What in a game truly matters to you? Is it the story? The game play? The graphics? The controls? Or maybe the multiplayer? When it comes to me, game play is what matters to me. It could be a game with a crap story and horrible graphics, but as long as i can fight a zombie horde with various plant life or fight a guy with a pyramid on his head and then steal his sword, i will be happy. 3nodding

Good mechanics, definitely. I don't want to deal with awkward controls or a bad camera. But I do like lots of options and the ability to noticeably upgrade weapons, items, skills, or whatever else. I like games that let me explore, but don't make objectives too vague. I can deal with a poor story, graphics, and even some glitches as long as the general mechanics are fun enough. But if the mechanics are tedious or lead to accidental deaths, I won't be playing the game for long.

It depends on the type of game, but generally gameplay is most important to me, closely followed by art style / setting.
I'm very tolerant of poor/outdated graphics in games, but I find it difficult to get into a game if I don't find the overall art style and setting appealing.
Music can be pretty important also... tying in with the game's setting. While a mediocre soundtrack won't ruin a game for me, a great soundtrack will really enhance the experience a lot.
Storyline is probably least important. If I want a good story, i'll read a novel. Even the best video game storylines can't compete with that.
And I hate cinematics in video games. Cutscenes and all that crap do nothing for me whatsoever.

let me say it in this way: a game based only on graphics can impress you for 1 week or 1 month, a game based on good gameplay combined with good music and story impresses you for a live time.
just look at all those games we still talk about which came out on the nes/snes etc.
crysis 3 might be a good showreel for the cryengine, but it will never be remembered as a game like Ocarina of Time

As long as I enjoy it, i'm happy.
But I would have to say gameplay, and decent to good storylines.

Story and graphics are the main things that grab me. Horrendous controls and fighting systems can ruin it though.

The story and gameplay matter the most to me. Even if it has rubbish controls if I like the story/characters enough I'll make myself push through with it.
Graphics matter a little bit but not that much, since I'm used to playing the old megadrive and PS1 games without minding the graphics. Though nice graphics would definitely be a plus. And if I had to choose between 2 games that both had good gameplay and story, graphics would become a factor into which I get first.
Local co-op multiplayer is a nice bonus and would compel me to a game. Online multiplayer or PvP multiplayer doesn't matter to me at all.

The gameplay, the controls, and the story make a game for me. Like Metal Gear Solid. Loved the story but absolutely hated the controls (Talking about MGS 1-3) MGS4 had great controls compared to all the others.

What is most important to me is the story. I love to find a game with a story that just sucks me in and holds me there. Sadly, there are fewer and fewer games like this in a gaming society ruled by graphics and multiplayer.

-Storyline -Controls Graphics are not an issue usually. I don't have many friends who play games like I do, so I really don't care for multiplayer either. Although it's a good way to spend time with my brother and show my gf that videogames are not "over-rated" stare Anyway, I play mostly horror and RPGs, so I'm very particular about the story. Very particular.

Good mechanics and smooth gameplay. Don't care about a pretty lookin' game but a game that looks clean and where the art style was realized in great way is good(meaning a game can be NES graphics and be more attractive than Far Cry 3's graphics to me). Hell I love Anachronox's graphics and they are awfully outdated. So graphics doesn't mean much to me. Audio helps, but only in rare cases where it is exceptional like in Bastion or Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

Physics matter to me alot in gameplay. The way that your character really feels like they have weight and momentum. Like Shadow of the Collosus or Dragon's Dogma while climbing and fighting. Or Borderlands while running. Combat is nice and fulfilling also when its a bit of a challenge and not just running up and hitting stuff. Story and graphics are still a big factor, but overall character/game feel is probably the biggest thing that will suck me right into a game in my book.

Gameplay and story are equally important to me. It takes a good story and reasonable playability for me to enjoy a video game. Of course, I don't limit playability to my own ability to play a particular game since there are plenty of video games I'm terrible at (platformers mainly) that I still enjoy watching other people play. Just because I suck at a video game doesn't necessarily make it bad so long as more skilled gamers I know aren't also having the same amount of difficulty with it. If the gameplay is bad enough that it's painful to watch a more skilled gamer try to negotiate with it, then it might not be worth the effort.
Graphics are less important. A gorgeous looking video game doesn't guarantee good story and/or gameplay.
Having a great soundtrack is really the best bonus video games have to offer though. I can enjoy countless hours of just listening to the music from my favorite games and that lasts well after I'm done playing them. That's one of the qualities that can really make a video game memorable.

story & characters > gameplay/mechanics/controls > graphics
I try to keep in mind when a game was made before complaining about the graphics. A 10 year old game might have bad graphics by today's standards, but if they were great at the time, then I still can appreciate them.
