My favorite Nirvana album and one of my favorite live albums is their MTV Unplugged in New York record, which features excellent versions of
"Plateau," "Oh Me," and "Lake of Fire," all originally done by the Meat Puppets, as well as a great rendition of Leadbelly's
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?"And while we're on the subject of 90's alternative rock, The Breeders do a very good cover of The Beatles'
"Happiness is a Warm Gun."I'd also like to mention the man who is quite possibly my all time favorite recording artist, Scott Walker. Scott Walker was a big fan of Belgian singer-songwriter Jacques Brel, and performed his songs on a number of occasions. Of course, Scott Walker's versions are English translations from the original French, so there's more room for creative liberties than your typical cover, but hey, that's the fun. Anyway, check out
"Mathilde," "Next,", and
"If You Go Away." In fact, Julie Christmas also did a pretty good cover of
"If You Go Away."
