still on the book, leaning forwards, fascinated. Just because Dwarves didn't delve into magic much didn't mean they were ignorant of it. It was like knowing that public transport existed but never personally using it.

A summary of important events? Sounded perfect to Ella! She was ready to being studying, but Averill began to question her. She stuttered a bit, seeming herself strange again, "Well...no, I didn't. When I received the letter to this school I was in shock... Naomi put it as, living with the mundane, or something like that."

Ella twiddled her fingers, nervous about her answer and her past. She began to recall the events; receiving the letter, showing it to her mother...then she remembered, and slightly jolted, "Oh, that's right! I'm half elf, my mother told me. My father ran away before I was born, but I guess he was an elf?" It sounded strange to her to say aloud for the first time. What even were elves? Were they like the Santa's helpers she was told about in her childhood?

Averill nodded when Ella explained her shock.
"I guess I can relate to that- You don't exactly expect to be a wizard when your parents and everyone around you doesn't do magic." He took his hand off her book and took the glossary from the pile, dragging it in front of himself.

He laughed a little, opening the textbook and digging around in his bag for his notebook. "Funny, huh! I have a similar situation, I guess- my mum was human, but she left the undermountain when I was young." He didn't necessarily avoid her eyes, but he decided it might be more comfortable for both of them if he had a book as well.
"So, I'm half human, I guess? He offered, then realized that if she didn't know much of elves, she might not know of dwarves either.
"Or, half dwarf, depending on where you stand." He looked up again and grinned.

A Dwarf? Ella couldn't believe there was even more races, but at the same time knew she should ahve expected it having come into a new world and all. But, at least she felt Averill and her shared something important in common, being raised by only one parent. It made her smile a little, knowing she had made a dear friend so early on. She felt she could trust Averill.

She wanted to know more about dwarves and elves, but figured that could probably take a while and would maybe seem like prying. Not knowing anything about the cultures also made her fear about being racist on accident. She decided to save it for later, "So, where should we begin? Shall I read this on my own and you can prepare the next section? Oh...and thanks again, for the help. I mean. I think I would have run away by now if not for your hospitality."

Itchigotchi
I doubt it smile Ella and Averill are the same age, Ella's mother would be pregnant. Also, Ella's mother basically loathes magic types since Ella's father ditched her because of the shame he would bring upon elven people. She raised Ella by herself after that, so she wouldn't have time to run off with a second family.

Averill was somewhat glad Ella smiled back. She seemed to get so antsy when her history in the mundane world was brought up. She was obviously uncomfortable enough now to change the subject- but at least she didn't look like she was about to take off like a scared rabbit.

"Oh, yeah, I suppose you can read it and I'll ...quiz...you?" The dwarf boy wasn't entirely new to studying, but he wasn't usually one to simply absorb knowledge through reading- he had to put it to practice.
He waved off the thanks "Its no problem helping- I'm just glad theres someone I can study with in my year!"
He lowered his voice a little, looking down at the glossary book and copying out a few words."Studying with Naomi just doesn't work- she already thinks she knows everything, and can't understand why I wouldn't. Plus shes a few years above us. So she kinda does know all this already and I think it probably bores her."

He suddenly grinned and sat bolt upright.
"Oh Thor!" He exclaimed, and a resounding shushing noise seemed to echo from nowhere in particular. He lowered his voice again.
"We should totally make a study group! There's these two other first years I hang out with sometimes in the other houses. Ones called Vivian and shes a Tomas, and the other one is Muna and he's like, a mute elf or something. You'd totally get along with them, I bet!"

Rin Nanami
Well yeah, agewise it doesn't work. But if I was a conspiracy theorist...

"That's a wonderful idea!" Ella blurted, then blushed and hushed back down, "I mean, the more the merrier. It would be great to meet some more of the first years." Ella believed it would help her feel more comfortable, perhaps they grew up in mundane lives as well? Perhaps more friends meant more protection from this new, intimidating world of magic? She didn't really know, but she did like the idea.

When Averill described Naomi, it didn't surprise Ella. Even in the mundane world that's how the older students acted, especially the seniors. At least that was the same, and it was something that never really bothered her. She would merely stick to her own business and they to theirs. She never wanted to cause trouble. "I'll get to reading then," She went back to the situation at hand and began looking through the magic book of events. Her eyes skipped across the pages in a flurry, every word a sight word, easily molding into her mind.

Averill nodded and made a mental note to contact the other firstyears.
While Ella was studying, he dug around in his bag for the parcel that had almost been dropped on his foot as they left the dorms, and unwrapped it.
Inside was a note from his father, and a lump of ore with a hairclip attached to the back of it.

Averill groaned and melted down onto the table, eyes trained on the note.
He groaned again and put his face down so it pressed into the cool wood.
"Errrrgh..." He grumbled, voice muffled, blonde hair flipping over.
"Naomi's going to kill me...." He mumbled, then lifted his head again, pushing his hair back.

"Ella, I am quite sorry. I know I said I would help you out but one of my cousins just got engaged and she's getting married this weekend." He huffed and stared into the distance for a second, thinking about the annoying suit he might have to wear.
Or the even more annoying traditional dwarven wedding armor.
"So anyway, I have to head back to my undermountain post-haste, and probably should not spend time studying in the library." He frowned and clipped the lump of goldish ore into his hair, picked up his bag and shuffled out.

"Guh. Some shoddy pyromorphite hairclip is supposed to make it all better..."

Ella's anxieties began to well up in her chest. She was beggining to feel ill at Averill's words. She tried her best to shake them off and put on a half-hearted smile, "N-no, that's ok. I can see why that would be very important." Ella began to doubt her bravery of being with another person. She was much better off as a loner after all.

"I'll just check out these books and study in my room. I have little time left to catch up. Hopefully, I can see you again in the future." Her voice stuttered and became very quiet as she spoke. She could feel a break-down welling up to explode at any minute. She stood up and collected the books, her hands shaking and becoming very dry.
