As you step in, a smell wafts past your nose. You smell.. breakfast? Lunch? Dinner? The cooks are hard at work. Depending on the time of day you may smell French toast, pancakes, hamburgers, steak, or any number of dishes in between. One student has sworn that they smelled a horse once, but since nobody is sure how horse meat smells that rumor was dismissed.
There are four long tables - one for each house. Each table is decorated with tablecloths in the color of the respective houses. There is another table off to the side reserved for staff, and a lavish table reserved for teachers and Headmaster Soulstone. On one side, students can go down a line to receive their lunch from the kitchen.
Above you, fire without candles float, providing you with light. The ceiling reads the mood of the room and reflects it with ease. On some days, sunlight streams in from no windows. On other days, everyone has to deal with a bit of a drizzle as they shield their food. There has only been a thunderstorm in the dining hall once in recorded history, and it is unlikely that it will happen again.
Welcome to the Dining Hall!

Naomi swung into the empty room; it seemed she was either early or late, but according to her watch she was early. Fine by her. The chefs had prepared lamb shanks for lunch today, something Naomi was very comfortable with. She claimed a seat at the Ekaterina bench, retrieved a plate, and sat down alone.
"How boring," she mumbled, slicing into the shank with fork and knife. True, she was early, but why was lunch always so damn boring?
A small ring in hand and without warning, Ari suddenly poofed into the dining hall. There was smears of dirt on her skin and her dress, and for the most part she looked worse for wear; save for her hair, which oddly retained it's impeccable shape.
The fourth year Lucian was humming a tune under her breath, and she looked around the cafeteria before spotting Naomi. Grinning, Ari skipped over to her. "Honey, I'm home~"She sang. ▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴ Mage ♤ ┆ ♠Wind

Naomi jerked in her seat and nearly stabbed her throat with her fork. Ripping the eating utensil out of her mouth, she coughed for several moments before managing to knock the lamb into the right tube. "Don't sneak up on me like that!" she snapped, wiping her mouth.
Looking up and blinking a few times, Naomi managed to confirm for herself that yes, indeed, Ari was standing in front of her, albeit more roughed up than usual. "Where have you been?" she demanded, wiping her mouth. "Why are you all dirty? Did you kill someone again? Did they hurt you?" No, knowing Ari, she probably wasn't hurt, and those stains on her dress... well, Naomi was pretty sure they didn't belong to Ari. Ari didn't bleed easily.
Ari's laughter was warm but mischievous, and she raised her hand to point in the direction of Naomi's face. "Oh man, that was better than I thought it would be. Nobody is here, right?"
Ari's eyes scanned the dining hall, giving a satisfied smile when she realized that nobody was around. Good, she didn't feel like forcing the helpless act at the moment. Especially after all the rough-housing she had just gone through. Her knuckles were just slightly bruising, but other than the dirt on her and her swelling cheek Ariadne looked perfectly fine. "Ah, this ring transported me to another dimension."She snickered at Naomi's accusations, leaning back against the table. When she lifted her hand from the yellow tablecloth the spot underneath it was a slightly duller shade than the rest of the table.
"Gosh, Naomi, killing people is a lot more complicated than you make it out to be you know? I'm not some mindless murderer~" Ari pushed her tongue into her cheek, running it along her teeth to make sure there were no gaps. Nope, she was good. "M'fine, didn't lose anything important. This thing is gonna swell like a goddamn b***h though, what a bother."Ari tsk'ed in annoyance, brows furrowing and eyes darkening.
She seemed to mull over that before her face suddenly brightened and she smiled brightly at Naomi. Her voice, which had lowered a bit, rose up to the girly pitch she usually adopted. "Dontcha feel special, Nao, I came to see you before I even took a shower~!" ▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴ Mage ♤ ┆ ♠Wind

A blush rose to Naomi's cheeks, but she quickly banished it. At least Ari was alright, and that was what was important. "I'm early as usual," she said by way of reply. "Another dimension? If going there and getting out was as easy as taking the ring on and off, why didn't you come back sooner? You scared the crap out of me."
Naomi narrowed her eyes. Ari had dodged her question. But if she didn't want to talk about it, well, Naomi wasn't going to push, not with Ari. Dodging it answered it, anyway. "Do you need first aid? Maybe you should sneak into the Janus dorms and steal some of their med supplies. You hate visiting the nurse's, right?" Well, that probably wasn't far from the truth. Everyone seemed to hate going to the nurses. No wonder the healing class learned Aura so early.
Hmm... a shower? Ari sure as hell didn't look like it with her beat-up dress, but if she was telling the truth (which Naomi still wasn't totally sure about) it would make sense if she showered but had nothing else to wear. She stood, leaned over, and sniffed Ari's hair. "Mmm... you did." She smiled briefly, and then glanced at the table over the tiny girl's head. Strange, there was a faint handprint. Ordinarily it wouldn't draw her attention, but with the strange happenings in the forest and all the taint research that Sylvia had been doing... well, it stuck in the back of Naomi's mind. She made a note to check it later. "Have you eaten since I saw you? The chefs are serving lamb shanks today. Not spicy, but you can probably ask them to spice it up for you."
Ari shrugged. "I felt like getting away for a while,"She admit. Ari easily accumulated stress, and she only had a limited number of ways to get rid of it."Besides, I thought the message came across to you that I was fine?" Ari blinked a little in confusion. She didn't look apologetic at all, for the most part -- Lucians weren't exactly the type to be inclined to. Also, it was fun to make Naomi worry. Not that Ari was planning on saying that to Naomi's face. She wasn't stupid.
Ari actually hadn't killed anyone, but years spent with gossip circling her made her too lazy to answer Naomi properly and gave her the tendency to dodge questions. Ari wasn't exactly the killer type in the first place -- too much work. "If anyone catches me, it'll be a bother to answer their questions," Ari dismissed with a sleepy sigh. "Also, it would be bad if I relied too much on magic for healing wounds. It would waste my training for my body to be self reliant, you know?"Plus, she was too lazy.
Ari laughed a little as Naomi sniffed her hair; she had meant the statement as a joke, but it was cute to see that Naomi still took some of the things she said seriously. She actually had formulated a plan on approaching Naomi when she was actually clean, but Ari had ended up in the Dining hall unexpectedly.
Ari squinted at Naomi's question. Since when did she ever eat properly? "Um, I had a pack of Phoenix Tongue?" It had been her last pack, too. She really needed to get some more. ▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴ Mage ♤ ┆ ♠Wind

Getting away for a while? Naomi couldn't fault her for that. Merlin's campus, despite being so big, could be stifling at times. "The message came through, but that didn't mean I wasn't worried," she grumped. "You were so busy you had to tell someone else instead of telling me in person? That's not fair, Ari." Probably, she hadn't been busy at all. Naomi was used to this sort of abuse though, so at this point she was just whining to whine.
Naomi didn't actually care if Ari had killed anyone or not; gods knew she had enough dirt on her hands to last a lifetime. But honestly, murder would be such a hassle to straighten out, it was such a tricky, complicated thing. "I never said anything about magic, you dummy. I mean bandages. Antiseptics. Mundane-y things." Naomi disliked relying entirely on magic herself, and at this point she knew most of her injuries could be at least brushed over with some hydrogen peroxide and a clean bandage.
"...do you ever eat anything else?" Naomi sighed. Why would she expect anything different. "If your surprise appearance is the only thing that's going to make me swallow my fork, I'm going to assume it's safe to continue my lunch." She sat back down again and resumed eating. "Are you going to stick around this time, or just disappear without warning again?" she asked between bites, bracing herself for the latter answer.
"Awww, I'm so honored to have the great Naomi worry about lil 'ol me." Ari cooed, eyelashes fluttering as she gave an amused grin. She knew that Naomi was probably just spinning her wheels for the sake of it. The third year wasn't a very honest girl in some ways.
"Laaaaazy!" Ari sang. Dressing her wounds took too long, and she could just wash them out in the shower anyways. Not to mention she didn't have the energy to do anything like sneaking into a commonrooms at the moment. It didn't show very well, but Ari was struggling a little to stay up on her feet.
"Enjoy it~" She hummed. Naomi's words made her grin, and Ari leaned in to whisper in the girl's ear as she ate. "Hmm, maybe if it was Naomi that looked at me with cute upturned eyes and asked me to stay, I would?"
Ari straightened up immediately, laughing brightly. "Just kidding~! Like that would be possible. The Family shouldn't be calling me this week, but I've got a lot of classes to catch up on~ " Ari tapped her chin. "Well, I should probably go take a shower." ▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴▿▴ Mage ♤ ┆ ♠Wind

Naomi flushed a little. "Don't be silly, I'm only worrying because it's you," she muttered. Honestly, the older girl took her for granted sometimes. How mean. "You really should take care of yourself, but I can't really force you into anything you don't want to do," she added. Judging by the fact that Ari's legs were looking mighty shaky, Naomi was pretty sure that she was in way worse condition than she was letting on, but it wasn't like Ari was one to ask for help or admit weakness when it didn't suit her. "And I don't do the whole upturned eyes thing these days. You know that."
After a moment's consideration (and glancing around to ensure for the thousandth time that nobody was around), Naomi stood up and gave Ari a short kiss on the cheek. "Go shower and catch up on your classes, and maybe I'll do that again later," she said, offering a little smile. "Plus there might be a trip down to the Catacombs at the end of the week to look forward to. It's high time to bring the first years down there anyway."

⊰aerykah - sampson⊱ Aerykah had a plan.
How did she let it get to the end of the year without doing something like this?
Regardless of that fact, she had a plan in mind, and now all she needed was people. It was around lunchtime, maybe there would be people in the Dining Halls? It was rare that she would ask for help from people, for this sort of thing, from outside her House, but she decided it was about time to get Gage and Din retired from helping her out with her pranks.
In the back of Aery's mind, she wondered if maybe getting back into this hobby would help her start to get over what happened during the past few months. Being House Rep, her house reputation could be on the line... but at this point, who really cared?
Excitedly bursting into the Dining Hall, Aery glanced around, hoping people would be there.

Averill Hammershod
Averill was sitting in the dining hall, down the end of the yellow-clad Ekaterina table. He was staring avidly at his bowl of soup.
"Mend--" He poked it with his wand, hoping that the spell would help fix the flavour. The soup wobbled a little bit, and the bowl looked extra smooth. That probably wasn't how mend worked. "Unlock?" He flicked his wand at it again, wondering if he could unlock the flavours. The soup rippled a bit, and turned dark brown. It seemed that he'd unlocked the tannins from the vegetables. "...huh." He remarked, and swirled it with a spoon, writing a note in a book next to him.
The dining hall had been a sortof overcast grey for most of lunchtime, (which suited Averills mood nicely) but a beam of excited sunlight flickered through when Aerykah burst into the room. Averill looked up at the non-roof, then over his shoulder towards the spotlight-like sunbeam. He waved and gave Aerykah a smile.
The soup was just the first bad choice of the day.

⊰aerykah - sampson⊱ Catching notice in passing at how bright her debut into the room was, she grinned. Aerykah hadn't felt this lively in months. Maybe all it took was concocting her largest incident of the year.
She saw Averill from across the room, and waved at him in return, running over to the Ekaterina table excitedly. "Averill! Hey!" she almost shouted, before realizing she was indoors. "Hey, how are you? ... That's some weird looking soup." she noticed, glancing in his dish and chuckling a little to herself.
"You up to anything today? I could use some help with something, if you're interested."

Averill Hammershod
Averill glanced down at his soup, which was still just as unappetizing as ever. "Er, yeah. I was just practising, I guess.." He didn't try to explain why it looked so awful, and closed the notebook next to the bowl. He'd already given up on eating it when the first spell didn't work.
"I'm not doing anything but homework today, " He realized how boring that sounded, and since the teachers hadn't put up any errands in a while, he was feeling charitable "but if you need help, it'd be my pleasure to assist." As he said the last few words he pulled a bit of a face. Was that a sleazy thing to say? His eyes flicked away from Aerykah as he tried to backpedal slightly "I mean, uh, yeah, sure I can help you!" He added a winning smile for extra un-creepy sincerity.
"Uh.... what is it that you need help with, exactly?' Averill blinked, remembering that her house was known to do some slightly devious things in their spare time.
