The official, approved history of the nation of Panem

The Dark Days

A long time ago, thirteen districts rose up in rebellion against their Capitol. When this happened, the Capitol was forced to create fearsome beasts known as Muttations. Some of these Muttations were Jabberjays, who relayed information overheard by the rebels back to the Capitol. There were also tracker jackers, wasp-like creatures with deadly venom. The Capitol also bombed a few of the districts with its hovercrafts.

Eventually, the rebels attempted a raid on the Capitol, but the natural fortification of the Rocky Mountains surrounding the Capitol left them exposed and easy targets. Needless to say, the invasion was a failure.

The end of the Dark Days occurred when District Thirteen, the district who had started the battles was destroyed. Once the rebellion had ended, the Capitol put into place The Hunger Games in order to remind the districts of their disobedience. Every twenty-five years events known as Quarter Quells were held.

First Quarter Quell

The first Quarter Quell in Hunger Games history had an interesting twist to it. Instead of the tributes being reaped randomly, citizens of the districts had to vote for their tributes. Many tributes felt betrayed by their own neighbors and their was almost a sense of animosity toward their home districts.

Second Quarter Quell

The second Quarter Quell required that twice the amount of tributes were to be sent into the arena. Given the larger number of tributes, the Games lasted the longest to date. The winner, who is still living was Maia Salzar of District Twelve.

Third Quarter Quell

In case you're wondering about what each district does, this is your handy guide.

Capitol

A technologically advanced, utopian city in the middle of the Rocky Mountains. This is the seat of power in Panem, meaning all districts are overseen from here. The Hunger Games are planned and celebrated here. It is well known for it's absurd fashion trends and lavish food.

District 1

One of the richest districts in Panem due to the fact that they specialize in producing luxury goods for the Capitol, which has made them one of the more favorable districts. Because one of these goods are gems, many parents name their children after them. Names such as Sapphire and Onyx are quite common. Children from this district take pride in participating in the Hunger Games and can almost always be found among the Career Pack. Some of the jobs that the people have in District One are perfumer, furrier, jeweler, goldsmith, winemaker, and hair stylist.

District 2

One of the wealthiest districts in Panem, Peacekeepers are sent here to be trained and weapons are made here, even though is was originally supposed to specialize in mining and stone quarries. Publicly, that is exactly what the district is known for. Their tributes are commonly found among the Career Pack. Some of the jobs in this district include stonemason, concrete finisher, bricklayer, brick mason, plasterer, blacksmith, and Peacekeeper.

District 3

The main industry of this district is technology. They make televisions and computers. Most residents work in factories and are very adept at engineering. Some of the jobs in this district include technical support, assembly operator, engineer, tester, technician, and electronic installation.

District 4

One of the wealthiest districts in Panem due to its primary industry of fishing. Because of this, tributes from this district are often skilled in using nets and tridents, making fishhooks, swimming, and identifying edible sea life. These tributes are often found among the Career Pack. Some jobs in this district include longliner, trawler, canner, ship captain, deckhand, and fisherman.

District 5

This district's main industry is power and electricity. It is responsible for generating the power for the entire nation of Panem. Some of the jobs in this district include power plant security officer, geologist, equipment manager, system analyst, and maintenance.

District 6

This district's primary industry is transportation, which is ironic, since many residents of District Six hate to travel. It is believed that Morphling-addiction is a wide spread issue in the district. Most victors take it to forget what happened in the Games. Some jobs in this district are porter, router, mechanic, conductor, and baggage handler.

District 7

One of the poorer districts, this district specializes in lumber. The district is covered in trees and the people are known to be good with axes. Some jobs in this district include lumberjack, load puller, lead climber, furniture builder, carpenter, and papermaker.

District 8

One of the poorest districts in Panem, this district specializes in textiles and clothing. They make uniforms for the Peacekeepers. There is hardly any greenery and the housing is very poor. Some of the jobs include factory worker, weaver, dress maker, designer, and warehouse manager.

District 9

This district is the breadbowl of Panem, being responsible for much of the nation's grain production. There are many factories for grain processing. Some of the jobs include cropper, farmer, plower, sower, and harvester.

District 10

One of the poorest districts in Panem. Its primary industry is livestock and it provides beef to the Capitol. Most of the district is farmland. Some of the jobs include butcher, milker, rancher, barn manager, breeder, farmer, and brander.

District 11

One of the poorest districts. Their primary industry is agriculture and almost everything they grow is sent to the Capitol. Starvation is a common problem. If a citizen is caught eating anything they grow, they are to be whipped in public. Some of the jobs include sorter, irrigator, farmhand, harvester, and gardener.

District 12

This is the poorest district in all of Panem. Its primary industry is mining. Some of the jobs in this district are coal miner, geologist, blaster, surveyor and metallurgist.

District 13

Thought to be destroyed during the Dark Days. It is believed to be a uninhabitable, even though the district is still fully functional. The district is hidden underground and is the only district that is not under the control of the Capitol.
