..♠..

Yeah, pretty simple question here I guess, but I'm kind of curious. Do you enjoy writing in first person or third person more? (Or alternatively, do you take a third option and like to write mainly in second person?) And by extension, do you enjoy reading stories/books/novels written in first or third person more?

I myself prefer to read and write in third person. I'm not particularly sure why; I just do. I do find it hard to put myself in the shoes of my main characters, though, as I do with most main characters in various media. Thus I prefer to forgo the difficulty and write stories as an observer. Since my stories also have an issue of being a bit on the larger end of the scale, it also allows me to transition my third person limited POV from one character to another with minimal confusion.

Unfortunately for me, most of the books and such I end up reading are written in first person. It's not really that I don't like first person, it's just not as enjoyable for me to read. I prefer imagining things like a movie in my head rather than through the eyes of an actual person, not to mention that first person is just so easy to do wrong and I've read and written so many bad, bad, bad stories in first that I like to avoid it nowadays. Not possible, really, though, given that most published stories in the YA section (which I prefer to any other category, unfortunately for my career in English classes...) are written in first person.

I prefer to read first person but writing depends. I like to get into the character's heads and know what they're thinking and their emotions and first person really captures that. However writing it is a different story because sometimes when I write in first person my mind and the character's mind become one and that makes it so I'm not telling the story through their eyes but rather my own (which is not something I would like to do) . However when I get it right, writing in first person is fun.

In my opinion I love both but when done right first person is usually the top pick for me.

Oh, third person undoubtedly.
......The way I see it, words are alive. They have personality...a point of view, and the point of view always has a drastic effect on novels. Things written in first person for instance, give insight on the characters’ personal thoughts while those written in third person provide an overall view of the situation, giving the reader a sense of omnipotence. As one of my all time favorite intellegent psycopaths so eloquently stated, "If you cannot beat God, become Him", and third person writing does just that.

......When writing stories, I prefer using a third person point of view to give the reader all of the pieces of the puzzle, and a glimpse of the big picture, making it easy--generally in retrospect--to see how they would fit together in the end. You can introduce many characters throughout the story, each one playing a role in setting the stage for the main events to occur. Since it's written in third person, it becomes easy to see how each individual character contributes to the final unveiling of the story.

......Things written with a first person point of view, while it gives the reader a more personal perspective on what the character experiences as it hones in on the characters’ emotion and thoughts throughout the novel, results in an extremely limited and one-sided perspective. When reading, I must be allowed to see through the eyes of several of different characters, thus expanding beyond the usual limitation of first person, or else not read it at all.

No matter what POV a story is written in; however, good grammar always helps. *cough, cough* Hunger Games *cough, cough*

For writing, I've found it's easier for me to write third person. I like the fact that I can give detail on every character's thoughts or personality, and stories I write in 3rd tend to go farther. But I try not to reveal everything at the beginning, leave some things to mystery for the reader to dwell on.
I read both 1st and 3rd. I usually prefer 1st because you sometimes have to make your own personality for a character that wasn't described much. I like how you learn everything from one person's point of view, but then are able to figure out why the secondary characters play roles in the main character's life.

I hadn't read any posts 'til after I wrote this. The whole time I was thinking about The Hunger Games because I love how Suzanne Collins could be in Katniss' mind, yet there were still things left to mystery. You couldn't "read Katniss like a book" (pun intended) even though you followed her through everything. I applaud Collins for being able to not only do that, but also let the other characters be described so you thought you knew everything about them. But really, there were secrets never to be known, things you tried so hard to find out, but there was no major clue until Katniss said something about them.
That's why I don't write 1st person. I end up giving too much information on the main character and leave the secondary characters in the shadows. I'm not able to make you actually feel like you are in the main character's shoes.

Gosh, I really have to stop rambling so much... sweatdrop

I like writing in both really. It's...kinda weird. One story has to be in first while the other have to be in third. Some can be whatever. I guess it all depends on who the story revolves around...

......I'm sorry dear, but that's not what I meant at all. If you PM me I'd love to explain it to you.

I understand you were talking about grammar. I was more giving an example to my post and why I prefer 3rd person. The fact that I was thinking about The Hunger Games then saw your post is what kept me talking. That also leads to why I said I need to stop rambling. I read something, or a thought goes through my mind, and I end up going on for a while...

You know a lot of my favorite stories, I only remember that they were in third person because they switched from one character to another. I think if you do a good job writing, third person can feel just like 1st person, because it sucks you in. I don't really think 1st person is that bad actually, but I do think it takes skill because if you want to hint at things, or want the audience to realize something before the main character, you have to be really careful about what and how you reveal things. I mean you don't want the main character to come off as being a total idiot.
