I figured I would post something a bit different this time, something that I thought about. It's common myths about The Holy Bible that sometimes we think of as truths without thinking much about it, or have heard them before without thinking twice because the myth is so common. So here are a few:

Eve ate an apple from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and offered some to Adam.

The Holy Bible never specifies what type of fruit Adam and Eve actually ate. It's possible that it could've been an apple, and it's also possible that it could've been a fruit we've never even seen or heard of before. (Genesis 3)

Adam and Eve only had two sons, Cain and Abel.

This couldn't have been possible because the earth could never flourish unless Adam and Eve had daughters. The Holy Bible does mention that Adam and Eve had "other sons and daughters". (Genesis 5:4)

Men have fewer ribs than women

Even though God had put Adam into a deep sleep and made woman from one of his ribs, this does not mean that every man since had one less rib. God taking one of Adam's ribs was a circumstance that happened, not a genetic alteration that continues. The belief that losing a limb or a part of the body was genetic from parent to child, an idea by French biologist Lamarck. The theory is of course, discredited because losing a limb is a circumstance that does not affect the DNA in such a manner to be passed on to a child. If this was the case, amputees would pass this along to their children in every circumstance, which we don't see happening.

We have to close our eyes to pray

This one is false. Most of us may have heard from parents or other Christians that we must close our eyes to pray. However, there are good reasons to close eyes while praying such as to keep us from getting distracted looking around the room and have a better ability to concentrate on the prayer at hand it is not an actual requirement of prayer. At one of the many moments that Jesus had prayed, John 17, implies that Jesus most likely had prayed with his eyes open.

Jesus drank wine, and had short hair

Jesus was not able to drink wine because he was a Nazarite (taken a vow to set himself apart from worldly things and focused on God. Nazarite's also did not cut their hair or drink wine). For Jesus to drink wine would've have broken that vow.

The little drummer boy is mentioned in The Holy Bible

This is one that I'm not sure how it got started, but the little drummer boy is not in The Holy Bible.

~Feel free to discuss, add to this topic, and fellowship! I apologize I didn't have a ton of time this week. Also, if there are any ideas anyone has for next church meeting - please feel free to post them in the suggestions, post them here, or send me a PM!~

I like to point out the Myth of the "Three Wise Men". When you read in the Bible concerning Jesus' birth, no where does it say that there were three wise men (read Matthew chapter 2. It just says "wise men"). I love pointing this out in Youth Church class because we're so conditioned to hear things that aren't true that it stops people when they are confronted with the truth.

That would've been an excellent one! I remember talking with a group of people about that one once and I remember someone saying, "The desert they were crossing - it was most likely one or more caravans because no one in their right mind would probably cross that desert in three's. Not to mention all the offerings they brought for Jesus." That's an excellent one! Thanks for bringing it up - it had slipped my mind.

Other myths can include that the Virgin Mary stayed a virgin. After Jesus was born she did have other children. In fact, James is one of Jesus' disciples and he was the brother of Jesus! People like to leave that part out and exalt Mary more than she needs to.

Not only that, I think that people worship the Virgin Mary because Jesus was able to tell him something such as turn the water into wine so they may believe she has some power if Jesus will listen to her.

Also, where did Mary have other children? Do you have some verses? smile
