Long ago during the Ashikaga Shogunate of the late thirteenth century, the need for samurai grew at an alarming rate in Japan. Thanks to an attack by the Chinese Yuan dynasty, the upper echelon of warriors began to appear so as to protect their homeland. Many traveled the western coast to stop the invaders. Later, during the Sengoku period those former men of honor had become replaced by low class warriors, men who fought and made themselves into the heroes of the people. Of course there were also those who simply called themselves samurai for the respect and perks it gave. Word has been spreading in the Tamba province that the people of their southern neighbor, the Settsu province, has reported sightings of a dangerous criminal heading north. Reports say that any attempt to stop him has resulted in failure and that at one point even caused the destruction of a village. Koiki village sits near the border of Tamba and Settsu. Kioki has recently been host to a pair of extorting samurai. They often harass the villagers and take what they want without payment. No one is brave enough to stand up to them and they are the only people who protect thw village from bandits. Even so a more horrific beast enters the village.
