What's with the * Vegan??

I'm curious about it. I see people type Veg*n or Veg___ism or Veg***ism. This may sound kind of newbish but...why do people do that?

Because at this guild we have both vegans and vegetarians. Both are shortened into one word, veg*n or whatever, to save time.
