hey-oo, back and posting for the first time in months! (don't worry, i'm not dead, lol.) i'm here asking, where does everyone get their inspiration?
i thought of this after coming back to gaia an hour ago. i write an anime review blog now and i'm in the midst of re-watching a series i saw about a year ago so i can write about it. the series, Ben-to, is all about fighting over discount supermarket Bentos, and i gotta say, some of the food they have in the show looks pretty damn mouthwatering. it's like you could reach into the computer and take a nice big bite of that Hokkaido-Style Fried Chicken or the Grilled Eel (seriously, after seeing this show i want to eat grilled eel).
then there's also the magazines i read now. one of them, Neo (a UK anime mag) reintroduced their Eat Japan article a couple issues ago, and the latest issue i have (i'm one issue behind) boasts Mushroom and Salmon Linguine as its recipe.
so i'm wondering, where have you gotten your recipes from? mostly the internet, or do you look in cookbooks and magazines, too? or maybe from anime? (seriously, check out Ben-to if you can, in between all the insane martial arts (do ALL asians know kung fu? according to this show, yes) there is some tasty-looking food.)

The Internet! There are books on bentos available locally here in Malaysia, but most of the time they lack quality, both in terms of nutrition and decoration designs. ^_^"

how appropriate that the one day i'm taking a bento somewhere with me this thread gets a post! ^^
still, locally available is awesome, nutritious or not! surely they must influence you somewhere along the line? :0

I would definitely have to say the internet is a large chunk of my inspiration. A lot of the time I just check on my favorite blogs, YouTube channels, etc to see what they're doing and sometimes what they've made sparks an idea for something else.
I also have to say I get inspired by thinking of other cultures. The best way for me to decide exactly how I want to design or redress a dish is to decide "where" I'm in the mood for. I would love to eventually have the knowledge to be able to take one dish, but translate it a different way by cooking it... I dunno Hawaiian bbq style with Vietnamese flavoring (which I currently envision to be cilantro+lime+peanuts and maybe mint?) I dunno, this is a weird example but does my point come across?
Sparingly, I like to look at magazines and see if a certain ingredient or method of cooking is trending.

yeah, i get your message. like how you can make indian-style chicken with italian spices or something. if you make a particular dish till you know it by heart, it's easier to experiment with it.
related to the other cultures idea, i sometimes like to adapt other recipes for bento use. i used to make up apple pie filling and take it as a dessert, it was goopy so it leaked sometimes but otherwise sooo gooood :9~~
