This is an idea that had been suggested for a more interactive experience and keeping people in touch with God so I figured I would try it out.

Every two weeks, I will post a Bible passage up here that will be relatively short, only a few verses.

Once you finish reading the passage, return back to this thread in the Bible Study sub-forum and write a little bit on what you got out of that passage. It could be a thought that came into your mind as you read it, you can summarize the Bible passage, you can do in-depth research of the passage and put that in your post, etc. The point is for everyone to all offer feedback on what they read in their own way.

I feel this is a good way for us to share our knowledge and wisdom with others as well as keep in touch with God's word and to keep a close relationship with Him. It's greatly appreciated to those who wish to participate because I can see this once suggestion becoming a great experience for the guild!

This Bible Passage Study Challenge, we will be reading:

David and Goliath: 1 Samuel 17 (feel free to use any Bible version you choose)

My thoughts on this passage:

It truly amazes me how David at his age and height going up against a giant such as Goliath. Goliath considering his size would probably be intimidating to many people, especially considering he was armed.

David being a shepherd all of his life and his weapon being a rock and a sling, I'm sure he had accuracy with it if he used it to chase off animals threatening the flock he was watching over. Also, God was with David that day. It truly shows that anything is possible through God.

I sometimes think, "What would it have been like to be standing there and witnessing this amazing account? Seeing a young boy go up against a giant and be able to slay him."

Ha! It's funny that you should post this. The youth church lesson for today was on David and Goliath. A lot of my students complain that they knew this story already, but today I impressed it upon the students that unlike King Saul, who the people of Israel chose because he was tall and handsome, David was a man after God's own heart. God cares more about your inward heart and motives than he does your appearance. Saul didn't believe that David could defeat the giant, and neither did his brothers. God believes in us, and that's something that we all can apply to our lives.

And on another note, when you compare David and Saul, you really get to see who saw God as first in their lives. Saul started out humble, but once he offered the unlawful sacrifice, and did things his own way, God removed him and put David in charge. Likewise, David, even though Saul pursued him and he had years of trouble, God was still his number one (granted, David did take Bathsheba from Uriah, which was a sin, but he did repent and nonetheless God was his focus).

I love this story, and it's a fantastic first Bible-read.

Even though I knew David would win, I knew why it was. Because he said he could do it because of the Lord. My Bible-study group was talking about some stories off the news. One of them was about a gang-member who was going to be killed for some reason, and his father had the other members over for dinner and said, "By the power of Christ, you're not going to kill my son", and the gang members all laughed at that. On the news, it said that every one of them died of unknown causes.

It makes me feel powerful, knowing that we can do anything as long as God supports it and we do it in His name. Though, it also scares me because we hear stories, fiction and nonfiction, about how power corrupts, and I wouldn't ever want that to happen to me. And I especially wouldn't want to try to use that power on some are where God didn't want me to. You know? It's like, great power comes great responsibility, but Christians have it because we're in God's VIP club. We get special privileges. Whenever I put it in perspective like that, it makes me feel special and wanted, and I think that's how He wants us to feel.

Indeed, God wants us to feel wanted because God wants us and He wants us to want Him. In our fallen state, it's pretty impossible to want God as much as we should want Him. But thanks be to God that the Holy Spirit and Jesus Himself intercedes on our behalf to help us to want Him more. When you look at David, it's because He had a heart, love, and want to know God more that he was able to get so much power.

And how awesome it is to know that we serve a loving God! Not a tyrannical God who doesn't care about us, but a God who wants a personal relationship with us, and a God who wants us to enjoy all the freedoms we can and to work side by side with us. It's a wonderful thing!
