I think I'd say
The Crying of Lot 49 is my favorite book on an intellectual level and
Wraeththu is my favorite on an emotional level. Uh, beware, because when I start talking about books I kind of just don't stop.
Superficially speaking, The Crying of Lot 49 is about a woman trying to execute her ex-husband's will and accidentally stumbling onto what may or may not be an ancient conspiracy about mail delivery. It's every bit as absurd as it sounds, and you're pretty much in this constant state of uncertainty--there are a lot of really fascinating brief interactions with characters where you're never really sure whether they were significant in any way, and there are clues pointing in pretty much every direction at once, and all in all in makes some fascinating statements about the nature of truth how people constuct meaning. It's really pretty mind-blowing. Also just phenomenally worded, sometimes extremely funny, and the conspiracy story itself is pretty neat. This is what the "potsmaster" quote in my signature is from, actually.
Wraeththu is a really unique sort-of-fantasy-sort-of-sci-fi series that essentially tells the story of this new branch of humanity that appears after an apocalypse and how their society develops. That glimpse into a new species coming into being and into the rebuilding of society is really neat, and there's some super fascinating gender stuff going on too because the new species is simultaneously male and female, but above all the characters are just
oh my god amazing. I don't think I've ever been more emotionally invested in a fictional character that I have with some of the ones from these books (and it's the only time I've been genuinely enraged at a fictional character). Also the ending is really surprisingly satisfying, and the writing itself is absolutely beautiful (I mean, if you can stomach flowery prose--it's flowery prose
done well but it's still flowery prose).
And yeah I'm not really a big movie person so I'm not too sure on a favorite, but Monty Python and the Holy Grail is the one movie I can watch over and over again and never get tired of.
Wine colored Roses
Legend of the Guardians is the movie version of the Ga'Hoole series.
I love them both, but they are completely different. The movie
completely went off the storyline of the books, which to me is fine, because
I view movie remakes of books as completely different things.
You can't fit every detail you find in books into a movie, so I am okay
with it. They did a beautiful job on the movie, so that makes up for it. c:
You know, I still just know that movie as "the owl movie that used a 30 Seconds to Mars song", haha.
