 As you walk in, you can see immediately that your dorm reflects most of the school's opinion back at you. Although the common room is furnished with comfortable blue furniture, a couple of the walls are cracked with some hasty spells trying to cover it up. You have less firewood than the other houses in stock, but that's alright because Tomas are resourceful. If worse comes to worse they can always burn the ugly paintings on the walls.
The furniture looks comfortable enough, but it's... sort of defective. On occasion the pillows have been known to spontaneously transform into cinder blocks, and sometimes the couch moves because someone sits on it just the wrong way. One of the chairs hates being sat on and will scurry away if you try to go near it. The bookshelf by the staircase leading to the dorms is probably the only non-jinxed piece of furniture in the room, and it's filled with romance novels and how-to books.
Unlike the other houses, however, the Tomas Commons often has a guest. There is a small white cat that can usually be found curled up on a chair, on the table, or by the fireplace in the winter months. The staff has realized this and there is a small cabinet of cat treats, catnip and cat toys in the corner of the room.
A few paintings are scattered on the walls. The frames are a bit scratched up, and some of the paintings are faded, but the paintings themselves remain as cheery as ever towards the students... well, the friendly ones anyway. Some of them give the students dirty looks as they walk in. There is but a single fresh, clean painting up on the walls: a painting of the school's crest, a bear prepared to attack.
Upstairs, like the rest of the houses, is split in half: boy's room on one side, girl's room on the other. (Non-binaries can sleep wherever.) They both have the same bunk beds, the same woolly blue blankets and sheets, and the same comfy pillows that occasionally drool during the night. Possibly the only difference is the mirror in the girls' dorm that compliments those that walk past it.
However, the Tomas Commons and Dorms hide a secret. A secret nobody in the school would expect because the Tomas are the ordinary...

The Tomas dorms are currently in fiery ruins. It's not advised to enter at this moment, as someone's abnormally large hair dye collection has mixed with the flames and created toxic fumes.

Headphones in, and world out. That was Aerkyah's unpacking motto. This was her third year here at the Academy, and by now she had grown familiar with the back-to-school rituals of unpacking all of her belongings. And claiming bathroom space for her massive amount of hair dye. The first years would have to get used to it. She always found it amusing watching them trying to sit down on the furniture, or wake up on their first morning of classes to wet willies in their ears.
It wasn't like she hadn't been initiated to the Tomas dorms - she just preferred not to dwell on those memories. This year though, it seemed weird. She was the first one in the dorms and that had never happened in her years of being here. She frankly enjoyed being able to play with the cat and be able to choose her own bed without having to fight with the others. She always ended up with a top bunk and this year would be different.
Humming the tune of her music to herself, she lay back on her bed, both anticipating the arrival of another Tomas student, and enjoying the silence that the dorm rarely had.

Stony faced and grinding what appeared to be a smoking cinnamon stick in his mouth Gage entered the dorms, dragging three bags along with him. He appeared to be in a sour mood, eyebrows furrowed and face in a rather intimidating scowl. His pace was fast, feet thumping against the staircase as he made his way to the boy's bunking room. Tossing all of his luggage on the bottom bunk closest to the door, Gage quickly sped back down to the common room.
Gage was in a good mood. He was so excited that his face had tensed into a rather terrifying expression.
"Cat," Gage whispered quietly to himself upon spotting the dorm's pet cat curled up in a chair. He simply stood there for a long moment, watching the feline sleep on the sofa. Boarding school life was indeed bliss.

Vivan pulled her suitcase along the path with her nose in her campus map. Wow, the campus was really big! She wondered if she would really get to see all of it. But for now, all she wanted to do was find her way to the dorms. She'd heard the Tomas were really nice and she hoped she'd be given a warm welcome. And she'd heard rumors about them having a cat! And she'd heard-
And then Vivian walked into a door. "Ow," she whined, rubbing her nose. But this looked like the place, so she jiggled open the doorknob and peered inside. "Hello? Are these the Tomas Dorms?"

⊰ａｅｒｙｋａｈ - ｓａｍｐｓｏｎ⊱After dozing off a little bit, Aerykah heard the thump of footsteps... and the door? Downstairs in the commonroom. Wiping her eyes of any of the sleep that may have gotten in them, she stumbled down the stairs to meet whoever arrived - and to her surprise there was two people! She recognized Gage from years spent in classes together. He seemed the rough-em-up type, from outward appearance and she hadn't honestly gotten to know him that well.
However... that girl. 'She has to be a first year... She looks so lost, and that map.' Aerykah thought, glancing her way and put on a fake-looking smile.
"Hey, welcome to the Tomas dorms. My name's Aerykah - and you must be a first year, carrying around that map... and walking into doors like an idio-" Cutting herself off before finishing her sentence, she just turned and gestured inwards.
This was way too much work.

Gage looked up, broken from his cat-induced stupor. He was a little surprised to find that he hadn't been the first one in, and also a little disappointed. Neither of these emotions registered on his face save for his eyebrows furrowing slightly, and for the most part he just looked annoyed.
He didn't know who the girl was with the map, but the one with dyed bangs looked familiar. Gage remembered having her in a lot of classes, and that her name was a really fancy spelling for 'Erika'. He wasn't sure whether they had even spoken to eachother before. Gage glanced at her, nodding in acknowledgement. It wasn't like there was anything left to say now that Aerykah had welcomed the new girl.
"Name?" Gage asked after a moment, unsure of how else he was supposed to contribute to the conversation. He reached over to pick the cat up from the sofa, but the cool metal of his fingertips made the feline flinch and slip off the seat. Feeling a bit dejected but looking like it hadn't even bothered him, he gave up and took a seat.

Vivian laughed nervously. For a second there she was sure the girl with the pretty bangs was going to call her an idiot. But clearly she hadn't finished the word, so it was okay. "Hi Aerykah!" Vivian said brightly. Then she noticed the boy with the strange arms. "And hello...umm...other person," she said awkwardly. "I'm Vivian Summers, a first year. I guess we're all housemates!"
The cat wandered over to Vivian and rubbed against her legs, purring. "Aww, hello," Vivian cooed. "You're really cute." She stepped in further and closed the door behind her, then she looked towards the boy with the strange arms. "What's your name?"

I knew it. First year. Maybe Gage can help me 'initiate' her... Trying to avoid showing a smirk, Aerkyah glanced over towards him. Watching the cat flinch and walk away from the metal, she bit her lip. He really looked interested in the house 'pet'. His arms looked pretty damn cool too. She had noticed them in one of her first-year classes, but never found out what had happened.
Nodding at Vivian, she plastered on that 'welcoming' smile again. "Yep. S'pose we are. Girls dorms are up there, and if you want to sleep with that guy, the guys dorms are over there. The pillows drool, and the furniture runs away." She added the last part quickly, purposefully fumbling her words.
It wasn't her fault that the girls in Tomas had a tendency to prank (of course, lovingly), the first years. It usually helped bonding, watching things get mixed up, or toothpaste be charmed into dying someone's tongue. Things like that were harmless, and by the end, everyone in the dorm was typically laughing. In her first year, her hair dye got charmed and glowed for a week, her bed got short-sheeted, and the girls moved her bed to the middle of the guy's dorms one night. She enjoyed every second of it.
"That cat has been here for... well, who knows how long. He's a cutie though, and loves to cuddle."

Gage perked up in slight interest at the mention of Vivian being a first year. He would never get tired of seeing newbies try to get used to the common rooms. It was amusing to watch.
Gage looked slightly betrayed at Aerykah's comment about the new girl sleeping with him. Blasphemy! The beds were small enough without having to share them with somebody. There was no way two people could fit comfortably in a bunk, especially with the nasty habits the pillows sometimes had. (Eventually you just got used to waking up with flaky residue on your cheek.)
If there was a second meaning to what Aerykah had meant, it completely flew over Gage's head.
"Gage Rosequartz. Third." Gage gave another slight tilt of his head in what was probably a greeting, eyes sliding down to focus silently on the cat. "The cat doesn't have a name."He added in after a moment. "Everyone has their own personal name for it, so just call it whatever you want." Gage had heard it called everything from 'Marshmallow' to 'Armageddon'.

Vivian flushed pink. "I think I'll stick to the girl's dorms," she said. "Wow, the dorms sound... interesting." Pillows that could drool? Furniture that ran away? Sounded like the Tomas dorms were more troublesome than she'd expected. But it was neat! Who'd ever heard of a pillow that drooled?
Vivian knelt down and gave the cat a good scratch behind the ears. It purred. "I think I'll call you Feathers," she decided aloud. Then she stood up straight. "Well, I'll be right back. Have to pick a bed, right?" she said, smiling. She pulled her suitcase up the stairs and picked a bunk near the door. "Hello Mr. Pillow!" she said brightly, giving it a pat. She pushed her suitcase next to the ladder to remind her to unpack later, then came back downstairs.

Catching Gage's look from the corner of her eye, Aerykah merely winked at him. She wasn't being serious, of course. There's no reason to get involved with romance, it only lead to stupidity and someone getting hurt.
Listening to his cat name comment, she laughed. "I usually just call it Elixir... I've always wanted to name a cat that." she admitted, though she wasn't overly sure why. "If he hears people crying, he'll go cuddle with them."
Vivian's reply though, got her laughing harder. Oh this one is gonna be in for a treat. Aerykah thought, trying to also come up with a reply for her laughter. "Well, they certainly are. Never a dull moment around here. Such a shame nobody else is here yet though, seriously."
Nodding as Vivian ran upstairs, kind of hoping that she wouldn't choose the bunk with her, she turned her attention to Gage. "So, what path are you starting on this year, Gage?" Aerykah asked him, tilting her head casually.

  Second year had rolled around for Din and things were starting to become familiar. The little dwarf didn't think twice about directions as ey wound up the path towards the Tomas dorms carrying eir proportionately small suitcase. It took a little jangling to get past the door (which was usually a little bit of a hassle for Din. Not much in the school was built for an individual of Din's stature), almost as if it was bumped a little out of alignment. Odd, Din mused as ey bustled in.
"Hello?" Upon entering, the first person Din noticed was Gage, probably because not only was he a good few inches taller than the other occupants of the room, but a full two feet taller then Din emself. Din had gained a close friendship to the 3rd year after dorming with him for a year. Which reminded Din; "Gage, I'm with you in the boy's dorms again this year." Din was in the rare position where ey could chose eir dorm (or the only other option was to sleep on the often squirming couch) and felt it important to let people know where ey was sleeping. Ey spent the last year in the boy's dorm and was doing the same this year unless something were to convince em to move to the girl's dorm.
Din set eir bag down and looked up at the other occupants of the room. One was another 3rd year that Din recognised, though Din couldn't quite remember her name. Airy? Areka?. Din, in general, remembered names with one syllable way more easily than multiple syllable names. Din couldn't remember the third person, she was probably a first year. Well, Din needed an introduction then. "I'm Din," the little dwarf said. Not much of an introduction, but a start nonetheless.

So it had been a joke. Well, that was a relief in itself. Gage was unsure on what he would do if Vivian took it seriously. Her reaction had been a little strange, but the third year guessed being in a bed with a guy was pretty embarrassing. Besides, she seemed a bit awkward around him. Gage was used to that kind of reaction by now, though.
Aerykah's friendliness came as a bit of a surprise. She had seemed like the type to treat others with disdain. Gage blinked a little as he was suddenly addressed, face schooled into it's regular expression of blankness. "Oh. Alchemy." Gage tilted his head as well, mirroring the third year girl. "You?"
The strange sounds coming from the other side of the door made Gage whip his head around with surprising force. He glared at it for a few seconds until Din entered. Expression immediately softening, Gage nodded to them. He had been wondering when the second year would be getting there."Din." He greeted.
After a moment, Gage squinted. "Did you eat."

Vivian looked around as the door was pushed open yet again. For a split second she couldn't see anyone, and then she looked down and... a short person stood in the doorway. For a moment she wasn't quite sure if the person was a boy or a girl, but then they said something about bunking with Gage in the boy's dorm. Did that mean they were a boy? But why did they have to announce they were sleeping in the boy's dorm if they were a boy? Wasn't that obvious already.
Vivian blinked to clear her head of this train of thought. Her head was starting to hurt. Maybe the person would tell her up front. He was talking to her anyway. Vivian cleared her throat and said, "Hello! I'm Vivian. I'm new this year."
