Now then, here is the breakdown to know what Rank you need for a certain lengths of music. This will also explain to why the songs in the Sub-Forums are ranked how they are as well.
*Note: When you reach Rank 9 and do composing there starts to be chances that your scroll will hold a magical effect to it. Those percents will be explained in next post.*

Okay! As of Rank 9 when you compose music there starts to be chances that you will have an added ability to your musical scroll that will activate when you or another plays it with the Play Instrument skill. Below are the listed percent chances you have of having a random ability added to your music:
Now then, these additions to the scrolls could be something such as +Intelligence or +Will or +Luck or so on and so forth. It is randomly generated so there is no telling what you may get less you get something during your composing and it shows up after you have finished your composure. cat_3nodding

Tips and Tricks Gathering Books to Level Up Composure Skill Okay! So here is where I'll be posting up info and tricks learned to earning the books or getting to them to raise your rank of your compose skill. There's at least 2 tricks I learned of a couple months ago or month ago.....anyways, there's tricks to getting into some secret shops when needed and here is where the breakdown begins for helping you get those precious books. cat_blaugh Getting The Skill:
=Now to gain the skill you will need to see 1 of 4 NPC's. The 4 that are selling the book are as follows:
=~= Nele who is located around the fountain in Emain Macha selling Introduction to Music Composition for about 500 Gold. This book will teach you the skill for you to start learning it.
=~= Aeira who is located in an ally in Dunbarton selling Introduction to Music Composition for about 500 Gold also.
=~= Yvona who is located at the Bard Camp along the Abb Neagh path that connects Dunbarton to Taillteann. She sells Introduction to Music Composition for also about 500 Gold.
=~= Briana who is located in Rath Royal Castle located in the mighty city of Tara. She is located on the Second Floor in the Music Room. She too is selling Introduction to Music Composition for about 500 Gold.
Who you pick is up to you and where your location is and to who would be closer and what quests you have going on to see what town or city would be best to visit. cat_3nodding Now once you have bought the book Introduction to Music Composition read it and you will have gained knowledge about the Compose Skill. Then it simply is to try composing a tune twice, can be anything as it does not really matter since your character limit is so low. Once it is trained up and says it's ready to be advanced or learned simply click Learn and tada! You now have the Compose Skill! cat_biggrin (P.S. it cost you 0 AP to learn the Compose Skill)
cat_blaugh Next to bring your Compose Skill from Rank F up to Rank E you will need to buy the book Improving Your Composing Skill which is sold at the 4 NPC's shops that were listed above that you had bought your first book from. cat_3nodding Below now are the prices of each seller as their location stays the same:
=~= Nele selling Improving Your Composing Skill for about 2,500 Gold.
=~= Aeira selling Improving Your Composing Skill for about 2,500 Gold.
=~= Yvona selling Improving Your Composing Skill for about 2,500 Gold.
=~= Briana selling Improving Your Composing Skill for about 2,500 Gold.
Once you have bought the book and it says its ready to be advanced simply click Advance and it will go up to Rank E. cat_3nodding Oh, a note. It will cost you 3 AP to advance it from Rank F to Rank E.
cat_blaugh Now that you have Rank E Compose Skill you will need to purchase the book Composition Lessons with Helene (1) to bring that skill right up to Rank D. The same 4 NPC's as listed above also sell Composition Lessons with Helene (1) so listed below are their prices:
=~= Nele selling Composition Lessons with Helene (1) for about 7,100 Gold.
=~= Aeira selling Composition Lessons with Helene (1) for about 7,100 Gold.
=~= Yvona selling Composition Lessons with Helene (1) for about 7,100 Gold.
=~= Briana selling Composition Lessons with Helene (1) for about 7,100 Gold.
Once you have bought the book and read it you'll be able to raise the Rank of your Compose Skill from Rank E to Rank D. This will cost 3 AP to do so. cat_3nodding
cat_blaugh Okay! Now this is where it gets interesting. You will need the book What is an Ensemble? to raise your Rank D Compose Skill to Rank C. Also I recommend having at least 55,000 Gold on them as there is a total of 4 books you will have to buy. Now I will keep this simple as can.
=There are a total of 4 books in Nele's Secret Shop you will need to access in order to take your Compose Skill all way from Rank D to Rank 9. I recommend purchasing all the books once you are in his secret shop less you want to go through the process again to buy the books you didn't or couldn't buy. It will come to about 53,000 Gold but I say have 55,000 Gold to 60,000 Gold on you and have 8 squares open for the 4 books. (as all books take 2 squares one on top of the other)
=~= Now then, to begin with this is what I did as it was quicker and saved me from spending extra gold. Now I used Likeability Potions which can be bought with Stars when you do Rafting. (takes place in Iria at the La Terra Highlands and costs about 42 Stars) It took me about 6 Likeability Potions till I was able to get into Nele's Secret Shop.
=*= First Step: Have at least 25 Likeability Potions, I say to be safe before you go speak to Nele. You earn them by using Stars you earn while killing Goblins during rafting solo or in a party.
=*= When you have about 25 Likeability Potions go to Nele. Now to start the process you will want to pick up 1 Likeability Potion and Give It to Nele by putting it over his character and clicking then click OK to giving it to him.
=*= Once you have gave him 1 Likeability Potion click on Nele and if you get from him when the book comes up (Nele is really giving me a friendly vibe.) then Click Personal Story. BUT if you get the words (Nele is giving me a look that it may be better to stop this conversation.) then just End Conversation. Do NOT click on anything in the book on the right. If you do it will reset the Likeability Points to 0 and it will be as though starting from scratch.
=*= Now if you got (Nele is really giving me a friendly vibe.) then you want to click Personal Story. After that you will want to click Nearby Rumors. After you have clicked on them both you will want to End Conversation.
=*= Next select 1 Likeability Potion from your Inventory and Give It to Nele. Once you have you will Click on Nele to start speaking with him. Again, if you get (Nele is giving me a look that it may be better to stop this conversation.) then just End Conversation without clicking Personal Story or Nearby Rumors or anything. If you get (Nele is really giving me a friendly vibe.) then Speak to him about Private Story then Nearby Rumors.
=*= After speaking about both to Nele you will End Conversation. After that take 1 Likeability Potion, Give It to him, and speak to him. You will have to repeat this process carefully and I say again, if the message (Nele is giving me a look that it may be better to stop this conversation.) then simply End Conversation without having a conversation with him or your Likeability Points will reset to 0 as if you had never attempted to gain his deeper trust in order to access his Secret Shop.
=*= This process could take a total of 6 Likeability Potions like it did for me or it could take up to 10 Likeability Potions like it did for my friend. It could take more or less than 6 to 10. It varies for each person and depends on what mood Nele is in, so to speak. But there is a key phrase you want to watch for as it means you are close to opening his Secret Shop.
=*= In the dance of Likeability Potion, Conversation, repeat, if you get the phrase "I was wondering whether you would come or not...And here you are! Hahaha..." that means you are close to getting into his shop if this phrase shows when you click Start Conversation before the book on the right appears. Now not always will it means you have it is just a sign you are close or you have depending if you have given him enough Likeability Potions.
=*= In the same time you get the phrase just listed above before the book comes up and it says (Nele is really giving me a good vibe.) then click Private Story. Now the key phrase to watch for here with Private Story is as follows: "For some reason, whenever I talk to you, Player's Name, you remind me of this girl... who'd left me a long time ago. She was very nice and easygoing just like you.” “Hmm….” “Hehe, I think I just caught a cold. Why do I keep getting a lump in my throat?”
=*= If you get the phrase above for Private Story then cross your fingers you get this next phrase when you click on Nearby Rumors as it will pretty much guarantee you can access the Secret Shop. If you get this phrase as follows for Nearby Rumors feel joyous: "The father of the Lord that used to lead this place a long time ago had two sons. One of his sons, when he was very young, left home to see the world.” “The current Lord is the son that remained…I wonder what happened to the one that had left…” “Who knows, he might be back in this town, disguised in his identity, and working at a bar or something…”
=*= If you get all 3 phrases listed above (yes some phrases are long and had pause so that is why there are ending quotes and starting quotes for the same conversation.) If you get all 3 then after you get the phrase listed for Nearby Rumors then click End Conversation.
=*= Finally after those 3 have appeared and you have ended your conversation with Nele you should be able to simply click Nele as normal, click Shop. Now if Nele says: "Hey, are you here to buy something from me again? Since you are here so often, Player Name, I feel like I have to show you something very special...Haha, take a look..." Then you will know for 100% that you have unlocked Nele's Secret Shop. cat_3nodding
=~= Books are as follows with their prices: (They will be Listed under the Music Book tab. You will have to carefully look through the books already there as the 4 you want will be mixed in with the others.)
=*= What is an Ensemble? is priced at about 5,000 Gold. Raises Compose Rank from Rank D to Rank C.
=*= The Path of Composing is priced at about 11,020 Gold. Raises Compose Rank from Rank C to Rank B.
=*= Instrument Ranges is priced at about 11,000 Gold. Raises Compose Rank from Rank B to Rank A.
=*= The Fundamentals of Becoming a Great Composer is priced at about 26,000 Gold. Raises Compose Rank from Rank A to Rank 9.
=~= Once you have purchased all 4 books are are DONE with Nele's Secret Shop. I hope that wasn't too confusing. If it was let me know and I'll try to make it not confusing. cat_sweatdrop Oh yes! Before I forget: It will cost you 3 AP to Rank from Rank D to Rank C. Then cost another 3 AP to Rank from Rank C to Rank B. Again will cost another 3 AP to Rank from Rank B to Rank A. Then will cost 5 AP to Rank from Rank A to Rank 9.
cat_blaugh Now comes a simple one! lol this is simple because there's just one task needed to get the book (unlike getting the books from Nele's Secret Shop). By this step your Compose Rank should be Rank 9. How is this done you ask? to reach the mighty Rank 8? That is simple. All one must do is complete Karu Forest Dungeon in Iria and cross ones fingers that the book titled The Innocence of the Lute is in the chest after you defeat the boss.
= Now where Karu Forest Dungeon is in Karu Forest I cannot say as I forget myself and just end up looking all over the forest for it. cat_sweatdrop Now depending on your level you could do this dungeon solo (dropping a regular item such as 1 Gold coin or 1 potion, etc.) or you can do it in a party. I did the dungeon in a party to be safe to ensure if I did get overwhelmed be a lower chance of me dying and losing Experience Points or risk dying and dropping items that were on my character. Once you have beaten the dungeon, solo or party, in the chest or one of the chests at the end of the dungeon should be the book The Innocence of the Lute.
= If you do a party and one of your party members get it I believe it is trade able. In any case, once you have the book and read it you will be able to advance your Rank 9 Compose to Rank 8! This move will cost you a total of 5 AP to go from Rank 9 to Rank 8. cat_blaugh Now as you are Rank 8 you will now need to speak to Effie who is in Iria at the Qilla Base Camp. Speak to her about Skills and you should get a quest called Gain Musical Sensibility from the Birds. Now there are 2 parts to this quest.
= First part has you traveling through the Mana Tunnel to the Tunnel that comes out to Filia, the town of the Elves. You will then travel to....(will be continued once check in game)
= After you get the 10 White Kiwi Feathers you return to Qilla Base Camp and speak to Effie. She will say she isn't sure you understand or along those lines and ask you to collect 10 Black Kiwi Feathers. You then need to go to the Mana Tunnel and go to Longa Desert.
= You will want to go Eastwards till you find the Sandworm Landmark. Now in this general location, around this mark you will find the Black Kiwi. It will take a lot of kills to gather the 10 feathers unless you somehow are one of the extremely lucky people and get a feather after each kill then you will only be killing off 10 Kiwi's. If you are like me, with bad or average luck, then it will take you more than 10 Kiwi's just to gather the 10 feathers.
= Once you have gathered all 10 Black Kiwi Feathers return and speak to Efie at the Qilla Base Camp.
= Speak to Efie once you have the 10 Black Kiwi Feathers and she will then give you what you needed which was her agreeing to teach you so you can rank up your Composure Skill. This happens automatically so after you are finished speaking to Efie, if you must click Complete on the Quest, then you should be able to advance your Compose Skill up from Rank 8 to Rank 7 costing I believe 5 AP Points. cat_3nodding
cat_blaugh Now that you are Rank 7 you will need to do some exploring so this will require an L-Rod that can be purchased from...I will have to double check what NPC's sell the L-Rod mostly for if you are a Human Character. The quest is a bit tiering and can be frustrating but it is well worth it once you complete it and become Rank 6. I shall try and make it easy but this was even frustrating for me at times.
=Travel to Cor Village in Iria using the Manna Tunnel. There you will want to make your way to the Appraisal Shop and speak to Voight and I recommending having Gold on you as this will cost gold to go through.
=Once you speak to him enter his Shop and purchase 2 books:
=*=Courcle Excavation Journal Vol. 11 - Cost about 12,400 Gold.
=*=Courcle Excavation Journal Vol. 12 - Cost about 18,400 Gold.
=I recommend buying both books now as you will need Vol. 12 to go from Rank 6 to Rank 5 and it will be easier in finding items if you do both books so you can rank your Compose Skill all at once if possible or have less to find if you find items from the other volume as well.
=Now after you have purchased both books and have an L-Rod you'll want to head North of Vioght's home. You'll need to be holding the L-Rod and you'll want to listen for 4 beeps as you walk around the area towards a river where hippos are getting in and out of.
=When you hear 4 beeps stop right where you are and listen again for 4 beeps. If you get 4 beeps open your Action Window with N or click on the running person and then click Use on the action L-Rod Exploration. Once loaded pick a spot then click and if in the right area aimed a chest (guarded or unguarded) or a statue will appear depending how far you are.
=You will get, through your exploring, 1 to 3 maybe 4 of 3 different sizes: 1 square big, 2 squares big horizontal, and then 4 squares big in the shape of a square. Now for the smaller items you would be looking for a 1 or 2 square. For larger items you would be looking for a 4 square. Hope that not too confusing.
=When your inventory is full, you can put your finds on pets, return to Vioght and speak to him. Now you will want to hit Appraise. This will cost you about 100 Gold per find. Do this for all your finds.
=Once you have your stone items appraised you will need to get them repaired. They are damaged and will need to be restored. So, before you End Conversation with Vioght, when you return to the options after clicking Complete or what it says at bottom of the box that once held your stone items, you will want to click on Restore and this will cost about 150 Gold per item.
=Now some times he'll succeed and you'll be able to see the item in your inventory and other times he will fail and you will not see it as it is gone. You are still charged even if he fails so this is also why you want as many as you can carry so you will have extra that could be duplicates that could survive being restored.
=Items You will need to find and what size's they come from including how many you need (if it requires placing pieces together to restore it) below and the area I had found them in thanks to Yenjin's help:
=~=Ancient Calender - Need 4 Ancient Calender Pieces stacked on top of the other to fully restore it. - Found around: La Terra Highlands, around where the rafting begins. - Extracted Artifact 4 square shape.
=~=Bronze Jackal - Need 4 Bronze Jackal Pieces stacked on top of the other to fully restore it. - Found around: Cenae Meadows and the Hob Goblin's Village in Lappa that is found by Docking at the 1st Dock on Right after getting a raft to raft down the Suytu River in Le Terra Highlands. - Extracted Artifact 2 square horizontal shape.
=~=Bone Ocarina - Need 4 Bone Ocarina Pieces stacked on top of the other to fully restore it. - Found around: Cor. Found mine North of Cor and between Cor and river that is the Suytu River. - Extracted Artifact 1 square.
=~=Damaged Silk Clam Shell - Need 1 Damaged Silk Clam Shell as it is not in pieces. - Found around: Near Suytu River North of Cor and on the other side of the Suytu River in which you can fly over on a pet or if you can catch one ride a hippo across the river by Right Clicking it steady till it gives options to Mount/Ride or to Attack. Select Mount/Ride and ride it across then Dismount with R. - Extracted Artifact 1 square.
=~=Herba Bone Needle - Need 1 Herba Bone Needle as it is not in pieces. - Found around: North of Cor around the river if I recall. - Extracted Artifact 2 square.
=Once you have gotten a piece or completed a piece that is listed in Book 11 pick up the piece and place it over the book, click, and click OK to put the item into the book. Once it is complete all you need to do is read it if I recall rightly. I'll double check that. After training has been completed it will cost you I believe 5 AP to rank your skill from Rank 7 to Rank 6.
cat_blaugh Alright now if you bought Vol. 12 from Voight like I said to then this should be more or less already done as well but will list still the steps to get it completed so you can go from Rank 6 to Rank 5. =Okay now if you did you should already have the Courcle Excavation Journal Vol. 12 that cost about 18,400 Gold. If you did then I hope you also held onto other artifacts you found. Below will be listed the items required in Vol. 12 in order to take your Composure Rank from 6 to Rank 5.
=*=Ancient Calender - Need 4 Ancient Calender Pieces stacked on top of the other to fully restore it. - Found around: La Terra Highlands, around where the rafting begins. - Extracted Artifact 4 square shape.
=*=Shaman Shield - Need 3 Shaman Shield Pieces stacked on top of the other to fully restore it. - Found around: La Terra Highlands, around where rafting begins or up on the higher land to the left of the Mana Tunnel. - Extracted Artifact 4 square shape.
=*=Silk Clam Shell - Need 1 Silk Clam Shell Piece as it comes out whole. - Found around: Lappa Village and to get there do rafting and when the river splits you will want to go right and dock on the first dock on the right. It also can be found anywhere along the Suytu River as the river is North of Cor Village and is also the river used for rafting. - Extracted Artifact 1 square shape.
=*=Pantay Intaglio Pot - Need 1 as comes out whole from a Restored Boxed Artifact. - Found around: Swamp is easiest place to find it though is full of bugs and alligators/crocs. It can also be found around the Meadow but is harder to find there. To get to the Swamp it's quickest and easiest to just find a player who can already use the Manna Tunnel in Iria to warp you to with them in their party to the Swamp. (Note: be on the person's pet that is going to do the warping or you will be left behind) - Extracted Artifact 2 square shape.
=*=Clam Shell Picture - Need 1 as comes out whole. - Found around: Suytu River North of Cor Village or near Cor Village so it's between the two. - Extracted Artifact 1 square shape.
=Again this will take time using the L-Rod so be calm and just go with it. Keep gold on you as it will still cost 100 gold to get the artifacts Appraised and will cost about 150 gold to get the item Restored so just cross your fingers and search, search, search. It took me several days so don't be stressed if it takes a few days or longer to find all the pieces if you are short a piece.
=Once you have a piece or completed piece then place the item over the Vol. 12 book and click OK to putting it into the book and once completed simply read the book and when it says on the front click Complete. Once you do so then it should fully train your Compose Skill. If so then you can Rank it from 6 to Rank 5 at the cost of 7 AP. cat_3nodding
cat_blaugh Alrighty! At Rank 5 you will need to be doing some Commuting to earn yourself some Ducats as the 3 books you'll need in order to get up to Rank 2 will be sold by the Bard along the Abb Neagh path that connects Dunbarton to Tailleann. Now there is no order exact for these books as it all depends on when she feels like changing them and depends on what mood she's in on which book she will put up in her shop so you have been warned. So shall we begin below?
=Alright then. The books listed below are the 3 you will need to buy from Yvona and how much Ducats they cost and as said above, there is no order or ability to predict when she will change books or what book she will have in her shop. You'll just have to keep checking every so often or check, buy a book then go commute then come back and check and so on.
=Here are the 3 books and to what Rank they will take you to:
=*=Pitfalls of Composition - Cost about 150,000 Ducats will take you from Rank 5 to Rank 4 when read and will cost you 7 AP to complete the Rank up to 4.
=*=A Composer's Life - Cost about 250,000 Ducats will take you from Rank 4 to Rank 3 when read and will cost you 7 AP to complete the Rank up to 3.
=*=Unknown Song Vol. I - Cost about 500,000 Ducats will take you from Rank 3 to Rank 2 when read and will cost you 7 AP to complete the Rank up to 2.
=These 3 books can be found under Yvona's Rare Books tab in her shop. So you would need in total (if you wish to stand and wait till you've bought all 3 before leaving her camp) about 900,000 Ducats so that would be a lot of commuting time from town to town.
=I am not afraid to say that how I got my 3 was I spoke to my friend yenjin who does Commuting more often than I so he had enough Ducats to buy all 3 for me when they came to her shop. You can go Commute and earn the money yourself to buy the books or you could find someone who wouldn't mind buying them for you and trading them to you. (yes the books are trade-able)
=So once you have read Unknown Song Vol. I you will be at Rank 2! This concludes the easy part and straight forward as Rank 1 book is more of chance to get it as will be explained next.
cat_blaugh Okay! Now that you are Rank 2 Composing Skill it's time for the pain in the butt part to reach Rank 1! Yay but it's a pain in the butt just because it's up to chance. It also involves cooking so you'll need at least Rank 9 in cooking to complete this, eventually, or buy or ask a cook of the right level to make the dishes listed below. Now shall we begin? It's short but hard due to the random chance deal:
=First step is to have Cooking Rank 9 (or find a friend or stranger with Cooking Rank 9) You'll need (or find someone with) this rank because you'll need to feed 1 of 2 dishes (or both if you wish) to the Glutton Monkey at the Hot Springs in Iria.
= Now this is a pain in the butt just because it's all random chance. so a chance you can get the item but also a chance you won't get it and can get very frustrating eventually. (or is for me)
= Alright after you reach Cooking Rank 9 or find someone with that ranking you'll need to make or have them make you either Vegetable Soup or Shrimp Fried Rice, 4 stars or 5 stars. (You can see the Cooking Topic I have open to see how to make these once I post that part up)
= Once you have gotten one way or another one or many of the dishes, trust me you'll need a lot. cat_stare I've done 90 dishes of Vegetable Soup and Shrimp Fried Rice together and still no book. -grumbles-
= If you are lucky you'll get Unknown Song Vol. II from one of the Glutton Monkey in the Hot Springs. (just down from the volcano in Iria)
= When you get the book you just simply read it and then you'll be Rank 1! the highest ranking there is. biggrin Oh and it is random. I keep getting Dungeon Pass boxes. Below is a list of the items you can get from the Glutton Monkeys when you give them either Vegetable Soup or Shrimp Fried Rice:
****Weapons: Big Table Fork, Big Table Knife, Big Table Spoon, Cat Paw Bell Club, Duster, Mysterious Arrow.
****Equipment: Hot Spring Cap, Fine Fabric Weaving Gloves (Type 2), Fine Silk Weaving Gloves (Type 2), Finest Silk Weaving Gloves (Type 2).
****Instruments: Cymbals of Enthusiasm, Flute of Despair, Roncadora of Joy, Love Whistle.
