Since I don't know where else these may or may not go...

Anime North 2013 just wrapped up this weekend and here are the pics I managed to take.
I don't get around as much as I'd like since I am staff at the con.

Anime cons are great, this one is completely fan-run, which I believe makes it one of the, if not the largest fan-run, non-profit con in North America. This year we hit 23,700 attendees (1315 more then last year).

They all start small and grow, Anime North started at a mere 600 people.

Yep, AN has been growing since, when I started going to it attendance was raising about 1000 to 2000 a year. They introduced attendance caps at that point since staff were stretched thin (we are all volunteers so its hard to assemble staff sometimes).

Do they just not have the revenue to afford more help?

You should try to go, even if its just for a day.

Trust me, you can't go wrong, with Anime North you go there and no matter who you are, or what you look like, its like everyone is your friend. Not all cons are like that but I think that it depends on the cons nature.

It's a non-profit convention, all money that isn't used to get voice actors, musicians, staff hotel rooms, etc; is donated to Sick Kids. No staff are paid, we just choose to do it each year. I take off 2 days of work and spend about $600 (I get my own hotel room) each year just to go to AN and help run it.

So when it comes to staffing, we tend to rely on those that keep coming back and those that want to help keep the con running, some volunteer part-time during the con, others do it more and become full-time staff.

Full-time for the duration of the convention?

Yeah it looks and sounds really interesting.. I will eventually try to go to any of the conventions when my schedule opens up.

Pretty much, we do get brakes and such but we spend more time running the con then actually taking part in events.
