All this warring and fighting lately really made it difficult to get a good night's sleep. Not to mention it made it difficult for him to even get water from the nearby stream. Why did they have to fight so close to his house, the one he spent eons building from scratch. Tch, he couldn't do anything about it. Not like he could talk sense into either side. Getting out of bed, Ellery grabbed an apple from the basket full he'd picked yesterday. At least he'd managed to grab some supplies yesterday, else he'd have nothing to eat today. All the fighting scared off the game that usually inhabited these woods. It even scared away his cats. Sigh. He took a bite of the apple, then set it down so he could change his clothes. Today he needed to head into town so he could pick up some meat. He couldn't really live off fruit, and the few meager vegetables he'd managed to scrounge up. He needed meat. Unfortunately, the fastest way to the closest town is straight through the wreckage caused by the war. Tch. Ellery packed up supplies he'd need for the trip, putting them into a nice handstitched rucksack. With that, he headed out, praying to the gods that his house would still be standing when he got back. A few hours of travelling found him only halfway there. Then again, he had to detour once or twice due to wreckage being too severe to safely cross. Honestly, what were they even fighting about. This was starting to be too much, even for him. Coming up over the hill, Ellery saw yet another war site. Now that he thought about it, there'd been an old temple here before. It was always a nice place to stop and rest, given it was pretty much at the halfway point. Now it was completely ruined..... Ellery slid down the hill, heading over to the wreckage to look it over. "Damnit, why'd they have to ruin one of my favorite places?" he asked irritably, though to no one in particular. He slowed down as he got closer, feeling magic in the air, yet... warped. It was giving him a really bad feeling, like he shouldn't get any closer. What the hell was going on?

Matt was always traveling from town to town, trying to avoid the constant battles when he could. Both sides were constantly trying to enlist him, but he refused every time. It got to the point that some soldiers from different sides would track him to remote locations, and he'd either give them the slip and trap them into battling each other, or simply beating them all senseless. He knew they wouldn't kill him, or gravely injure him, they wanted, needed, his help to end the war quickly. "Or you could just end the war yourselves by giving up fighting," he'd tell them each time they pestered him. It had come to the point he needed to form armor around himself to conceal his face, wearing specialized helms to cover his eyes, but allow him to see. He hated hiding himself, but he hated being called on like a pawn even worse. He remembered hearing about an old temple, about how it had secrets within. Someplace probably no one would look for him at. Maybe it was about time hid himself from until the fighting ended. He wasn't the only merc that the soldiers were trying to enlist, but the way he fought back made them want his skills more.

Ellery backed away to the point he couldn't feel the warped magic as much and found a place to sit down and rest. He stared at the wreckage, wondering just why it was so warped where the temple used to be. Didn't there used to be old stories about why the temple was built in the first place? He never really paid attention to old wives' tales like those. Maybe if he did he'd at least have some inkling about all this warped magic in the air. There was probably some old wives' tale about that, too. Well, he supposed there wasn't any use dwelling on it much. Maybe he could ask about it once he got to town. Though, this meant he'd have to make a small detour here, too, instead of cutting straight across. He didn't really feel comfortable getting too close to whatever was causing that warped magic. Sighing, Ellery dug into his rucksack and took out a canteen of water, taking a drink from it. A short rest wouldn't hurt before starting off yet again towards town.

The lands were scarred from constant fighting, various structures demolished. Wherever they took there fighting, the surrounding place suffered. Matt felt half tempted to join a side, but was too torn to pick one he felt was more deserving. Indecision was his option, and he wanted no part of the destruction that was overcoming these lands. He was getting close to where the temple was supposed to be. Something wasn't right, though. According to the rumors, he should be able to see it from where he was. He saw nothing but rubble in the distance, and what seemed like a lone figure. Had this possible sanctuary from the fighting been destroyed also? He approached cautiously towards the site, hoping to find answers.

Ellery finished his apple, and threw the core off to the side. He always hated eating the core. It'd be good for birds to eat. If not, the seeds would eventually become a tree anyway. His stomach grumbled, as if telling him apples weren't enough. Tch, he already knew that. It should be enough to last him until he hit town, though. That's all that mattered. Ellery stood and stretched out, then slung his rucksack over his shoulder. Well, he supposed it was time to head out once more. Yet, as he moved to do so, movement from across the way caught his eye. Ellery stopped and looked in that direction, seeing if it wasn't just his eyes playing tricks. Yep, definitely someone there. An armored someone. The sight made him wary, especially since it seemed they were heading towards him. Though he couldn't think of any reason why he would. Ellery shook his head and started going around the wreckage. Either way, if they had business with him, nothing would get done by him just standing there. Especially with that warped magic where the temple used to be.

The person in the distance appeared to be a civilian. Young, but probably close to Matt's age. He had an almost familiar appearance, but he wasn't able to fully tell. All the way out here, he figured there was no need to maintain the armor so heavily, so he touched the helmet, bright light moving it to his pouch in case he needed the metal for something else. His face was now seen, his crimson hair almost glued to his head from being stuck under the helmet for so long, but he could see much better. He was getting a combination of deja vu from this person, as well as an eerie feeling from the surrounding region. "I'm guessing the temple got destroyed, too, huh?"

Ellery watched the armored man, especially when he removed his helmet in the most peculiar way. Suppose that was convenient Or maybe he was showing off. Like that would do him any good. As he got close enough to him, Ellery was just able to make out the question made out to him. He glanced back at the ruins of the temple, expression a bit grim. "Appears that way," he replied simply. "Not really anything left of it. This war is just getting ridiculous." Ellery looked back at the red head near him. "Anyway, if that's all you needed, I need to get going."

He looked at the wreckage with a dour expression, seeing it was almost completely leveled flat from the battle or battles that took place here. "Why all this destruction for a pointless war...?" This person really looked familiar, but he couldn't place his finger on it. He turned to him and spoke out loud to cover the distance he was gaining. "Does the name Parish mean anything to you?" He waited a moment to see if that sunk in.

Ellery stopped as the red head once more asked him a question, despite him making it clear that he was leaving. Sighing slightly, he turned back towards the man, a bit irritated. "It.... sounds familiar," he replied simply, not really raising his voice. He didn't much care if he heard him. The man could come closer if he couldn't hear, after all.

He walked closer to him, having almost figured out who it was. His eyes took a snapshot of the young man, and processed it. Does it look like anyone from the past? His memories flashed by, trying to figure out a name to match the face. "El-Elroy? Eldridge...ELLERY! Is that it? It's me, Matt!" The confusion turned into growing excitement, hoping very much for the memories not to have played him for a fool, or this would result in a very awkward, well more akward, encounter.

Ellery instinctively took a few steps back as the red head moved closer towards him. Something about him just made him wary, stand on edge. That feeling was even more deepened once the man spouted out his very own name, even if it did take him a few tries. Still, it made him suspicious. Why would this person know his name.... He didn't even recognize the man. Yet, instead of being scared, Ellery was irritated. "Yes, my name is Ellery," he replied with a scowl. "My only question is why the hell do you know that." Ellery raised a hand and pointed a finger at the man, who's name was apparently 'Matt'. "Answer me." It's not like he was anyone special. He lived alone in the woods, in a house he built himself. He only ventured into town on the rare occasion he needed supplies. So why, why does this man know who he is.

So he didn't recognize him, damn. The smile went away some, but he was right about who it was. "Straight to the point as always, Ellery. We haven't seen each other in, how long was it, 10 years? Been a long time, that's for sure. Just glad to see the war hasn't wiped you out. You were always my favorite cousin, though I can't seem to remember why..." He placed his index finger and thumb against his chin, looking to the side and down, trying to remember. "Maybe if I tag along with you it'll click. Not like I have anywhere I need to go. I won't even charge for any of my services." He smiled, kind of knowing he was forcing himself on Ellery. He figured he'd be resistant, but it had been so long since he'd seen...anything close to resembling a friendly face.
