BOOK #1

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak
"It is 1939. Nazi Germany. The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier, and will become busier still.

Liesel Meminger is a foster girl living outside of Munich, who scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement."

We began reading on 1 January 1014.
I know I said I'd post a proposed reading schedule a few weeks ago, but with the holidays and my birthday, I just haven't had time! We're beginning with the introduction and the first chapter in part one, which should be finished by 8 January. Please feel free to begin discussing as soon as you're finished with this week's reading. I promise to have a proposed schedule up in the next couple of days!

►►So, I'm curious what everyone knows of the book?
(I've read 2 chapters eight months back... so I'll avoid sharing anything specific)

★★☆

I've read part of the first chapter, but not enough to really know much about it.
I've heard that it's supposed to be very powerfully written though, and I'm very interested to get into it.

Also, if anyone wants a free PDF version instead of buying a hard/kindle/nook copy, I found a link.

►►I know its narrated by Death during the holocaust... so you can imagine... I don't remember much from the first two chapters aside from having to put it down a couple times because the imagery was just too difficult. This is a perfect book to read as a chapter-at-a-time. I'd like to be able to ponder what I had read, and not read too much all at once. ◄◄

Whats the schedule look like? because I can read the whole thing in one sitting if I needed to. I tend to do better that way. sweatdrop (I always used to read ahead when I was in school).

The plan is to read just a few chapters a week so that people without a lot of extra reading time can still participate. I always read ahead in school too, but unfortunately I rarely have the time to read a full book in one sitting any more.
You're more than welcome to read it however works best for you, but we'll only be discussing a few chapters at a time.
