Okay I'm going to try to list everything we have so far. Items in blue are terms that may change if we think of a cooler name.
CARDS There are 3 types of cards: Monsters, Spells and Items.
Monsters The battle force of your army. Name Clan: The archetype. (In YuGiOh terms Gravekeeper's Assailant would have a name Assailant and a clan Gravekeeper) Type: Soldier, Dragon, Machine, etc. Element: Fire, Dark, Wind, etc Rank: It's level. A 0 requires no sacrifice, a 1 requires 1, a 2 requires 2, etc. ATK/DEF: It's offensive and defensive powers. Effects: Written Condition, Cost, Effect. Description
Spells The magic you can preform. Name Type: Action, Exhaust, Location, etc. Element: Fire, Dark, Wind, etc ATK/DEF: Only used for spells that can become monsters. Effects: Written Condition, Cost, Effect. Description
Items Your armoury. Name Clan: The clan, type or element that can use the item. If blank it can be used by any monster. Type: Trap, Weapon, Building, etc. Effects: Written Condition, Cost, Effect. Description

GAMEPLAY The game itself...
To start you have a deck of 40-50 cards. You can have no more than 3 of an individual card. (Same name and clan)
START Both players shuffle their own decks followed by each others. Both draw 5 cards. Both players decide to Mulligan or not. (Put their hand back, shuffle and draw 5 new cards.) If you Mulligan your opponent draws 1 card, if both Mulligan neither draws an extra card. You only Mulligan once, you can't Mulligan after drawing an extra card and both players must Mulligan at the same time. The non-Mulligan player must draw or Mulligan before his opponent can draw 5 new cards.
Each player takes turns going through all their phases before the opponent can start their turn. The game goes [Draw Phase] - [Main Phase] - [Battle Phase] - [End Phase] - Opponent's turn
Draw Phase Turn player draws 1 card before anything else. Fast cards/effects can be activated.
Main Phase The turn player can play Monsters, Spells or Items. The turn player can activate effects. Turn player can Ready any Exhausted or Stunned Monsters.
Battle Phase Turn player can attack opponent's Monsters or opponent directly.
End Phase Turn player can set Monsters, Spells or Items.

Terms + Ready: A card is ready if it is facing straight. + Exhaust: You do this by turning a card sideways. + Stunned/Set: This is when a card is put face-down. + Fast: Similar to Spell Speed 2 & 3 cards in YuGiOh.
Other Rules + Rank 2 Monsters can be played by sacrificing one Rank 2 monster. + Rank 3 Monsters can be played by sacrificing one Rank 3 or one Rank 2 and any other Monster. + When you attack you must exhaust the attacking monster. (Must be Ready) + Set/Stunned monsters cannot be attacked. + When your opponent attacks you can Exhaust a ready Monster to add it's ATK and DEF to the battle. The Monster you Exhaust takes all the damage from the ATK up to it's DEF then the left over is used against the attacked monster. Example. A 5/4 attacks a 3/2. Defender Exhausts his ready 1/4. The 5 ATK from the attacker destroys the 1/4 but doesn't do enough to destroy it's target. The total 3+1 of the Defenders destroys the Attacker. + You can only do the above once per battle. The attacker cannot exhaust to add to their original attack. + The attacker can exhaust more than one Monster to use their total ATK against a single Attack target. Has to be done on the initial announcement of attack. + Attack points can be used against more than one monster. You must select monsters once at a time to deal damage. (So you have a total 10 ATK to spread across monsters with DEF of 5, 4, 2, 3. You'd have to pick a monster and do all that damage to it before the next. You cannot do 4 to the 5 and 3 to the 4 as you can in Huntik) + You can only set cards from your hand in your End Phase. + You cannot play cards from your hand or activate set cards during your End Phase unless it is Fast.

Possibly have Locations with Ranks. You'd start the game with your Rank 0 field face-up until the 1st turn started when it would be revealed.
You could then play Rank 1 or even 2 Locations over it.
