Here, the basics of battling against gym leaders and batter advancement in pokemon tournaments is taught. Essentials of single and double battles are practiced here.
The final exam is a battle tournament in the school arena, in front of all classes. Students are graded based on progress, effort, strategy, and how far they advance against opposing students and their teachers.
Grumpily, Athena walked into her empty classroom, holding a cup of black tea. Unfortunately for her students, Mrs. Lyon was not in a great mood that morning. The previous night, little Tabitha had been up sick with a high fever and like any good mother would do, she’d ended up staying up with her trying to keep her cool and make sure the medications stayed down. Feraligatr, being the only water type she had on her at the time, had stayed up as well to make sure that the little girl stayed hydrated. Athena’s Meganium had joined them and had attempted to use Heal Pulse, but it only eased the pain. Even Noctowl, had been up to try and sooth the ill child, going into her mind (lightly) and providing to her images of winter, carnivals, ice-type Pokémon, her aunts, anything that could cool her body temperature down or at the very least make her happier in some way. After many hours, the tired Athena Lyon and her three Pokémon managed to bring down Tabby’s fever and get her to go to sleep so that the medications could work. Once her daughter was asleep at long last, they too had passed out.
Alas! Their sleep was not for long! Only three hours later, the alarm woke them up to let them know that she had to get ready for work. With great reluctance and quite grudgingly, she did just that. Now, she wasn’t about to wake up her daughter as she slept in the bed, so Athena and her Feraligatr went down to the Day-Care center and dropped off the sleeping angel. She explained to Kenta what had happened the previous night, and told him to let her know if anything bad happened. Though not the most fond of leaving her daughter after getting so sick, she knew she could trust the redhead to watch out for her and to make sure that he fever stayed down; as an extra precaution, Feraligatr stayed behind to help take care of Tabby. When Azrael and Lillith asked what was wrong, earlier, she was only able to half-way tell them what had happened. And of course, to add insult to injury, they told her that she could’ve gotten one of them to come help, seeing as they both had ice-types and all. She’d just glared in frustration at them; she was unable to explain in her zombie state why that didn’t really occur to her at two in the arceus-awful morning.
So now, she sat there at her desk, enjoying her caffeinated black tea before her students arrived to class. Outside of their Pokeballs, was Noctowl, Lucario, and her Crawdaunt. Mrs. Lyon had originally planned on having Meganium out for her first day of official class, seeing as how diverse his moveset was. Oh well. Noctowl would be fine, even though she’d stayed up with the others, she was technically a nocturnal Pokémon anyways, so she was the only one not under the effects of sleep deprivation.
Then the bell rang, and she groaned. Already, she could hear the sounds of students leaving their classrooms and their footsteps resonated loudly in her ears. She went over to the door and hung up a very large, impossible to miss, sign that clearly said:
Quote:
Class E battle students, please line up to the back of the classroom in a single file line. No talking unless you are addressed by the teacher.
Then, she went to the front of the classroom and went to lean against the wall with her arms crossed. Noctowl perched on a bar above the door, watching as each of the students filed in. Lucario and Crawdaunt stood on opposite sides to their trainer, both eager to start the class much more than their trainer was that morning. Also, behind Athena was a huge poster (impossible to miss) featuring the type match-up chart... This was going to be one of the few days that it was up, because she was going to require of her students that that chart be memorized from top to bottom within two weeks.
Lél couldn't get out of Breeding fast enough. Not just for a smoke break (which he anxiously took) but for the class he was really waiting for: Battle class! This was the main reason why he came to the academy, leaving his beautiful (harsh) Hungary. He came in calm, but his heart pounded. Any louder and it might have shown through his uniform! He forgot about the commotion in breeding, the fuss of the girls, the carelessness of the boys, and the attitude of the teacher. This was the class he'd been waiting for. Except, Tas was in the infirmary. Miksa was his only companion of the day. And a good thing too! Or he would have forgotten his egg too! Being the first one there, he was pleased with himself. Of all his classes, this was the one he memorized.
Iris basically ran to her next class. She was going to handle Jason but the knowledge that her mentor was her teacher made her leave the class without waiting for Vern or the others. She wanted to see Athena first. She really wanted to be the first person in the classroom. She opened the door and was about to greet Athena happily but then she saw three things. The first thing she was on the door. A very big sign that told her to stand in the back of the room in a single file and not to talk unless addressed by the teacher. Once inside, the second thing that Iris saw was Athena's expression. It was not happy or cheery or even in a way that said she had idea to torture her students. It was just a tired face that screamed even more danger than the other faces. Lastly she saw Lel already there in class which was a bummer for her since she really wanted to be first to see Athena her readiness for this class.
Listening to the sign, Iris walked in. She bowed to Athena and made her way to the back of the classroom and stood behind Lel. Damn the guy was taller that she was.
Marco left Breeding class once the bell rung because he would not waste one second to reach one of his favorite classes: Battle Class. Marco grinned, this wasn't just his favorite class, but also his best class. Last year he managed to impress his teachers with his battle skills which were only strengthen by the Team Rocket attack. This year, he was hoping to learn more about battles and become a better trainer. He heard that Miss Lyon would be teaching this class and somehow that excited and scared him. He faced the woman once and it was probably one of the toughest battles he ever had. His Monferno actually managed to survive longer than he expected, but nonetheless the power difference was truly frightening. She didn't hold back and that was what was great about her; she took every battle seriously.
Marco entered the classroom somehow expecting to be the first student there, but to his surprised (or maybe not) Lel was already inside the classroom. He didn't know too much about his new roommate, but it was very clear that he enjoyed pokemon battles. Marco was actually very happy to have someone who would be just as excited about battling as he was. He walked up to Lel and nodded at him knowing he was a man of few words and that a nod would probably be enough for him.
According to the sign he saw when he entered, they would need to line up in the back of classroom. Not wanting to disobey any orders from the dark-haired teacher, Marco walked over to the back of the classroom to line up. Miss Lyon was not looking very well today, in fact she looked right down mad. Marco was somehow expecting her to snap at the first student who spoke to her so he said nothing. Marco looked down at the pokemon egg he was carrying, maybe it would be better if he summoned Infernape so that he could hold the egg and keep it warm at the same time. When he reached the line he finally took notice of Iris who was so small compared to Lel that he actually managed to cover her entire figure. He was actually surprised to see Iris since he didn't see her at first due to Lel's great size. "Iris," he smiled walking so that he was standing behind her in this line, "ready to battle? Because I can't wait to start."

LYDIA CROSS
Lydia hurried into class, panting and exhausted from her run. In preparation for miss Lyon's class, it was probably a better idea to leave her new egg in her dorm room. She knew her dorm-mates well, and mister Jones had said himself that the eggs aren't due to hatch for a while. Until she knew what to expect from her teacher, the egg would be safer in her room; snuggled in the comfort of warm blankets and soft pillows. Lydia was out of breath by the time she got into the class, but at least she wasn't late. That was two for two! Looking up, she saw one of the new guys from her last class there too. A rather tall and thick guy, but she hadn't caught his name yet. Black hair, steel eyes... If she stared any longer, she'd probably start to blush. That would really give Athena something to pick at. She pulled up her three pokeballs, keeping her mind occupied in trying to come up with strategies already. Then there was Iris and Marco. In silence, she followed everyone into the back. Somehow, that wasn't very comforting. The quiet just made her more nervous.
Cheerfully, Vern and his Porygon arrived to the entrance to Battle Class, only to find an unmissable sign posted on the front of the door. "Quiet...? Uh okay..." Doing as instructed, Vern shut his mouth and walked into the door. The last thing he wanted was to piss off Mrs. Lyon, especially after the horror stories that he heard about her from Oli, Iris, and Marco last year!
When Vern walked into class, the first thing he noticed was the type match-up chart posted at the front wall, and their new battle teacher standing there in a very foul mood. His eyes widened, a little scared. "Oh great..." More or less oblivious to the important things in his surroundings, he failed to notice the Noctowl perched above the door, watching their every movements. Vern spotted his intimidating roommate, Lel, Iris, Marco, and Lydia had already arrived, and he gulped. Respectfully, he bowed to Mrs. Lyon and went to stand into the back of the classroom. Hopefully, this class would be over with soon.
Iris turned around as she heard Marco speaking to her once he got in line. As much as she wanted to answer him and talk how excited she was for class and then chance to be taught by her mentor even more, she knew that when Athena said or wrote something down, it was like a law: It was meant to be followed to the "T" No ifs, ands, buts, or excuses about it. Being her student, she remember the punishments and she rather not have Marco go through that; despite it being a real learning experience. Iris turned her body slightly so she could comfortably face Marco and still be able to face the line correct way when needed.
Iris quickly covered Marco's mouth, hoping that Athena didn't hear him speak. She put her finger up to her lips and silently hushed him. She then pointed to the sign about the line and silence. Even as she didn't speak, her eyes said it all. If he spoke once more and the teacher heard him, it would be a** handled to the older woman on a sliver platter.
She would have to ignore the fact she can feel his breath on her hand. His life was more important, than her need to blush.

Tojuro quickly left the breeding class a little later than most since he had to go to his dorm and drop off a few bags so he could make room for his egg as he try'd his best and dash to the class and well, had a few accidents on the way back. He noticed the sign on the door and entered the class to see iris, the flirting man, vern and a few others there.
Which put a smile on his face as he got in line in the back of the class not being able to get close to any one as he dusted his dirtied up clothes. Not even a day of wearing them and he was already covered in dirt. He just let out a sigh as he checked on his egg from time to time. He notice a hole on the knee of his pants on the right leg. He died slightly inside, at this rate he was gonna die, the cause of death, himself most likely.
Tojuro breathing was slightly heavy showing that he was tired. But still as much as he loved to sit down and rest, he had no other choice but to stand and wait. Just like everyone else. He wondered if he pack enough sewing stuff to patch his pants, he also wondered if he had time to make another layer for the surprise, probably not but still he could try at least. After some time he herd a hushing noise and saw iris covering the guy's mouth and he just lightly waved to vern, flirting man and iris before facing the teacher. He was already a mess, he didn't need to get in trouble.

Miyako left the breeding class and went to her dorm to drop off her ugly little egg and made sure her blankets made a comfy home for it. She left it and quickly made her way back and read the note and saw a giant owl on the door and calmly walk in.
She took notice of a few people in here, one of which was iris and just smirk. She quickly got in line by the guy who mouth was closed by iris and simply watch. She opened her mouth ever so gently and whispered with out moving her lips "Iris~. Stop touchin yer boyfriend." Miyako took a inhale before sh continued whispering "You have enough time for that later after class silly~" To avoid being caught she began whistling softly before coughing slightly. She look up at the grumpy teacher and spoke kindly "Sorry miss... Forgot that we shouldn't make any noises... I'll just be shutting up now." Miyako put her index and thumb of her right hand together and ran it against her mouth and stood straight up as a sign of respect to the teacher.

Archer made sure to drop his egg off before coming to class, and so walked with a quick pace to get to class. It looked like his classmates were taking their time, though – he was still one of the first ones here!
He saw several students, but the one that stood out most was Lel. His size dwarfed the others, and made him rather hard not to see. Of course, the Hungarian beat him here. Figured! They really couldn't get enough battling, could they? He'd heard several girls in the hallway chatting about this; each evidently smitten with his masculine appearance. One had even talked about challenging him to a battle, and making him take her on a date of she won. Psh! Archer doubted her little Cleffa would get far against the foreigner. The wannabe Asian was already here too, go figure. He was probably one of those annoying, smart Asian kids. Tojuro had also made his appearance, and looked as giddy as ever. Good grief! Give it a rest, already.
Archer sighed as he made his way to the back of the class, as instructed by the sign left on the door. He might have done otherwise, but neither the teacher, nor her Pokemon looked even slightly happy. Ms. Lyon, was it? He'd read online that she wasn't to be taken lightly, and wasn't about to go testing that himself. He wouldn't need to, though. Tall, dark, and stupid had for him! The green-haired idiot followed after him. It looked like Archer was going to see just how unpleasant this woman was, and he wouldn't even the the victim. Score! Sure, Ms. Lyon hardly looked like she might be malicious at first sight. That didn't seem to mean much at Phoenix Academy, though. Mr. Jones was a bespectacled twig, after all, and he was definitely a pain.
Sighing one more, Archer leaned against the back wall, waiting for his peers to arrive. The sooner they got this over with, the better!

Pain is temporary; quitting is forever.
Holly made it just in time! Had that nasty Garbodor still been blocking the area by the dumpsters though, she'd have definitely been late! She'd have to find a way to thank Lel for helping her out, even though she hadn't the slightest idea what she could do to make him happy. Oh well! She had all year to figure that out, right?
The teenage girl's mood dropped as she caught sight of the sign. Uh Oh... She took a gulp. Athena was definitely in a bad mood, and Holly knew the she wasn't above taking it out on her class! Holly wanted to turn around, but realized the keen woman was probably already aware of her presence. A defeated sigh escaped her lips as she made her way the the back of the class, close to Vern. She had no choice, and she wasn't about to do this alone! She might have stood next to Lel, but she knew first hand that he'd be too preoccupied with the contents of the class to notice her.
Perhaps, if she was lucky, she'd manage to stay out of harms way? She's kept on Mr. Jones good side, after all! That was a first. Maybe, just maybe, she could do the same with the monster before her? Team Rocket wasn't looking so bad anymore!
[Breeding Classs] When you fell asleep, what you usually dreamed about? Hanging out with your imaginary friends? Battling in the pokemon league? Rescuing a damsel in distress? Or perhaps nothing at all? Anyway, since 5 years ago, Arthur had been having the same dream again, again, and agiain. Sweet and delicious.
"Wait for me!!!!!!" And here came chibi Arthur in his blue pajama, runnin after...a human-sized strawberry shortcake? And it had legs and arms! "I said wait!!!!!!!!" Suddenly the distance between them incresed exponentially and he panicked! "NOOOO!!!!!!
"...wait...strawberry..." Back to reality, Arhur had his eyes closed, whimpering softly, a single tear slid down his cheek slowly. When a voice spoke to him and a hand was shaking him gently, he started to wake up, eyes opened and stared blankly at the face of the pink-haired girl.
[Now to Battling Class]
Heading to his next class, Arthur yawned loudly as he walked behind the girl. Once the breeding class ended, he asked the girl to show him the way to the battling class, saying he still didn't know the way around here well and she was like his first friend in this goddamned place lovingly beautiful academy. Someone he could rely on until he knew the layout better. "Thanks again for helping me. You really are kind. Oh, by the way, what's your name? I'm Arthur. Arthur Wright." He had a bright happy smile on his face and both his hands inside his pant pockets.
One after one, her unfortunate students piled into class. First came a tall man -who practically towered over Athena!, followed by Miss Iris Haruno and then her boyfriend mister Sombra. In the silence of her classroom, one could hear a pin drop, so when Marco tried talking to Iris it was infact quite clearly heard to the young woman. Right away, the more intelligent greenhead was quick to put a hand over his mouth; she smirked inwardly. Not even a minute into class, and she already had one talker? Lydia was next, who was evidently feeling very awkward with everybody being quiet. Another inward smirk. Following in after miss Cross was a student that had managed to impress not only his exam practitioner last year, but the other teachers for his outstanding performance during the Battle Final Exams. If memory served, that same student was on the roster for her Advanced Battle Tactics course as well. An awkwardly thin boy with silver hair and green eyes came in next, breathing heavily. Some other students came in (NPCs) following the scrawny boy, including what Athena could've sworn was Iris's doppelganger. Right away, she "whispered" to her greenheaded twin, and acted as if Mrs. Athena Lyon hadn't heard her when infact she could hear every sound in the room. The Iris doppelganger apologized for talking, but Athena made no form of acknowledgement of her.
Infact, she was dead quiet. Watching ever so patiently as more and more students came in; it wasn't until a blond boy and girl -the latter of whom she recognized as Miss Holohan- arrived into class did she finally move from her otherwise still position against the wall. She was well aware that more students were coming, but the greater majority of her roster was present, and the tardy bell was soon going to ring. Only seconds before, another male made it into the door... Talking. That was strike three.
The bell rang, and it was now time for class adjourn. The door closed shut and Noctowl flew down from her perch above the door onto a second one at the front of the classroom and several feet above Athena. There was an unsettling silence upon the classroom as all of her students got into a line as instructed and had their heads turned to look at. She stepped forward from the front of the classroom, towards her students only by a yard. ”As you should all be aware of after yesterday's assembly, I am Misses Athena Lyon.” She begun in her Scandinavian accent, unusually calm. "I will be your Battle instructor for the school year, and for those of you unfortunate enough to have me twice, I am also the Advanced Battle Tactics teacher." None of her Pokémon moved as their trainer paced back and forth. "Because I teach two different classes, I have two different requirements. Regardless of the category you fall under, I expect these requirements to be full-filled to a "T". If not..." The tone of her voice darkened a little, but remained unsettlingly calm. "... The punishment shall be severe, and will increase with each offense. And they do not reset at the end of the semester."
"The first of these requirements, will be to arrive promptly to class prepared and ready for what we are doing for the day. The only time in which tardiness, or even full-on absents, is excusable, is if you have a note from one of the other staff. If in the unlikely event that you need to bring something out of the ordinary to either of my classes, I will inform you all of such the class before. This applies to my Advanced Tactics students, too, except I will be informing you of any extra materials in this class, the day before, instead." She continued her pacing, watching all of her students with a hawk's eye.
"The second of these requirements will be that chart behind me. It is the type match-up chart, which I expect every last one of you to have memorized in two weeks time. The punishment for this will be detention with me after classes doing whatever I see fit. And there are plenty of you in here right now, whom I'm sure would rather not have to experience that with me again." Her gaze glanced over at miss Iris Haruno and mister Marco Sombra. "And for those Advanced Battle Tactics students, that chart will be known by heart come class tomorrow. The punishment will not only be detention with me, but the punishment of Requirement One added on top of it for every class that you still don't have it down. Is that understood? Nod, if you all understand." There were a bunch of nodding heads, nobody was talking anymore. One could hear a pin fall.
"The third of these requirements will be to follow any and all instructions posted up on the door or the front of the classroom. Failure to do so, will result in the same punishment as unexcused tardiness or absentness. This includes talking." Her odd eyes focused on the three culprits. "Normally I don't mind chatter. But when it's hung up on a sign, that cannot possibly be missed, that clearly states no talking, it's inexcusable; will be punished in the same manner as Requirement One." Athena and her Noctowl had her own gaze fixed onto the three talkers, detention slacker (Marco), goppelganger (Miyako), and the boy who had blatantly walked into class talking up a storm (Arthur!) with Miss White. "Now, since it's the first day of class, normally I would have allowed for a minor slip up, especially from a first time student. However, I got three students who clearly do not know how to follow simple directions or are incapable of reading English! And Dyslexia is an excuss that will never ever fly in my classes."
Athena was seething with anger.
"I don't know what Mr. Jones or Ms. Ezra are like in their classes, but I can assure you that whatever you thought of them I am a HUNDRED times worse!" She motioned for her Lucario, who sent an Aura Sphere attack at Marco, whom intentionally missed. With the attacks impeccable accuracy, that was the only way for it to miss was if you wanted it to. "Isn't that right, Mister Sombra de Milagros?" She turned back to the rest of her students, no longer pacing. "I was going to try and be nice for a change today, but you can thank those three chatterboxes for what's coming next." She paused again, breathing in slowly. "Thanks to those three, you are all going to get to experience just how I punish students who don't follow the rules!" Noctowl ruffled her feathers, preparing herself. "And I am going to make sure that every last one of you gets a lessened feel for what will happen to you if you don't do as I say in this class or are disruptive to the classroom environment in anyway, shape, or form. If you cooperate, it will be over with very quickly; if you don't cooperate then I will only last longer. Once your turn is over, you may take out a notebook and pencil and copy down the chart up at the front of the classroom, if and only if you need to. This week will be the only week that it's up, so I advice getting it written down now. And then, once you are done with that as well as the punishment, you and your Pokémon of choice may get out sparring sticks and go against each other. It's important for a trainer to learn how to fight just as much as it is for the Pokémon; it's also good to know the style in which your Pokémon battles, and then that way they can be improved upon in whatever way seems fit." Her instructions now over, she eyed her silent classroom somemore. Who was going to be her first victim...? Standing next to miss Cottanball, was a certain Vern Keliikoa that for some reason, Athena just wanted to make as her first example.
"Mister Keliikoa! Thank you for volunteering as my first demonstration." Vern's eyes widened, his face paled, and his body trembled as his scary-a** battle teacher called him forward. Ryuichi glanced at him, worried. The young man looked over at Holly and Iris, and he could've sworn to Arceus that his heart had even stopped for a brief moment. "M-me?" The poor boy's entire body was shaking in fright, not knowing what to expect from the teacher. "Come hither." Vern gulped, walking towards his doom with the utmost reluctance. He tried reminding himself that if he cooperated, whatever she was about to do to him would be less. Not knowing what to expect, he also tried to think of happy thoughts, song lyrics, his baby sister, anything!
"AHHHH." Suddenly Vern was down on the floor with his hand holding his head, screaming in pain. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Something was literally grabbing at his mind, peering into his thoughts, his memories, and his subconscious. All at once, he could feel that same something bringing forth his painful memories, his abusive father, his stillborn brother, Christmas eve, Kyurem, his fears, and all of his nightmares and the things that haunted him. Everything. Everything was playing through his mind, clouding his vision, blocking out all of his senses...
And then it was over. As soon as it'd begun it was done with just like that. Vern lay there on the floor, shaking uncontrollably. He failed to notice his classmates starring at him in awe, wondering what had just happened to him.
"Noctowl... Did you really have to go that hard on him? I mean, I did say a lesser version of what would normally be given." The owl huffed defensively. "I barely touched him! Not my fault he's got such a weak mind." Noctowl protested via telepathy, loud enough for everybody in the room to hear her sassy remark. Athena rolled her eyes, then extended a hand to lift the poor boy up. "Come on, go get your sparring gear." She helped her student back onto his feet. Then, Mrs. Lyon looked back at the rest of her students. "Next!" One by one, each student got their turn at Noctowl, with each "turn" lasting only two or three seconds. Only the three talkers from earlier got to experience a longer go at the mind penetration, but overall was kept at low degree of severity so as to prevent unnecessary psychological damage.
"And when you start your sparring match, only then may you start talking."
Archer's arms were crossed as Athena went about her crazed rant. It was clearer than daylight that this woman had several screws loose.
He hadn't the foggiest idea why Vern was chosen first – so little as Archer cared, it made no sense that a half-decent student be targeted. The fact that Vern was sent to the ground didn't bother him much either, though it did surprise him. If anything, it served him right for laughing at him when he was assigned detention! When it was announced however, that each student present would undergo the same punishment, Archer raised a brow. This woman was serious? This was interrogation; torture. So much as she might fancy herself as a drill sergeant, she wasn't any more than a high-salary teacher working at a high-end school.
What would possess her to throw this out into the open on the first day, though? PMS, maybe? Though... Acting like this, no sane man would go near her. Maybe that was her dilemma? Archer had little intentions of asking. Instead, he spoke up; his voice unimpressed and pragmatic. “I doubt this is legal.” Well, what the hell? This amoral she-beast made it clear the were all going to get it – if anything, speaking up would just hasten his turn. Besides! Archer was a spoiled brat, and he knew it! He had no memories that could rattle him like that. Even if pushed that far, his pride wouldn't allow him to buckle. “Does the school board know about your... curriculum?” Archer asked, clearly wary to address this exercise as education. He highly doubted it. Such dry matters weren't the delinquent's favorite subjects, but they were ones he'd been taught for years - if he could use this knowledge to his benefit, he'd gladly do so. His parents intended for Archer to one day run their business, after all! Therefore, both law and business were topics he was savvy in. This wouldn't be the first time he'd squirmed himself out of trouble like this, if this somehow worked.
He awaited a response, and very likely, a strong mental attack to follow. He wouldn't, unlike his lackluster classmates, let this psychotic woman destroy his pride.
