So I know it's all historic and everything but I figured there's gotta be some story to follow. 2 didn't have much but the little background info before each level (which I found a bit hard to follow) and I know that some games have cutscenes but I still find it a bit confusing (BTW, I've only played 2, 3, and 6...). BTW, is each game actually a retelling or at random points in the story or whatever because I've noticed in some games, Shangxiang is just meeting Liu Bei or her father is dead in one game but alive in the next, etc.

Dynasty Warriors 2-5 does have those "'What if' battles", where you play as one character and go throughout each story.
DW6 just shortens them.
DW7... yes there's a storyline but there's also Conquest mode.
And what I've heard, DW8 will have those "What If" Battles again.
SO they might have some battles that retell some things, and change some things up when someone DOESN'T DIE.
But usually, there's the Warriors Orochi series, where DW and SW come together to face a demon. At least the WO series doesn't repeat the same storyline.
Dynasty Warriors usually revolves around the Three Kingdoms storyline, you can't really help it, unless Koei makes another side mode where they make a whole different story, but that's time-consuming.

But Musou Mode itself is like 'story mode' of the game, right? Aren't the 'what if's' the Challenge Modes and the other extras?

Musou mode is, in other words, "Story Mode" in every DW Game except Strikeforce and the other side games Koei Made. From playing DW5, Challenge mode is basically those mini games.
Conquest mode in DW7 something like a Free Mode.
If Dynasty Warriors won't show the story of the Three Kingdoms, it won't be DW overall.
That's why Koei made other games like Samurai Warriors and Warriors Orochi, etc.

And if you really really want to know the true story try to find an english version of Romance of The Three Kingdoms.. It will tell you what "really" went on... And it was so long ago so you will never really know how it went down but the book gives it to you well... And make time to read it its around 3700 pages long so ya lol biggrin
