How to Play Fortune's Tower
Overview
Fortune's Tower is a game of pressing your luck, played with a unique deck of cards. A deck contains mostly number cards, ranked from 1 to 7, plus four "Hero" cards. The smallest decks contain eight of each card ranked 1 through 7. Larger decks may contain nine or even ten sets of each number card, plus four Heroes. The object of the game is to accept an offer (totaled from the dealt cards) that is larger than your bet.
Betting
Place a bet to start the game. In the smaller betting limit games, you must be 15 gold, or some multiple of 15 gold, but this can range up to 2000 gold bets in the Diamond decks.
The Deal
You've you've set your bet, the dealer starts by dealing three cards. The first card is face-down, and is called the "Gate card." The next two cards are laid face-up over the bottom of the Gate card, and create the "second row." There can be as many as eight rows, if you play all the way to the bottom of the tower.
The Choice
On each row, you have a choice: you may take the dealer's offer, or deal another row. The dealer's offer is equal to the total value of cards in the row. For example, if the second row consisted of a 3 and a 6, the offer would be 9. At this point, you could cash out now for 9 gold, but if you had bet the minimum of 15, this would hardly be worth it, as you'd lose 6 gold! Instead, deal another row and hope for a higher value. In the third row, three cards are dealt and added up, generally resulting in a higher offer. Note, however, that this can often result in a vertical pair...
Vertical Pairs
A vertical pair occurs when a card on one row touches a card of the same rank on the previous row (as opposed to being neighbors on the same row, which is fine). Normally, a pair will cause "Misfortune," ending the game with a value of 0. However, the first time you catch a pair, the dealer will replace the card on the lower row with the Gate card (the card at the top of the pyramid). Note that, since there is only one Gate card, it can only save you from Misfortune once. After that, a vertical pair will end the game immediately.
In this case, the Hero card kept the vertical pair of 7s from ending the game.
Heroes
Heroes are worth 0 gold, but they keep you safe from pairs. If a Hero card appears in a row, it protects the entire row from Misfortune. Heroes can even protect your Gate card.
The Choice, Part 2
On any row, you can take the dealer's offer instead of dealing another row. Strategically, you should always cash out when you think it's too risky to go on. For instance, if you cash out with an offer of 19, and you bet 15, you make a profit of 4 gold.
Sets
When an entire row matches, this is called a "set." A set gives you a bonus multiplier, depending on which row it appears, which remains in play until Misfortune is caused or you cash out. For instance, if you get a set in Row Three, you'll obtain a multiplier of x3, so if for example you drew three 4s in Row Three, you'd get an offer of 12 (3x4). Multipliers can go as high as x8.
Clear all eight rows without busting or using the Gate card and you'll get a mega-scoring Jackpot!
The Jackpot
If you can finish Row Eight without busting or using the Gate card, you win a Jackpot. The Jackpot pays the value of every card on the table, times your multiplier (if you have one).
Raising the Bet
You can bet in multiples of the minimum bet, up to the betting limit of the table. When you bet more, all of your wins are multiplied to match. In the 15 chip example, if you bet 45 gold (15x3), all of your wins will be x3.
