Memorizing Bible verses is definitely important because The Holy Bible is a useful tool for witnessing to others when we may not have our Holy Bible with us. Although, we should make it habit to have our Holy Bible always close, we need to know where these verses can be found and if we can recite them from memory or write them down for somebody else then it works. If we're in a situation where we feel troubled, we can recite Bible verses from memory when we aren't able to read our Bible such when we may be driving a car, or doing another activity that requires focus and and no distractions.
One day, perhaps if we go blind, we will be able to recite Bible verses and perhaps be able to find audio recordings or a Braille (sp?) Bible. I also consider the possibility of Bibles not being widely available such as a Book of Eli type of scenario. Memorizing the Bible one day could be more than a useful tool and crucial to our lives as believers. Not that it's going to happen, but I consider possibilities and the importance of memorizing scripture.
Here are a couple websites that have tips for scripture memorizing and what it can do for us:

Some people like to memorize a lot of scripture - such as a new verse every day. Some go back and forth between a few verses. Some spend a few days to a week on one verse.
Here is a verse to memorize for these next two weeks (feel free to memorize more if you have this one down)! Also, feel free to use a different Bible version if you prefer:
John 3:16 - 17 NIV:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
