In the beginning, Simon was extremely withdrawn and shy; most likely a result of witnessing his parents' deaths at the age of seven. However, after fighting a gunman at the first time on the surface, he became less shy. But, he became scared due to all the pressure that was being put on him to fight and stay strong for he team. After Kamina's death, he became depressed and anti-social; he couldn't even operate Lagann because his emotions were unstable. Once he met Nia, he started to open up a bit; he first forgot about his grief because he had experienced "love at first sight". After saving her and returning her to Dai-Gurren, however, he returned to his depression. He snapped out of it after awhile, and became the new leader of Team Dai-Gurren. He tries to mirror Kamina's leadership, but with his own style, and has even adapted to using Kamina's phrase, "Who the hell do you think I am".

Simon was born in the underground village of Jeeha, one of the few villages blessed with plenty of food and electricity. When he was seven, there was a massive tremor that caused most of the village to collapse. In this crisis, rocks crushed his parents and he was orphaned. He was taken care of, though, since the village chief always did his best to take care of the villagers. Simon became a digger for the village at a young age because he enjoyed digging and finding little treasures. And, if he did a good job, he was rewarded with pigmole steaks.
Now, Simon wasn't the only orphan in the village. There were plenty of orphaned kids. One of these orphans was Kamina, a mostly self-centered and righteous teenager that always had Simon's back. He would always defend Simon and took him under his wing. Simon came to rely on Kamina, and no matter hkw bizarre and dangerous his schemes to reach the so-called "imaginary" surface, he followed him. During one of these attempts, Simon and Kamina, along with a couple friends, got caught in an earthquake and was stuck. However, Kamina never gave up and Simon dug a way out for them.
When he was thirteen, he found a small, glowing drill that Kamina encouraged him to keep since the drill was Simon's soul. That night, Simon was doing extra digging and found a giant metal face; he busted Kamina out of jail to show it to him. While Kamina was being punished for breaking out of jail, another earthquake hit and something fell from the ceiling. It was a gigantic face. Simon met Yoko then, and took her and Kamina to the face he found. With the small Lagann, Simon and Kamina destroyed the other machine and busted their way to the surface.
Time passed, and on their journey to the Beastman and Gunman recall point, Simon met many new friends. Leeron the engineer from Yoko's village of Littner, the Black Siblings, Rossiu of Adahi Village, and many others. He had so many new friends, and he was a team with them and Kamina. To Simon, it was like a dream come true. However, that perfect little dream didn't last. Nothing happy ever does.
During a battle with one of the Spiral King's four generals, Simon wasn't doing so well because he was distracted by the fact that Yoko had kissed Kamina; and, he liked Yoko. However, Kamina came and punched some sense into him and he regained focus on the mission to take control of the general's Dai Gunzen and make it Team Gurren's. But, Kamina was attacked by a surprise attacked from Tymilph. Simon watched as Kamina was killed, and his emotional state caused an unstable takeover of Dai Gunzen. But, Simon was able to combine with Kamina's Gurren one last time to destroy Tymilph. But, Simon lost Kamina immediately after that.
For six days, Simon was lost in his own despair and fought nonstop to avenge his bro, despite everyone's irritatation. During a fight, Lagann with berserk and separated with Gurren. Once Simon awoke, he was in a muddy area filled with old metal boxes. He witnessed a Gunman toss one into the area and approached it. Once he used his Core Drill to open it, Simon was surprised to see a very beautiful girl laying inside. She awoke, and for a few short moments, he forgot about his pain as he became enchanted by this girl. However, they were attacked and Simon tried to fight, but Gurren became unresponsive. He was convinced by Nia to run if he didn't truly wish to die.
For a long while after that, Simon became useless and Gurren was even thrown out with the trash. There was no place for him if he couldn't pull his own weight, and he had to snap himself out of his depression. But, Nia always tried to help. When they were attacked by the third general, Guam, the army they assembled was locked away and to be executed. Everyone gave up, bit Simon dug using the Core Drill. He remembered something Kamina said to him before he died: "Don't believe the Kamina that you believe in. Don't believe in the you I believe in. Believe in the Simon who believes in himself." With that, he was filled with power and Gurren came to him. While he was resuing Nia from Guam, the others began their fight. Simon combined with Gurren, piloted by Rossiu, and with his new-found courage and strength, he forced the Beastmen to retreat. After that, he was made the new leader of Team Dai Gurren, as Kamina had picked.
Time passed, and through many battles, they finally reached the capital of the Beastmen, Teppelin. The battle took seven days, but Simon and Nia broke into the Spiral King's throne room. A battle between Gurren Lagann and Lordgenome's Gurren Lagann-type Gunman broke out. It was a close battle, but using his Core Drill, Simon defeat his enemy and freed humanity from his cruelty. But, Lordgenome left a prophecy of sorts: "When the land overflows with a billion apes, the moon will be the messager of humanity's destruction."
