Did life change much afterwards? Were you able to return to your "normal" life as before, or were things really awkward for a while?
I haven't opened up to anyone yet, as I fear what others might think of me. I'm sure my parents have suspicions, as they've found my stash of makeup/other girly things on many occasions.
It's hard to tell someone though. I don't want to leave my comfortable haven of solitude, but it's lonely here, and I can't stay here forever.
I'm moving out soon though, and getting my own place. Should I wait until then, so my family and I can have space?
Another thing I'm concerned about is the girl I like. I know she likes me, and she knows I like her. (The reason we aren't dating is because she lives over a thousand miles away). I fear what she might think if I came out as trans. Would she still like me? Would she like me, but refuse to be in a relationship? It's scary.
Sorry if I'm asking so many questions. It's not an easy thing.

I'd like to say it doesn't but it does.
have to be prepared to let everything and everyone go and start over worst case.

be prepared to loose everything, if you know someone who is very accepting confide in them first
