₀₁ █⋮personality》Jasper has never been one to speak more than absolutely necessary, as he can be a rather stoic character. He prefers solitude in order to organize his thoughts and feelings, but at a busy place like Camp Jupiter, it's a difficult wish to grant. He has a leader's natural abilities - people's attention seems to just gravitate in his direction in times of a crisis and he can easily hold the firm authority to keep even the most unruly individuals under control. He's also compassionate - he understands better than most the types of ups and downs life can hand you, and is willing to put the rules aside if he sees that it goes against his morals or can sympathize with the situation. However, by no means is he one to bend over backwards to help another person or give in to a pity case.
Jasper can usually keep his temper under control, but a few triggers can cause him to lose this trait quickly and deal out the punishment as he sees fit. Considering he's a natural fighter, it isn't wise to be the one at the point of his sword. He can also be somewhat harsh towards others when he doesn't agree with them, or if they try to bring up his personal past. He's also never dated before, so he's rather wary about trying to make romantic relations with women. ₀₂ █⋮biography》Ah, let's start from the top, sí? My mamá was, and still is, a gorgeous woman. She moved from Spain to Nevada, USA in her late teens to study at an American college. She wanted a career in teaching and preferred the curriculum in America as opposed to in Spain. During her junior year, she met a man and fell in love with him. Of course, it wasn't nearly that simple, but it was the general gist of it, se ve. He mysteriously disappeared a few months later, the day after she told my father she was pregnant with me. Mamá was heartbroken, but she decided not to have an abortion. "Siempre supe que eras especial, a mi hijo. Me encantó su padre, y Te quiero," she had told me when I asked.
I was born the next year, and my Mamá cared for me and juggled her classes at the same time. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree and began leaving me in the care of babysitters as she began looking for a stable job. Somewhere in the midst of this time, she met a Spanish man named Alejandro. He was a handsome, charming man, and Mamá has told me frequently that he reminds her a little bit of my father. She fell in love with him and they married when I was four years old. He had children as well; my stepsister was eight and my stepbrother was seven at the time. Mamá and I moved from our apartment to his home shortly before the wedding.
I seemed to live a perfect life. My segunda familia accepted my Mamá and I as if we had been part of the family all along. My stepsister was an academic role model and my stepbrother was a track star. My stepfather was a construction worker and my Mamá became a kindergarten teacher, and together they made more than enough money to support the five of us. I was popular among my peers and I had natural athletic ability. Due to a combination of ADD and dyslexia, my grades were mostly average, and it was only because of my stepsister that I did not fail any of my classes.
Everything seemed so perfect, and yet it wasn't. My bedroom was next to Mamá and Alejandro's bedroom, and so I knew when my stepfather began to physically abuse Mamá. "No, por favor, no! Alejandro!" I heard her screams every night, her shouts begging him to stop, and him merely continuing to hurt her. I would lie frozen in my bed, curled under the covers, my hands over my ears wishing it would stop. Now, I feel ashamed of not taking action, but I was scared then. I was still a niño and I wouldn't be able to save Mamá even if I could move. Mamá began wearing long sleeved shirts and dresses to cover the bruises. I constantly begged her to leave Alejandro but she pretended as if she didn't know what I was talking about. I lived in fear every night of Mamá's death and it was a very long time before I could sleep at night. Since that first night, I began to loathe my stepfather, who seemed to transform into a charming, harmless man during the day. If I had the chance, I would not hesitate to kill him.
My stepfather stopped with the abuse when I was around eight or so. I was relieved, but I still hated him. He was an evil man and I would never forgive him for hurting Mamá. Soon after, Mamá delivered the "wonderful" news: she was going to have a baby. I was shocked at the news; it wasn't the news itself that surprised me, but that Mamá had still slept with Alejandro after all the times he had hurt her. I didn't take to the news well and my hatred for my stepfather only increased. Ramon was born a few months later and I admit I grew fond of him. I was his favorite of my siblings and I often took care of him. Mamá seemed genuinely happy for the first time in years and so I dropped my case against Alejandro for the time being, focusing on Ramon and school.
I was ten years old and I was coming home from baseball practice. When I entered the kitchen, I found Alejandro hitting Mamá with a frying pan, shouting in Spanish. She was begging for him to stop through a stream of fat tears while my siblings stood immobile in the doorway. My anger and hatred seemed to well up inside me and I rushed into action. I slammed the baseball bat over his head and he passed out. My siblings and I rushed to our mother in a hug and I begged my mother again to leave my stepfather. This time, she agreed.
Mamá, my stepsister, stepbrother, Ramon, and I fled from our home in Nevada, buying plane tickets to Maine. We didn't care where we went, as long as Alejandro wasn't there with us. For a few weeks, we thought we were safe. We settled down in an apartment, Mamá enrolled us in school and found a teaching job, and we thought that was the last of my stepfather. But then he found us. He had burst through the door carrying a gun and ordering for us to return to Nevada with him. Mamá refused and he grabbed her around the neck. I cried out and my stepbrother knocked him out from behind. Again we fled for our lives.
We did this seven times over the course of one and a half years. We would hide out in a different part of the country, believe we were safe, and then he would find us. He always found us.
I was almost twelve and we were headed for Redding, CA when Mamá drove us to an outdoor café for a rest stop. We sat together, though Mamá sat at one side of the table while my siblings and I sat on the other. She was soon joined by a man with a police uniform and they began to talk. I was excited to see him. He was a police officer, after all; he could arrest Alejandro. At my suggestion, she confided to him about my stepfather. The police officer was silent before he leaned in close to her. I could just barely hear him agreeing to take Mamá home with him, but he had one condition: he didn't want kids. He would take my stepsister and stepbrother because they were older, but not me or Ramon. At this, I was sure Mamá would refuse his offer and we would leave, but she said something that changed my life forever: "Sí, aprobado."
Even as I stood with Ramon in my hands watching the police cruiser pull away, I couldn't believe what had happened. Mamá had abandoned me. She had abandoned Ramon. She had never loved us. My head was spinning and my emotions were in turmoil. I waited there until night fell for the realization to hit me: Mamá wasn't coming back. Ramon was asleep in my arms and I remembered an aunt I had visited only once in Sacramento. She had a lot of children, but she was kind, and would probably be able to take us in. And with that thought in mind, our journey south began.
It took one and a half months to arrive at my tía's. Ramon and I were hungry, dirty, and distressed. We had been living on the streets and it was made even harder since Ramon was only three. I was emotionally strung and I didn't know what else to do other than go to my tía's home, hoping she would be able to take us in. I had grown angry towards my Mamá for leaving me, but I still couldn't find it in me to hate her completely. I just wish I knew why she left her youngest sons so readily. Ramon was probably traumatized for life. Everyday, he asked where Mamá was and I couldn't find it in my heart to answer him.
As I was saying, we arrived on my tía's doorstep looking very much like orphaned, homeless children. She ushered inside; she cleaned us, fed us, and forced us to take a nap before letting me say one word. I woke up in the middle of the night to find her downstairs in the kitchen. I explained to her what had happened, confident now that she would let us stay. She gave me a look of pity and said regretfully, "Lo siento, sobrino, pero no puede permitirse el lujo de tomar a ustedes dos pulgadas Ojalá pudiera, pero apenas puedo mantener a mis propios hijos." I felt despair, but I didn't hesitate in asking if she would take Ramon. She agreed to that, which I was grateful of. She offered to take me to a foster home but I declined and asked if she could give me one thing before I left. My tía also agreed to this and in the next couple of hours, I was headed for who knows where.
I wasn't sure how much time passed. I wasn't sure where I was going. I just wanted to distance myself from Mamá, Alejandro, tía, and Ramon. The rest of the story is quite sencillo. At this point, I was twelve and had wandered into a forest, more specifically a clearing where there lay an abandoned house. This is of course where Lupa comes into the picture. She tested me, taught me, then sent me on my way to Camp Jupiter. I was chased by monsters all the way there, but made it mostly unscathed. I was claimed while a camper showed me around, right on the Via Principalis. I had no letter of recommendation, but the fourth cohort offered to take me. The next day, I became a full member of the legion when I pulled an older demigod out of the way during the war games after he was injured.
