I opened an Etsy shop June 20, 2012, a few days after I graduated from college. I've knitted for over half my life and love to make scarves, hats, arm warmers, etc. but rarely wear them as a resident of Southern California. Thus, I had nothing to do with projects I spent days on! My sister suggested that I create an etsy shop and she would contribute items to it as well. After a few months, I decided to add a few of my friendship bracelets since they were quicker to make and easier to photograph.
I soon discovered that my friendship bracelets were far more popular than the items my sister crocheted and I knitted. I started practicing new patterns of weaving/macrame/knotting and really enjoy finishing bracelets.
Now my shop mostly consists of premade bracelets, though I do accept custom bracelet requests. While my sister has branched off and created her own shop.

Oh man, you're telling me. I see other bracelets that people have made using, like, 50 strings. That would take so much effort and time, not to mention patience when all of the strings get tangled around each other. redface

That was the last type of thing I've done with embroidery floss, I've been too busy knitting and crocheting.
How is it, keeping up with your shop? I don't know how much you make in advance to sell but I thought about making an Etsy store and I just don't know if I could make the same hat over and over again if it sold well. On the other hand though, making enough one of a kind things to keep it stocked would be a pain too.

Thanks smile Is THAT how people make the rope-y bracelets? I've seen the friendship bracelet wheel before but I thought it made the same bracelets I make and I didn't want to relearn! I'm going to have to look into the wheel and patterns.
As far as etsy goes, it doesn't take long to make the bracelets I sell. For the first year I was open I made them as they were ordered since it was no big deal. I only started stocking up this past few months so I can focus on school but still have the shop.
I've seen people make hats and just have the one they made in stock, and everything else would be "made to order". You can decide to make another one whenever you feel like it and change that or just ship them out as soon as the order is made. If you find that you have a certain pattern that goes over well, you can make it custom too, where people decide the colors and everything. That way you don't have to make it up beforehand, you can just wait until someone wants one, tell them it'll take a week or two to make annnd charge more ;D haha That's basically what I did. I made up like 3 bracelets and they sold so I made a custom listing.
My shop isn't all that popular so I don't have a problem of daily orders or custom orders daily so I feel pressured.
