The makeup sponges should be ripped into pieces the size of the tip of your pinky finger. One piece for each color, this is to prevent mixing the colors. Make sure to pick away all flat surfaces and straight lines with your fingernails.
I like to start with the bright red color and from the center, being careful to leave room for the edge of the bruise, which needs space to fade away into the skin. Never drag the sponge across your skin, doing this will create clearly visible lines. Pat with the sponge instead.
The idea is to stay far away from lines and geometrical shapes, because they are easy to notice.
