Tenebrae is almost always serious, but he will make a joke or pun that only he tends to find funny from time to time. He is the most loyal to Ratatosk of the Centurions, but has grown fond of humans and the ilk during his journey with Emil and Marta, so he is rather friendly if he can feel he can trust a person. Tenebrae is a rather intelligent creature, and he can be very curious if something catches his attention.

Tenebrae's life, if explained in full, would continue long after the listener passed away. However, he was born when the world was created by the Summon Spirit Ratatosk, the King of Monsters, to serve him and the Summon Spirit of Darkness, Shadow. Being a Centurion, his main goal was to keep the doorway to Niflheim, the world of demons, closed. The doorway is called the Ginnungagap, and is sealed so long as the eight Centurion Cores and the Ratatosk Core go uninterrupted.
For millions of years, this has gone undisturbed. However, the Kharlan War caused a disturbance because the Summon Spirits had formed pacts with a young half-elven boy named Mithos so that he and his companions could end the war. However, Mithos betrayed the Summon Spirits and split the world in two. This caused the Ginnungagap to open slightly, letting in monsters of unimaginable appearance that only exist in Niflheim. However, Tenebrae and his companions kept this door closed; even while they were scattered across both worlds, separate from one another.
A century ago, the balance was broken when a half-elf named Richter Abend and his friend, Aster, found a way inside the Ginnungagap. Ratatosk, who had grown to hate humans and the like, lashed out and struck Aster, killing him. After that, Ratatosk's Core was stolen by Richter so that he could enact his revenge. Being the most loyal of Centurions, Tenebrae followed after the Core. It became imprinted upon the head of a girl, Marta, and he followed her so that he could protect Ratatosk. However, as time passed, he came to realize that the Core was false, and that Ratatosk had escaped by taking on the form of Aster and living under the identity of a boy from Luin named Emil. Emil was his own person, and somehow he and Ratatosk had become merged; this was likely a result of Emil being killed at the time of Ratatosk's escape in the Blood Purge that was occurring in Palmacosta.
Tenebrae stayed with Marta to protect her from the Vanguard, who were after her because she held the Core, but he kept searching for Ratatosk. He finally found him in Luin, and tricked Emil to become a Knight of Ratatosk so that Tenebrae could release Ratatosk. At this time, he didn't care for Emil's and Marta's safety; all he wanted was for Ratatosk to be free and return to the Ginnungagap with him after collecting the Centurion Cores that had been locked away in temples across the newly united world of Aselia. However, throughout his journey with Emil and Marta, he came to realize just how valuable human life was; Ratatosk's wish to obliterate humans, elves, and half-elves became a not-so favorable trait to Tenebrae.
Eventually, Ratatosk came to see this as well. After revealing that Emil would have to die in order to release Ratatosk and seal the Ginnungagap again, Tenebrea led his companions to the doorway. There, they battled Aqua, the Centurion of Water, who had fallen in love with Richter Abend and had been his constant companion on the half-elf's journey for revenge. With her Core, the eight Cores had been collected. After a battle with Richter, Ratatosk and the Centurions sealed the Ginnungagap again. However, in order to give Emil the life Ratatosk stole from him, the King of Monsters replaced Emil with Richter. A century has passed since these events, and Tenebrae still faithfully serves Ratatosk.
