Aurora Jean Stevens

Aurora had spent Midterm Break at home with her father. It had been a rather... bittersweet experience, all in all. Sure, it had been good to see her father again, but a number of things kept it from being a good visit. The main reason was that Midterm break had fallen on the one year anniversary of Aurora's mother's death. The other reason? Aurora couldn't help but feel as if her father was keeping something from her. Something big. She just couldn't tell what... not without using a skill of hers that she didn't really know how to control.

The night before school resumed, Aurora said goodbye to her father and tempted him to tell her what was on his mind. He didn't, however, so she left, making the hour long drive back to school. All along the way, she could feel the familiar feeling of someone watching her. Sure, most people would think that she was paranoid, driving alone late at night, thinking that someone was watching her. But it was more than that random feeling and, when you turn around to check, it's gone. It was so much more than than that. She could search every inch of wherever she was and Aurora would never find the source that was making her feel as if she was being watched. It was like the item was invisible... or in her head. Funny, all things considering.

When Aurora got back to school, she was quick to make it to her dorm and quick to fall asleep.

The next morning, Aurora woke up, doing the familiar morning ritual of getting ready for classes. She got dressed, applied make up, made sure her books were in her bag, ate breakfast, all the normal things that one would do. She was a morning person... and an evening person... and a middle of the day person. As long as she got some sleep, she would be more than awake any time of the day. Perfect for a socialite. Fairly annoying for a regular student, yeah.

When Aurora finally made it to the classroom, she could see the previous class just starting to leave the classroom. She waited until everyone was out, including the teacher of that period, then walked in, finding her normal seat near the back. Sure, she had perfect grades, but that was due to her photographic memory, something she didn't understand given that neither of her parents were good at memorizing things whatsoever. And, yes, she could have used some of her... uncontrollable abilities, but why would she risk reading a teacher's mind and not being able to control it when she had a wonderfully working memory already. But, trying not to think too much about that, Aurora sat down in the seat, awaiting the beginning of class.

((Ooc: Biological mother had a photographic memory. A little bit of writer's knowledge, not character knowledge)

I'm no ordinary tech-head...

&&

A dream may be a wish your heart makes...

Midterm break had meant nothing to Damian, except that he spent more time “tinkering” and “repairing” computers and other technological devices than he did while school was in session. In reality, he was hacking into the computers, fixing them with a wave of his hand, and deleting any trace of him ever being inside them while still getting the information. How, well, he had certain abilities, abilities he had discovered as a child that led to him being where he was now. He was a technomancer, as he enjoyed calling himself, a wizard with control over technology.

It had been late in the evening, his Gameboy Advance SP was almost out of power and one of the older boys in the group home had stolen his charger for their own, once again. He had only been there about a year, and at the age of nine, was extremely anti-social. He preferred his video games to human contact, and yet, when he did interact with other people, he was a very charming young boy. Damian was also a little on the rebellious side, which was the reason to the older boys stealing his things, they wanted revenge for what he had done to them. He had gotten their chargers taken away, leaving him the only one with one. It had required a lot of smooth talking from Damian to get them taken away, but he did it, little did he know that was the start of a war.

That had been just after he moved in, and still, over a year later they were stealing his charger, despite having received theirs back after a month without them. Damian was just about to face the final boss and could no longer save the game, and yet the device was going to die if he did not find his charger. Just before it died, and after searching for as long as he could stand, before he just broke down and yelled at the small device, begging it to stay alive, and oddly enough, it did so. He did notice that the calmer he was the steadier the green light on the device was, thus he calmed down, and just continued to play, the other boys, afraid of what he might do to their devices, seeing as he had obviously tinkered with his own, returned his charger.

As he aged, well Damian continued to use and harness his powers over technology, realizing that if he talked to the device or devices that he was trying to use or manipulate, that they would work better, and eventually he learned to communicate with them. This scared the other boys, and when Damian was fifteen, they forced him out of the group home, which he did not mind all too much, considering he had been making plans to run away, the other boys simply running him out a few days ahead of schedule.

His first act on his own was more complex than he ever made it out to be, he robbed an ATM, without anyone seeing him. He had stalked the area where the ATM was, for a few days, eventually figuring out how to break the security camera. That took another one of his abilities, a developing one that allowed him to create things out of scrap metal and parts and control them with his magic as he did everything else. What took down the security camera near the ATM was simply a ball of wires and metals that he had found and fused together until he could control it. Then he talked the machine into giving him as much money as possible, before he ran off, and from there on out, he made a living for himself, his own way. At sixteen, he got a job and an apartment, and the rest is history.

Damian sighed as the history of how he came to be where he was flooded back to him. He still had that Gameboy Advance SP, despite everything, and he carried it with him, everywhere he went, no matter what. It was his pride and joy, his best friend, more important to him than his cell phone and his computer put together. It was a piece of who he was, it was his signature, sort of, but most of all, it was the starter to how he became who he was.

It was the first day back to classes after the break and Damian had no intention of being late, even though he was a laid back sort of person, he knew that the new student teacher would make a fool of him should he walk in late. Thus, he had waked early, dressed quickly, and headed to breakfast at the campus diner.

Now he was walking into class, looking around for a few moments before deciding that he would take his usual seat in the back of class, instead of taking someone else’s seat near the middle. He was a great student, not too overly smart, but he knew enough, and what he did not know, he could easily find out. The girl next to him, yeah, he knew she was smart, though why she sat in the back, he figured he would never find out, because he was too into his technology and she seemed the type to be too into her own head.

&&------&&
It was her first day as a student teacher, was she nervous, no, not necessarily. However, the fact that she had spent the entire night helping the younger kids at the Institute fall asleep and stay that way, for they were up most of the night complaining about having to go back to school in the morning, did not help the way she was feeling. A sigh escaped her lips as she parked her motorcycle, happy that Ororo had finally bought Logan one of his own so that he would stop stealing hers. She could feel people day-dreaming all around her, but she could also sense dreaming, and she wished, ever so much, to be dreaming right alongside whoever it was, because, the subconscious mind was a much better place than the real world.

Walking through campus, Aisling held her head high, happy that someone, long ago, had invented concealing make-up, because if not, no one would take her serious because of the bags under her eyes. Many people waved at her as she passed and she waved back, but her mind was on one thing and one thing only, getting to and through her Intro to psych class, because if she could make it through her first one, the rest would be easy.

As she arrived at the classroom, she checked her watch, fifteen until class started, just on time. She sauntered in, giving a smirk to anyone who happened to look her way, including Damian. Oh, she was familiar with Damian. She knew he was a procrastinator, but a good student, and that he loved fiddling around with technology, even during class. She figured it was a nervous tick, but eh, who ever knew with people nowadays, Aisling sure did not.

The fifteen minutes passed rather quickly, and Aisling took her place behind the pedestal at the front of the class. She leaned against it as the last of the students trickled in, a smirk on her face. “Okay, so, most of you know why you are here. If you do not, you are likely in the wrong class. For those of you who forgot, this is Intro to psych. For those of you who slept through most of last semester, no, I am not the regular professor, I am a student teacher, and honestly, if you fail, I fail, and I will find you, so do not fail. Anyway, moving on, I am Aisling Heffernan, call me Miss Lin or Miss H, you call me anything close to Miss Heifer and I will make your life a living Hell,” at this there were many audible chuckles, a few gasps, and noise started up for a bit. She waited until it settled to start up again. “Now, I will be unlike any other teacher, or student-teacher you have ever had, that I can promise you. If you have an issue with me, come to me, I will only have an issue with you if you do one of the things previously mentioned, or, when having an issue with me, do not come and see me. Now, I need a volunteer, someone…you! Blondie, in the back, next to tech-head,” at this Damian’s face raised from his laptop, which he had already halfway taken apart, an eyebrow raised at Aisling, who smirk. “Oh, so you do respond to ‘tech-head’? This is good to know Mr. Felix, I will certainly have to use that from now on,” she told him, earning a chuckle from the rest of the class. Damian however hung his head, embarrassed that he had been picked on by Aisling, he thought he would have been safe, after getting to class on time, he supposed he was wrong.

Aurora Jean Stevens

Aurora had just taken out her textbook as the rest of the students came in and she merely opened it up, peering out of the top of the book to look at each one. Sure, she wasn't shy or anything. She could hold a conversation or party like a pro, but recently, she found that it was easier not to get too involved in a personal life. There was less of a chance of anything going wrong... not in the normal sprained ankle type of thing. She'd kill for a normal issue, actually. Hers typically dealt with accidentally mentally shoving someone across a room... or accidentally relaying to someone word for word what was going on in their head. It was quite annoying, really.

When at last the teacher, rather the student teacher, walked in, Aurora put down the book. It wasn't needed anyway. She had read it already, and... well, she only needed to read it once.

Aurora kept fairly decent attention as the student teacher, who she now knew was named Aisling Heffernan, began to speak. Sure, she knew the whole routine with student teachers. If the class didn't do well, that meant that it was their fault... moreso than the actual teacher. Well, at least they didn't have to worry about her... unless she was one of those rare teachers who never took the test from the book. She wondered a moment about that until she heard Miss Lin call on a 'blondie in the back next to the tech-head'. She scoffed slightly, rather amused. Sure, she hadn't watched as Damian sat down beside her, but it wasn't any shocker that he would be called a tech-head. He always was taking apart or putting together something.

After the class calmed down, Aurora looked to Miss Lin, and said, "Aurora." Sure, she was perfectly fine with people creating nicknames as they saw fit, but most teachers didn't do that. Most teachers called students by their names, after all. And she didn't really feel like being called 'blondie' the rest of the semester.

Aisling looked at Aurora, a smirk on her face when the girl introduced herself. “Oh, good, you do have a name, I was afraid ‘Blondie’ was your name, and then I would have to come up with nicknames for every other blond person in this room,” Aisling said, ignoring the fact that she would end up making nicknames for most of them anyway. She walked from behind the pedestal and over to where she had set her bag down when she came in earlier. From within the bag she pulled a piece of paper, looked at it for a moment and returned to the pedestal with it in hand. “Okay, Aurora, I have a few questions for ya. They are simple, somewhat personal questions, but do not fret, if you do not have an answer, or do not feel like giving one, I surely have one,” she said leaning against the pedestal for a moment or two.

“Class, I am going to be speaking today on Freudian Dream Theory, but, because I personally hate lectures, I am going to use Aurora here, and her dreams as the best way to explain it all to you,” she said to the class, earning her a few, or rather, many raised eyebrows.

Turning to Aurora, she smiled as sweetly as possible, but honestly, it just made her look creepy. “Now, Aurora, the first question is simple and will determine if I need to bring up a different volunteer. Do you remember your dreams? If you feel uncomfortable at any time, all you have to do is tell me and I will bring someone else up, so be honest with me,” Aisling said, hoping that the young woman would feel at ease enough around her, and the class, to be honest and stay up there. If not, she would likely bring Damian down, because, per usual, he was tinkering away with his computer, which he had rebuilt and was taking apart again.

&&------&&
As if knowing that someone was looking at him, Damian looked up, just to find Aisling’s eyes on him. He gave a weak smile and she smirked at him, before giving him a look that said ‘put it up’. Upon seeing Aisling’s face, Damian put his tools back in his bag, along with his partially put back together computer. He found it strange that she always seemed to have eyes on him, but then, many teachers knew he did not pay attention in class as much as he should, many students knew this as well, so he figured that he should not have been surprised, and yet he was. There was something off about Aisling, something strange, but he just could not pinpoint what.

Aurora looked around the class when Miss Lin said that she was going to speak of the Freudian Dream Theory today... mostly because she immediately knew what they were going to ask her. She was going to have to explain her dreams. She really had no intention on being analyzed by Freud's theories, truth be told. How would she begin to explain that there was a completely logical explanation that, sometimes, because of a supernatural curse she had, she delved into other people's minds while she was asleep. How she could tell someone exactly what they were going to say before they said it if she really wanted. There was no way to explain that to someone, was there? And, anyway, if she did that, she'd probably be locked up in the nut house for telling someone she could really do such things. Granted, if she focused enough, she might be able to change the people's mind... but that was beside the fact, and she certainly had never tried that before. She wasn't sure the extent of her power... or curse, like how she often thought of it.

But, when the question finally came out as to whether or not she remembered her dreams, she shook her head. Quite honestly, it was never her dreams that she remembered. She could remember everything that she found out while sleeping when she sunk into someone's mind, but she couldn't ever remember her legitimate dreams. "Sorry, I rarely, if ever, remember my dreams," she said. It wasn't her fault that her head was often too busy looking into others' heads... right?

Aurora was quite honestly glad to be out of the spotlight. This teacher looked like someone who liked to get under other's skin... and that was the last thing she needed. She didn't want to get too upset and loose her limited control over her power. That would cause chaos... if nothing else.

Aisling sighed when she heard that Aurora said that she did not remember her dreams. “Well, that was a bust. Need a new volunteer, how about-” she trailed off and looked around the classroom before pointing to a student near the front who was about to nod off. “-You, Sleepy Head, come here!” she practically yelled, and the student, a brunet male with hazel eyes practically jumped out of his seat. He hurried to the front as Aisling turned to Aurora. “Well, you can return to your seat, make sure to keep Tech Head paying attention, will ya?” she instructed as she looked at the male that was coming forward. He was scrawny and tall, his skin an odd pale color, and it made Aisling wonder if he only left his house or dorm to attend classes.
&&------&&
Meanwhile, Damian was playing with his cell phone. He was pretending to text, when in reality, he was messing with the data on the phone, deleting texts and pictures and other such things, as well as downloading new apps for it. He did so without even looking at the phone, simply pretending to move his fingers over the screen as if he was texting. Of course, if anyone actually managed to look over his shoulder one would realize he was not texting, but would not be able to figure out what he was doing. That is what he liked, about his abilities and his phone; it looked like he was playing a game when he was messing with the data.

A smile crossed his face, before he set his phone down and, with some concentration, set off just about every phone in the place at once, beside his phone. This caused everyone in the room to pull out their phones and stare at them confused, and Aisling stopped, mid sentence, as she pulled her own phone out. She looked around the room, her eyes landing on Damian for a while, before she shook her head and turned the phone off. Damian raised an eyebrow and looked around as if confused to what was going on. He looked the part of the confused, innocent student, but if anyone could read his mind, they would find that he was laughing, a lot.

Aurora nodded and returned to her seat, hoping that nothing major happened in the class. The last thing she needed to do was let someone know that she could get into their heads. If anyone even began to think that, she'd surely be locked up in some mental ward of some hospital for the rest of her life... and she certainly didn't need that.

It was probably, oh, about halfway through the class that Aurora could feel herself slipping into a light doze, her eyes still open, her mind still... more or less on the class. Enough that her photographic memory could take care of it, that was. But it was far enough into the doze that she could slip into people's minds.

And that was when she saw it. After first, she was confused, all the strange things she had never seen in a mind before, full of information on technology that surely no college student could have. She looked around a moment, trying to figure out whose mind she had slipped into, her mind fully out of the doze she had been in a moment before. And that was when the phones went off. But, instead of going toward her phone, her head went toward Damien, looking at him. She could hear him laughing, despite seeing with her own eyes that he appeared to be so confused. She forced herself out of his mind, but her eyes narrowed, trying to figure out what was going on with him, why he would have had the knowledge of how to do what he had done.

Damian looked around one last time, his eyes landing on Aurora who was looking at him with narrowed eyes, as if she knew he had done something wrong. That was impossible, no one could have possibly known he had been the one to set the phones off, unless they could read minds, but that was a silly idea. Except it really was not a silly idea, but he raised an eyebrow at her and was about to speak when he heard Aisling’s voice from the front of the room. “Well, that is all for today, read up on Freudian Dream Theory and be ready to answer some questions next class. Class is dismissed!” There was, at that moment, a loud rustle and the sound of feet, as students began to pack their things and leave. Damian, knowing that he did not have another class for an hour or so, turned to pack up, collecting the electronics and tools that were strewn across his desk on top of papers and other things that he should have been using to take notes.

On the very edge of the desk sat a tape recorder, and Damian quickly hit the stop button before placing it carefully in a special pocket in his bag. He then finished collecting his things and stood, slinging his bag over his shoulder. He gave one last look at Aurora before heading out of the class, his mind still wondering why she had been looking at him instead of her phone.

&&------&&
Aisling watched the students leave, slowly gathering her own things. Her mind was wandering, mostly to what she was going to do that night, whether she was going to get to sleep, or if the children at the mansion were going to require sleep inducement again. She was tempted not to return to the mansion, she had her motorcycle, she could ride anywhere and just spend the night in a hotel or something, but she had things to do at the mansion, responsibilities, and she knew she could never skimp on them, even if she wanted to.

Aurora watched Damian for a moment or so after Miss Lin dismissed them before collecting her things. She was confused about him, mostly because she didn't understand the things that had been going on in his head. Sure, she was smart, and she had a photographic memory, but she had never seen the inside of someone's head that could manipulate technology... at least, that was her guess.

Honestly, Aurora felt rather intrigued by this, the fact that someone, other than her, had a gift. Well, in her case, she felt it was more of a curse... except for right now. She felt especially privileged to know that she was not the only freak out there.

So, once Damian started packing his things, Aurora finally looked away, putting her things into her bag and standing up, flinging her bag over her shoulder. She started on her way out of the classroom, unsure what to do. She had only one more class period today, but that was not for another few hours. And she had already done to reading over the summer... so she was set on that. Maybe she'd go find some television to watch some pointless show on.

Damian made his way to the student lounge on campus, because his next class was not until much later, but because he knew he would over sleep and miss the class, should he go back to his dorm, he decided it would be best to get started on the homework Aisling had assigned, even if he figured it would make him fall asleep. A sigh escaped his lips as he made his way into the lounge and took a seat at a table in the far back corner. He set up his computer and pulled out his book, planning on actually reading the section, because if he was called on in class next time, he would be able to answer a question and not look like he was blowing everything off.
&&------&&
Aisling watched everyone leave, and as the last student left she headed out, following Aurora, trying her hardest not to make it seem as if she was following her. However, as more students moved away, and Aisling got closer, it was becoming blatantly obvious that she was. Thus, Aisling started at a jog and caught up with Aurora, a smile on her face. “Hey, did you enjoy the class? I didn’t mess things up too much did I?” Aisling honestly questioned, because she really was worried about how well she had done. However, in the back of her mind she was worrying about who set off all the phones, and what she was going to do about the kids back at the mansion. If anyone were to read her mind, they would likely find themselves in a state of worry and confusion, just like Aisling.

Aurora was walking around, mostly thinking whether or not she should go to Damian and ask him what he had been doing in class to set off all of those cellphones. It seemed impossible, but she knew that it was Damian who had done it... she just didn't know how. She supposed it could be that he was some sort of super genius, but she didn't think it was that simple.

And then she noticed someone starting to walk up to her. She looked to them, to see Miss Aisling there. When she asked Aurora if the class went well, she smiled, and said, "You did perfectly fine, Professor. No reason to worry." Sure, she hadn't really gone into her mind. But she, through her experience with reading minds, had learned how to read a person's face, get the emotions. And she definitely appeared to be worried. For what? Aurora assumed that she would have to go into her mind to figure that out, though.

I'm no ordinary tech-head...

A dream may be a wish your heart makes...

Aisling stuffed her hands into the pocket of her jeans, looking up at the sky with a sigh. Was it that obvious that she was worried? Probably, she always had a way of living with her feelings on her sleeve, where anyone could read them, if they looked close enough, and after not sleeping, she often allowed her defenses to drop, more so than usual. “Thanks, and you do not have to call me Professor, we are out of class and I am just another student, unfortunately. My friends call me Lin, a few of them call me Ace, but I prefer Lin. You’re Aurora Stevens, right, I have heard about you, only good things of course. You enjoy reading, from what I have observed, and you are more curious about how people react to things than the events themselves. I noticed that in class today when all the phones were going off, you looked around before checking your phone, and not after. Of course, do not think I am blaming you for what happened in class, freak accident is what that was, but I mean, I could be wrong about you completely. I know I was wrong about, well, I was wrong about someone that is now rather close to me, even if he is a pain in my a**,” Aisling said with a chuckle, remembering her first impression of Logan.

He had been having one of his fits, yelling and swearing, all around being an a**. Aisling had walked into the mansion right in the middle of it and he almost hit her square in the jaw, he broke a few of her teeth, and dislocated her jaw, but that was all. She immediately put him to sleep, and the nightmare she sent him into was the most horrific thing Aisling had ever seen, or felt, before, and she pulled them both out of it before either of their psyches were damaged, any more, anyway. From that point on, Aisling viewed the man in a new light, sure, he was still an a**, and not all of his actions were justified, but most of them were, and the rest were excusable through other means, usually. A while after the incident, and Ororo had bought Logan his own bike, the two set out on a bike trip to see the continent, well, the northern part of it, anyway. They roamed through Canada, visiting places from Logan’s past that he rarely remembered. They also visited Europe, went to some places there, because, with the help of Aisling, working off what Charles Xavier had started, Logan was beginning to remember his past, before Alkali Lake.

Damian sat in the student lounge, trying his hardest to pay attention, but there were so many electronics around him, and he just wanted to delve into their hard drives, mess around with them. However, he forced himself to focus; he had more self-control than this, he knew that, and he needed to express it. Thus, he plugged in his headphones and began blasting music as he worked on his work. It worked, because he could focus on the reading while still having some sort of electronic impulse close to him.

...but I can change that dream faster than your heart can.
