I have recently recieved a letter via the most recent docking, carried in a rather official-looking envelope, along with a rather magnificent specimen of Oreamnos americanus. I have included it here in its entirity to keep a record of this animal.
Moreau,
As you asked, I've been searching for quite a while for the perfect beast for your doings. Early on, I was able to rule out a carnivorous creature, due to their early nature and tendency to bite the hand that feeds them, as it were. While in Scotland, I came across a wild herd of goats, one of which stood out among the others, in my opinion, as your perfect subject. He is young, though strong. He has already established himself among his peers as a forceful fellow, though fair. He does not act without provocation, yet he expects to be obeyed.
I would say of this animal that he has both a sense of justice as well as a sense of compassion, if you will allow me to have a momentary lapse and personify. It is what he will become, after all. After some wrangling, I managed to capture him, and after several days, I was able to touch him. Ultimately, I say I have chosen from the best of the lot, as this can be the beast that will become your Law.
Given that you've asked my opinion on the matter, I should say that, to avoid temptation, the goat should be blinded early on. I thought that perhaps he should be deafened, too, though how can one say the law if they cannot hear those who are breaking it? Perhaps removing his olfactory apparatus would do in the stead of that, so he will not be tempted as he bretheren might be to eat flesh or fish. I also must insist that his fingertips remain hard and unfeeling, so that he will not be tempted to touch, or to give into the instinct that cannot be cured.
I send him to you whole and without blemish. He has not been injured or marred in any way; I took great pains to ensure that. I will return on the next vessel as soon as possible. Until then, good luck to you and your colleagues.
